Aren't these 2 effects stolen animated gifs?

I don't know how complicated is reproducing n frames in loop on a C64.

oh, i would have thumbed it up if they werent stolen.

Amazing effects!@#$%

I recognised the first gifs. I was about to thumb it up massively but if those two effects were stolen and not credited, this wil be a thumb down.

Grr.. ans al lthe way I was thinking 'wow! how did they managed a one-on-one translation of that gif in c64 code, and that sphere effects is a major breakthrough! C64 rules'

Any explanation on this would be very much appreciated, if stolen you can take this piggy as a thumb down. The fact that it is a tribute only makes it worse in that case. Besides that my sincere condoleances.

i dont think the effects count as "stolen", as I see no problem in reusing old effects, as long as they fit and the coder takes no credits for inventing them. Giving credits to whoever came up with it first ist also not so easy on many occasions (also ive yet to see an intro with a tunnel/polyball with credits tbh...).
I think this is no show-off-tro and should not be treated as such, im glad streetuff decided to do something for the compo.

Why are people keep using the term "effects" for pre-baked animation? Stop it.
added on the 2011-08-15 10:16:33 by gloom gloom
I haven't read the competition rules, but this smells like a borderline disqualification case, as the voting is based on mostly uncredited animations taken from the intertubes.
added on the 2011-08-15 10:20:54 by tomaes tomaes
specially first effect is used for more than 10 times on c64 platform before and i think many of them (if not all) were animations. it's a well known effect and it doesn't matter if street tuff recalculated the maps or not. he is already famous with his video compression routines. i don't think any c64 sceners thought they were realtime 3d effects.

about the second effect, i've never seen that one before. i'd really prefer if it was street tuff who created the animation frames. but in any case, we all knew these effects were animations.

was a pleasure to watch this at evoke! tuffy you rule!

i like it. great tune, nicely put together.

my 2 cents on the "stolen gifs! catch the thief!" topic:
first of all it was quite obvious that these effects were animations. secondly, making animations work in a c64-demo still involves quite some effort - it can get arbitrarly complicated if you like. so if these anims were stolen or not only plays a very small role when judging a demo like this. ( i wonder how people would look at this demo if he'd "ripped" the nyan-cat anim instead of the spikey ball...)
rulez added on the 2011-08-15 12:35:45 by degauss degauss
stolen or not, I like it. Nice to watch and hear.
rulez added on the 2011-08-15 13:00:13 by Olivier Olivier
Well, judging by the live footage from Evoke, the crowd seems to go mad when they see the spike ball effect. But, considering the tech side (animation player) is basically the same as the first effect, they shouldn't go mad, right?

I guess it would have been ok if on the nfo file (which I don't see) it said "ft. animated gifs found on the interweb". And even better if that was specified in the demoshow profile right before the demo was shown.

That way, cs64 ignorants like me wouldn't go mad for an "effect" that just happens to be an animation that I just haven't seen before. This time around I happened to know them and made me wonder.

What degauss said! But i didn't like it enough for a thumb up, it's only anims...

i've made an interview with Quiss/Reflex a few years ago. i'm a fan of him and when i asked about the big fast vectors, he told me they were all calculated on PC and eor filled on c64. that's ok up to a point. but when i asked about bug hangling of eor filling, he told me he used to fix buggy frames on a paint editor by hand! :) so, that's nothing new, you just need to wake up. :)

many of us are able to understand what is realtime, what is not and how much of precalculation is involved without even examining the codes. please join us. :)

@Doob: DUH!!! Animated GIFs on a C64? Ha ha ha...
This is extreme coding. Take a look at e.g.: Orangi by Extend.

awsome tune by Arman!
rulez added on the 2011-08-19 11:34:52 by Proteque Proteque
Right, it's rather about the tune and an hommage to the late great King of SID-bass (at least in my book) rather than super original FX.

Farewell Intensity.

Coding wise a piggy at first, but packing it into a 44k one-filer and providing the really good sync for the great tune turns the thumb up
rulez added on the 2011-08-19 14:21:59 by JAC! JAC!
Using anims is extremely lame and wrong (shouldn't these be coded), but there's bunch of other stuff and it's dedicated to the right persons so thumb up
