5th? Wtf? Should have ranked higher.

if this had made it to 4k compo, the competition would have been even harder!

Very sad to hear the technical difficulties with getting this demo done, very happy it is still out there, even if not in the desired compo! Hopefully we'll see a 4k final. Should've been in the top 3 nonetheless :)

Definitely the most interesting thing in the 8k compo, even in its unfinished state. Would be so cool to see this finished as intended!
rulez added on the 2017-04-21 12:58:53 by Blueberry Blueberry
Despite all the struggles you went through and all the compromises you had to make I still think this is a very solid production and the placement in the compo sais the same.
Looking forward to the final!

Nice. Sad you didn't manage to fit it into 4k

Nice you both managed to get this done for the 8k compo after that fatal crash. Dammmmmn, this would have mixed up the results in the 4k competition for sure ! <3 Oh, and great to hear another puryx track. It´s awesome and fits perfect!!

Keep rocking LJ :)

Preeeeetty insane stuff. Would've killed had it made it to the 4k compo. Maybe some saturation/contrast/tonality issues but very minor issues. The rest is rock solid.
rulez added on the 2017-04-26 01:18:24 by noby noby
Yep I also think this might have been best in compo.

this in 4k would've been killer. this in 8k should've still won.

Awesome you still released it after all that shit. LJ (real name, no gimmicks) is not to be messed with!

i love the folkish touch in this music.
feels ofcoz super unfinished but in the endscene i liked the combination of complex stuff with simple geometric things. great mood

Okay here it is, the final of my revision release that so catastrophically failed. For those of you who don't know, work on this release started in december 2016, two month before revision I went all in and worked every available minute on it, then after 30 hours of straight party coding action(no sleep, no food) and 5 minutes before the (extended) 4k compo deadline my machine died with a bluescreen, unrecoverably corrupting my shaderfile. After a few hours of contemplation I decided to pull through another night, rewriting the intro on top of an old backup, and push it into the 8k compo. I again stretched the deadline but fell victim to my sleep deprivation one hour before the compo in which I made things worse than they were before, so what was shown in the compo was a test build that wasn't crinkled to the max(hence larger than 4k), nor finalized. I promised a final version the same day, and here it is. Countless hours of additional work and I'm still not satisfied with the result but at this point its time to let go of it.
I've not been defeated, I learned a lot from this intro, across all disciplines.

Special thanks to those who helped me during the party, namely:
- Blueberry for helping me crunching bytes
- Las for stretching the deadline, twice
- BenJam for sitting down with what was left of me and trying to recover my corrupted shader file
- Puryx for relentlessly updating the music and providing feedback
- Hardy for the nice coding break chats

Also to all the people giving me hugs, support or simply leaving me alone when I needed to: You know who you are <3

See you at the next party and stay awesome, thank you!

I don't think it's THAT insane, but it's tastefully done which is very important.
rulez added on the 2017-05-21 21:55:04 by Gargaj Gargaj
The director's cut just brings the insanity to yet another level...

No idea how you pull this stuff off. Along with Horizon Machine the most impressive 4k intro in recent memory (though the former means more to me personally).

Ok this final version is awesome. Never give up!

Pure awesomeness! The visuals fit the tune very well and I like the direction. It looks and sounds good.

Massive final. This would have rocked the 4k compo!

I dig the observing eye idea. Very strong 4k (final).

Now, speaking of 4k category, IMHO this should be the ranking:
1. "Horizon Machine" and "Absolute Territory" (ex aequo, both are very good, just different style)
2. "Maintenance"
3. "Final stage"

What tomkh said (especially about ranking!). And very well done, LJ, very nice final version <3

Convincing atmosphere, fitting music, and surprising amount of content. Shame it wasn't able to compete in the category it was intended for.

Truly 2017 will be remembered as the year of 4k, though it's a shame so many amazing prods didn't get the recognition they deserved because of the compo oversaturation.
rulez added on the 2017-05-22 16:52:53 by moozooh moozooh
Absolutely fabulous, esp. the final. If I had to find things to complain about, it'd be that the colors saturate pretty hard; it feels like a better/proper tonemapping operator would've fixed this. Makes the look feel a bit dated. But the mood is totally still there in both the visuals and the audio, and I have to commend the effort and dedication you poured into this prod! Massive stuff :)

Absolutely fantastic final! :)

In the compo this would have still lost to the stupid ball in a box! ;)
Also Horizon Machine is still no.1 on my list, although this is better. It´s the pacing i guess, although both have a very strange&slow place overall. What i really miss is the superClimaxOfDoom, an absolute Killer-Effect to end the show.

But finalizing this was a splendid move! You´ll be happy about this prod for the rest of your life, eventhough you may not be 100% satisfied right now! ;)

Remember what i said about me being different than all the other intro-coders by wanting to show abstract/oldskoolish stuff instead of realistic stuff? I guess you and the other releases at Revision made me rethink...i may do sth in your style next year...but maybe not...i guess it´ll get super-generic, disconnected bullshit in large amounts again! ;) :D

While doing preparations for TRSAC I stumbled upon the "old" version of the music for this 4k intro - so here's an "extended" mix for you, before we started cutting bytes:
http://www.puryx.dk/music/Puryx_-_Maintenance_(Extended_Mix).mp3

And of course a link to the version that was used in the intro as well: http://www.puryx.dk/music/Puryx_-_Maintenance.mp3
