Win 7 - 64 / Driver version 8.980.0.0
added on the 2013-07-28 03:25:44 by mog mog
Eh.
Updated the driver to 12.104.0.0 and it looks like in the vid, so sorry for the oink.

For the prod itself, it's weird that I have the feeling that it needs my Sundaymood to get into the demo, which is (at least for me) a first one for ASD. So, hmm - I'm not sure if I read too much into it, but it feels like that the story is about things that were once in order, went off the charts, which certainly has some possibilities - but also the motif of fear is prominent - in the end there's the wish for all to be back in order again.
At least that's what I read into it, after a couple of .be beers at 30°C in the flat, and thinking that you guys are from .gr

It got me thinking, and even if I'm totally of track - I love the palette and the music, but the dropshadow tops it off (it looks so damn nice!) <3

Cool!

The music and visuals was misfitting imo - chaotic and stuttering/clipping movements to very calm ambient and smooth soundtrack? ...hmmm I guess I would have chosen to cut the soundtrack so it was following the "cuts" in the visuals.

But cool anyways :)

I don't think the potential of this is fully exploited here.
Hmmm...
Especially some missing timing (as Maytz pointed out) holds the full eperience back for me.
Somehow I just feel that the effect could have been beed used even better than in the current state. Still nice looking and sounding though :)

I need to be honest about this one. I really think it's boring. There's no real progression, no changes in the music that is picked up and used in the visuals. There seem to happen close to nothing from the start and throughout the 3 minute "journey". It's a nice ambient track and there's definitely some cleverness going on visually, but I just don't get it. Sorry.

I'll leave it with a piggy.

The experiment is nice, using an algorithm and some emergent behavior as a demo is a good idea, but it feels at bit served as is. The image is a bit raw, there is little or no connection between the image and the sound, and story wise, there is next to nothing, except maybe for the very first and very last seconds. It feels like there is nothing to understand, just stuff happening.

Hi all,

it is very unfortunate that there seem to be problems with the nvidia chipsets (I have since fixed all shader errors but the problem is still there, maybe it is a matrix corruption that I need to find in the c code somewhere).

The demo follows a similar concept to our last year demo mitochondrio but on a macro (space) rather than micro (chemistry) scale. The pattern is "steady state - mutation - attack - assimilation".

Music is a remix from Ps - the lost religion of light? Sizewise yes I could have done it in a lot less but you'd need to wait a bit more at startup; 60mbytes isn't that much these days. The demo works really well at 1080p if you can run it at acceptable framerates. The image sequence inside is a source (through edge tracing and other heyristics) of organic random functions that drive lots of things in the visuals. I thought it would have been a good idea and it probably is - try it yourself!

Anyway, we had fun making it and fun presenting and being at the party with the spanish demosceners. Until the next time...

It's "art", but it's cool. Nice to see ps's music with some good visuals, and someone other than smash doing particle simulation. :) Eagerly awaiting nvidia compatible version (but then, I'm still waiting for Spin and Happiness, too)
rulez added on the 2013-07-28 21:05:06 by phoenix phoenix
Very interesting simulation/visual representation, is what I thought at first. Then it dragged on and as Puryx pointed out to never go anywhere or, if you will, exploit it's potential. Also congratulations on demo number X with compatibility issues up the wazoo Navis. A good deal of earlier releases were of such (visual) quality that I'd think well, okay, be that as it may, it's still one hell of an effort. This looks too cheap to not run on any SM3 wielding setup flawlessly.

I like it very much. You see, usually the red circle is the "main actor", and the other circles either tend to follow the red circle and aggregate around it or tend to move away from the red circle (like in magnetism). Thus the demo serves as an entertaining demonstration of some fundamental concepts of physics. The musical score is also very good and suits the atmosphere. All in all, a clear thumb up!
rulez added on the 2013-07-28 21:29:50 by Adok Adok
I am terribly sorry about the incompatibilities. I havent had an nvidia card for about 8 years now, and these shaders seem to behave so differently between the different vendors. Sounds like it is not just my sloppy coding but there is something else that is in general wrong. Then again, these are demos where very strange things are supposed to happen inside the shaders, some of which are hacks that would randomly work. I need to fix this before next time.
added on the 2013-07-28 21:50:41 by Navis Navis
I already felt my comment was harsher than it should have been but the way you take it makes me feel even worse ;) I know a thing or two about compatibility and whereas you're right about a good amount of disparity, not often varying through driver releases as well, it's generally fixable :)

The question remains if it's worth all that for what's supposed to be primarily a fun pastime. Well the only thing I got there is that you've got a big audience. For a good reason.

Go on :)
(also a small tech. article on this would be fun, what's seen suggests it's either a clever particle system or other some sort of GOL/neural sorcery)
added on the 2013-07-28 21:58:21 by superplek superplek
Managed to watch about half. Then my laptop battery dies :(

What I saw was fascinating though. With the red dot, it's like watching some kind of alien football played with completely alien rules.

And what plek said about an article. I can see small bits of how it works, but it seems to have a quite complex and very interesting set if rules.

I really like the idea behind it. Despite the abstraction, the "steady state - mutation - attack - assimilation" sequences is really readable. The cuts, however, are too disruptive for me, esp. because I can't connect them to the music.

Also, it would have been nice to play more with the ongoing simulation: The state and hierarchy of objects being represented by their color and connections. Something like "I'm bigger, and angry red, and I'll trap the smaller points with this network of lines before eating and digesting them. But eventually I will explode into new little particles with different properties." Something between the "Cycle of Live" and "Osmosis".

Just a couple of things about the production:

Relative speaking, violent nature started life a very long time ago as a very different demo. Half way through I realized that there is potential in that demo that needs to be further explored (and presented in a bigger party) so I continued on a tangent from last year's Euskal demo called "Mito chondrio". With the particle engine in place and the track (remix) from Ps, the demo was completed in 2 days.
I changed my mind a few times from black to white background (you may see that in the postprocessing shader). The white background (and dark dots) gives it a microscopic feeling while the black a macroscopic. I had to let the demo lay for a couple of months before making a final decision - red against black.

The particles are working on a combination of curl noise attractors, a pseudo spring-mass-damper system and a point attractor. These things are linked to the FFT and some variables that I change by hand. The geometry and topology of the mesh is derived from the edge tracing of some images I recorded at home: these look organic enough to be interesting, yet quite chaotic to keep with the general feeling of the demo. Some edges are rotated as if they were a swing. This small detail is my favourite.

The rendering is done using gl_points and gl_line strips. It works quite well because there are many points (I think 1.2m) placed so tightly so that they move with continuity. On top of that there is the usual dose of SSAO to emulate the shadow dropping.

No. Unfortunately it is more complex than that. You can have a shader running on glpoints and still not rendering on one card etc. glpoints or glquads have nothing to do with it.
