Fucking yeah! Real nice glitch, and finally a fast irqloader on plus/4! \o/

...and finally a modern demo that actually uses the fact that the plus/4 got more than 16 colours...

Good stuff, and extra thumbs up for doing a proper Plsu4 demo with TED sound - no god-damn SID-card needed!

Some very impressive effects as well (I got a nice little Arte/Sanity-vibe going from the effect shown in the top-right corner! :))

Thumb for the demo, but that's a good thing I can turn off the volume on my pc, because frankly speaking it's the most painfully horrible sounds I've been hearing in ages. Does really TED sucks that much?

Wow, what a trip! The music is somewhat special, but for TED, it's highly original and doesn't sound like lacking one voice and multiple volume registers badly, so thumb up for that, too!

I´m no expert but this looked better than many C64 prods and the plus4 is an older and weaker (technically) platform, isn`t it?

Great demo, well the music is not my cup of tea, but dlooking to the hardware limitations (2 channels only?) its okay and fitted the demo well.

If you can do such a demo on the plus4, what could you possibly achieve on a C64? :)
rulez added on the 2011-04-25 01:07:08 by Skyrunner Skyrunner
On plus4 machine this demo is absolutely great and here is my thumb.
rulez added on the 2011-04-25 01:25:14 by jack-3d jack-3d
it's actually a newer and weaker platform if i'm not mistaken. also this prod really rules!

rulez added on the 2011-04-25 02:38:49 by slack slack
I like how they renamed the c64 demo compo mere hours before its start to accommodate this one. Probably better than to cancel said compo and throw this demo into the wild compo.

Anyway, besides the repetitive and annoying music and the general incoherence issues (near dutch color scheme for the ending parts, wtf?), I liked it.
added on the 2011-04-25 08:09:10 by tomaes tomaes
skyrunner/madmixx: it's newer and has a significantly faster cpu (~1.7mhz instead of ~1mhz) but crappier video/sound chips. (though the TED does support 121 colors)
added on the 2011-04-25 10:33:37 by ryg ryg
Sweet! Needs more Batman though.
rulez added on the 2011-04-25 10:47:36 by break break
ryg the cpu isn't "significantly" faster.. i can port for instance the "ball" to c64 without major optimizations, and it will be equally as fast. the problem is that the ted slows the machine significantly down if not in the border.. we must switch to doubleslowness aswell because of the loader many times, (so it's slower than a c64 at many times). but ryg, great to hear youre alive! :)

Ok talked to krill again about his loaderport. It was my fault to say the loader slows something down.. it's the fastest irqloader on plus4 and consumes only the cylces we give to it.. so we finally have that cool loader for our machine.. Big thanks Krill!
added on the 2011-04-26 11:01:44 by mad mad
First of all big thanks to Krill from me too. Krill is quite a beast: After he was done porting, I received one single version of the loader and it ran like a charm on emu and real-iron without the necissity of any further debugging. Prussian accuracy ;)

To clarify on the machine-speed-topic: In the display-area the cpu runs slightly below c64-speed and doubles the MhZ in the border-area. I don't remember the figures, but on a "normal" screenmode you get about 2000-4000 cycles/frame extra compared to a c64. Sounds like a big advantage but you also have twice the amount of DMA-Cycles (=badlines) than on c64, because the videomatrix is twice as big.

For example Mad's ball-part (which my wife correctly identified as the easter-egg) works on a special screenmode that requires even twice the amount of dma-cycles - compared to a normal screenmode. For other kinds of demo-effects you need to have two STA's to write to the videomatrix. So lots of times this "double-clock-rate-advantage" melts down to "nothing" at best. There are lots of occasions where you end up having less cycles than on c64.

In my understanding Krills Loader switches down to the single-clock-rate for mainly three reasons:

1. The Floppy runs at roughly 1MhZ and thus you won't have any advantages from "polling" the data at double-clock-rate.

2. Timing at double-clock-rate is annoyingly difficult and inherently instable because you still have 5 or so cycles per rasterline that run at single-speed. The horror...

3. It's an irq-loader that can be interrupted at any time. You simply can't put a detection of clock-speed-changes into a *fast*-loader in an efficient way.

Hope i wasn't talking too much bullshit here. Anyway: If it looks the loader slowed down something in the demo, its because i failed to integrate it properly ;)

To the music-haters: Dudes, the TED (video/sound chip in the cbm 264 line) isn't really capable of much more than your 80s digital watch. This is no SID. Considering the platform, I rate the music quite high (and of course I am totally neutral judging this, being a Bauknecht member!)

awesome
Ace effects! The tune is not exactly to my liking though but knowing what TED is capable of (or rather isn't) it still is OK.

Strange, strange, strangely good. I like that prod a lot. The opening
with the vector ball squares instantly sets me into demo mode. The
(line-)tunnel with that strange guy to the right is nice, too. Not to
mention the voxel endpart. Gorgeous. The only part I do not like so
much (the colors!) is the one starting at 2:26 - it is to 70s-Prilblumen-
like for me ;-)

Very neat stuff, makes me wonder how you pull this off! Great!
