scene.org awards 2006

category: general [glöplog]
Here I'm quoting myself from a post I've done in my blog:

Quote:
Well, that has been the worst thing of the party imho. As soon as I heard that Ithaqua had to read some kind of text as a VIP guy giving the price in a suit. I was like .. what the fuck?! Do we really need to do it that "serious". Was easy to see that was going to look wanabe. The videos were great, but, I really prefered the last years prizegiving ceremony. It was more familiar and funny, steeler and melwyn knew how to create suspense and also keep it fun and a great show. This year, the VIP guys that were giving the results were just thinking about leaving the stage (too many people looking at them I guess) so they were not giving any time for creating any suspense. Also some of the guys forgot the lines that they had to memorize and read.

Also, they keep doing that crappy connection with the gatering in the middle of the awards which it's very dumb, mainly because there is a 2min delay and they expect to have a conversation or something. Oh.. well..

So, then it's when I think.. Do we really need all this? If I ever get nominated for some of those awards and they keep doing the ceremony like that. Don't expect me to join it. I'm sorry.

So, what do you guys think about this year's scene.org awards ceremony?

it was OK. tho I only watched it through DTV.

and imho the suits were a great idea, because it's like the oscar of the scene, and it has to be ceremonial to some extent.

well the videos were great, but somehow I also felt it was a little disorganized... can't really tell why.

anyway, I enjoyed watching it, but last year's did seem a little better.

i found the whole award thing cool. a bit too long and boring, but cool nevertheless.

ps. thanks for dissing me in your blog. I did not make the bus schedules. Also the driver seemed less than pleased of even a few minutes delay.

a) its scene.org awards 2005 (its in respect to demos from 2005)

b) i wanna see polls from ppl sharing your opinion on that the adding of VIPs was a bad idea

c) the gathering sponsors the awards, one of the terms is that we include them somehow in the ceremony. unfortunatly the live feed never quite seems to work that live..

I appreciate the huge effort that the scene.org guys put in trying to give the event a huge resonance, involving several cameras around, a shiny host, VIP hosts and very professional sounding and looking presentations/interludes.
It still felt like they pushed it too far off their grasp, and (for instance) many of the people involved looked a bit too overstressed.
We are simple demosceners, we can settle for something a lot more playful and easy, but if scene.org likes to keep it this "hi level" it's fine with me.
Only one advice: make the thing shorter, because it's really hard to keep the attention alive along the whole event: there is no need to show the winner fully, (everybody already know them by heart) and perhaps merging a few categories (best effects+best graphics merged into best visuals maybe?) might help.

uncle-x: ok, no worries...
ps: feel free to change the name of the topic
dixan: I agree!

I second dixan on most. Except for the 'simple scener' part. Isn't it cool to present the best productions in a very flashy manner? And not full showing of productions would be a pre yeah, that takes ages! especially showing the same demo twice.

I liked the stylish aspect of it, compared to 2004, but to be honest, it was VERY long, it was very hot in the nominee area and towards the end I seriously thought I would pass out because of the combination of a hangover, dehydration and the lack of oxygen.

My suggestion would be to show just short clips of the winners, and then after the gala is over, have a demoshow with either all the nominees or then just the winners. I would definitely want to watch that.

dixan: i kinda also like the idea of combining "best effects" and "best graphics" to "best visuals"...

trace: getting the busdriver to wait more didn't seem to be easy... he didn't speak much english, and it seems no-one on the bus spoke much german :-/.

Also i did not know how long you would be delayed. And no-one of the spanish crowd tried to communicate the length of your delay to me or the driver.

preacher: that would work too.

I agree with others about the length, but the rest of the awards was cool shit (like previous years too). Suits and shit are fine by me, as long as you don't force the nominees to wear them :)

Oh and i think combining effects and graphics awards is a no go. Or then we would need a new category for best coding. Unlike mfx, some groups have real graphicians instead of coders who also make textures ;)

Still, picking entries which show "effects" is getting more and more hard. It seems to me that coding efforts are generally pointing towards good looking 3d rendering and features rather than "effects" as the demoscene intends them.

