intro vs 64k

category: general [glöplog]
Before all the DB gets fucked, can we please differentiate between 40k or 64k (the productions named "intros" in all competitions) and what_the_people_actually_upload_as_intros?

I might accept that you want to name Intro a production like "a presentation of a new group" or "a small demo" but, please, do allow people to differentiate between what is a _really_small_ production and what is not.

So, please, can administrators add a new category named "64k" and move all the real intros under that?

I offer as a volounteer to differentiate, say, five hundreds of pc intros between 64k and not-64k.
If someone else will do that, we'll fix this mess in a week or so.

Thank you.

If you'd want this to be accurate across all platforms, I guess you'd have to create 96k and 192k categories to accomodate a whole range of Atari (Falcon) prods released since the mid-90's. I guess other platforms would require even more additional categories.

I agree that implementing all this would lead to a database that allows more powerful searches etc. On the other hand it could backfire on the database maintainers if the list of options gets too long and people enter stuff the wrong way because of ignorance or indifference (which is already happening as is in some cases).

finding and reporting errors doesnt seem to be the problem.

the pouet staff bothering to log in to mysql and actually fix the resquests seems to be more critical...

just implement damn functionality that allows all users to submit changes for approval ffs already.

or give permission to some users (like the top gloppers maybe) to delete some info from database, (so that anyone can reenter the correct info this time) just log it before deleting so you know if there is any abuse..

and add a damn insert new platform button somewhere..

ffs analogue, what are we paying you for?!

The difference between the problem I stated and 64k vs intro problem is easy:

1) multi-megabyte intros vs 64k (that is, more than twenty times bigger, not twice)
2) the numbers: In the first 15 days of this year I found at least 4 multi megabytes intros out of about 10 intro section submissions (versus about 20 among demos, intros, diskmag etc posted in the whole last year).

Nontheless, I'm not an Atari/Falcon expert, so I leave the idea/work of deciding what is ok and what is wrong to falcon users/demomaker.

I don't want to make a general improvement to pouet, an improvement I'm not even able to understand. What I understand is that there is a problem which, if not solved in short time, can make the whole pouet PC intro archive completely meaningless.

Honestly, I don't think it's ignorance. I'd rather say that there's a new wave of people thinking that an intro is just an introduction to something (the new year, the scene, etc) so I asked for a more clear category where to put all the "64kb intros".

how about just making the 'add prod' page a little clearer, putting a category description under the box (something like '64kb for PC, 40kb for C64 xx for Falcon....')

if people still put 4mb prods as intros we'll at least know for sure that they're utterly stupid and not just lazy.

Otherwise how about just having a max filesize for an intro? it would stop people putting 512kb bmp files into a 30kb intro's zip too.

How about making the 'add prod' page a moderated process ? Ok, it'll need to have a bunch of moderators to check what's added but it'll avoid the submission of fake prods, not demo-scene related things and eventual tentatives of DB flood.

But if you wanna add some categories, yeah, go on :
512b, 40k, 64k, 96k, 100k,

and why not leaving the choice to add a new platform in the 'add prod' page ?

the submission process could check by itself wheter the .zip you are going to submit under the intro section is smaller than, say, 100kb or not... if not the .zip would be rejected even before the upload process begins... it's a matter of one if-then thingie, should be easy implementing it :)

soolta, some final-versions of 64kb intros could be more than 100kb in size :-)
...and almost all distribution zips of 4k intros are a lot bigger than 4k, on pc anyway.

Not to speak of <= 256b intros, where the nfo file alone is often bigger than the actual release. :)

btw there were also 80k compos on pc, so let's add one to the number of new categories :)
[so it seems quite clear that the 'exact N kbytes categories' approach is not so useful]

ps.: don't forget the dentros... :))

I'm thinking what we don't want is flagrant abuse, so making sure that nothing in the intro category is larger than half a megabyte would be a good idea. Other than that, just have a system where if you ever find an intro that's way too big (or too small) you could report it.
Less strenuous than reviewing the hundreds already in there, but things would seep through the cracks...

100% agree with crusader.

we don't need the filesize in the category name if everyone can find it out by looking into the zip file after approx. 10 seconds of downloading, thank you very much. :)

ryg: my point was not "let's put a filesize".

The point was that about a month ago I saw some replies to a comment "hey, but this isn't an intro" that sounded like "you're a pedant asshole" (about a multi megabyte 2MB "intro").

Is a 2MB thing "an intro?"
If it is, let's make a smaller category (call it "small intros" or "really small intros" or "the-category-formerly-known-as-intros", whatever you want).
If it is not, please allow someone to kill all the f*.*ing nonintro thingies from the intro category.

In both cases, I offer as a volunteer. Or I offer ramsus as a volunteer admin if you prefer ;)

If 2 megs can be an intro, then I declare myself an intro.
Why not make a "Dentro" category.

"dentro /den'troh/

[demoscene] Combination of
demo (sense 4) and intro. Other name mixings include
intmo, dentmo etc. and are used usually when the authors are not
quite sure whether the program is a demo or an intro.
Special-purpose coinages like wedtro (some member of a group got
married), invtro (invitation intro) etc. have also been
sighted."

i always thought dentros were no bigger then 512k or something. they just werent called intros couz they surpassed the 40k/64k/80k/128k limit.. but they were still architected as intros as in beeing somewhat size optimized and small and stuff..

for example, vip2 invtro is an invtro but its clearly not a dentro couz its way big.

so i guess it makes some sort of sense to call dentros to really small demos that were meant as intros. but not to demos that are beeing called intros despite beeing created as just demos.

why cant we just call everything a demo and live happy ever after? :PPP