Good idea. The scene.org awards show le(i)ader should ask Crest/Affinity for some advice, he has a great reputation as a demoshow presenter and he knows the subject like no other. He sadly informed the German party organizers that there won't be a Crest demoshow on German ground ever again but maybe there's a small chance for "Crest presents the annual scene.org awards demoshow" [add shiny glares here].
It doesn't really belong to this topic but since it was already mentioned here:

Frankfurt-main Airport sucks
During the trip we were able to confirm the legend about the trains arriving in a precise time. But at the same time we were able to see how Frankfurt-Main Artport really sucks. When we arrived on Friday, after walking throught all the airport just to get our baggage, we were stopped by the police. Everyone had to wait 10min. They didn't say why. So those 10mins were enough for us to lose our shuttle bus that was going to bring us to the partyplace. It wasn't only the police guys fault, mr. Uncle-X was also there just caring about the suomi people and giving a shit about us, so the bus left without us, thanks dude!
[trace off]

Last year one bus driver didn't start at the airport since the bus wasn't full. He didn't get the idea that there was only a limited ammount of people. So this year quite the opposite happend. Please inform mr. main organizer scamp (mailto:scamp@untergrund.net) about that so he can improve next years situation.
yeah. and get drivers that speak better english :-)

what happened to the bus that operated in 2003 at least (wasn't at 04&05 so dunno about them)? i liked that one, it seemed bigger and more spaceous at least.

the bus this year (what bus? more like a van with seats) was just plain horror. too small for carry that amount of people (~20 everytime i went on it), and no extra space for luggage (or long legs). claustrotrophic feeling = not good.

maybe a improvement next year?

we were actually talking about the bus from the airport to the partyplace :-)

but yeah, i also liked the partyplace->hotels shuttle bus from last years more (this one was new).

We thought that somebody did puke the last year and they didn't want to do the service this year again. I also prefered the bus the last year.

But, anyway, is it possible to go back to the original topic? :P

Going back on topic...

I think the scene.org awards are going to the right direction. The length was indeed a bit too much. Maybe there could be like only clips from the demos and only nest demo would be shown completely. The contact to The Gathering is a good idea if they get the link to work properly, but two minutes delay is a bit too much, so if that doesn't work better, maybe it would be better to just skip it.

The attempt to look like a "professional" gala is a good idea IMO, but it doesn't work, when the people presenting the categories just want to get off the stage as quickly as possible, like this year :)

Nevertheless it was fun to watch, even if I kept almost falling asleep, but that was only because I was dead tired and in a too comfy place :)

nest demo = best demo

i never got why we had to show the winners in their entirety - pretty much everyone had seen them already and was just eagerly awaiting the next winner.

ps: regarding the stream - tg has suggested setting up a simple videoconferencing-solution for years now. ichat, msn, netmeeting, whatever, but it doesn't seem to get accepted. i talked to the democrew-guys and they are seriously considering just equpping some bp-visitor with a laptop and a webcam next year, to make it work better. :) the whole idea is very nice, it's just lacking in execution.

gloom: contact me via e-mail to get my address so you know where to send the laptop to.
Don't listen to him, gloom, he's still under influence from eating all those bananas, send the laptop to me ;-)

+1 vote for the presentation (and the suits). Perhaps the VIPs should be told not to feel obliged to come up with a long rambling introduction and cut straight to the announcement instead, unless they can prepare something more insightful than "I'm proud to be presenting the award for best graphics, because graphics are... um... really important in a demo... to make it... er... graphically... impressive."

I agree that the "Best effects" award is a bit of an oddball, as it overlooks the fact that actual "effect" demos are a niche market these days. "Best effects" and "best graphics" could become "technical achievement" and "best visuals", perhaps? If people really want to merge categories, then arguably the "oldschool / alternative" platform is *fairly* close to "technical achievement". Controversial... maybe.
