"Spacenight" searching for CC music

category: offtopic [glöplog]
The german channel BR (Bavarian Broadcasting, public funded) was broadcasting over the last years videos from the space shuttles and stations during nighttime. They used music that was copyrighted (mostly electronic music). Unfortunatly a new fee system from the german GEMA for using this music makes it too expensive, so they stopped broadcasting and look into alternatives like self produced music or CC music.

You find recordings of it on YouTube:
http://www.dragontape.com/#!/2942025

There are a couple of initiatives of fans to collect music to suggest it to the broadcaster. I think a lot of demoscene music would fit very nicely over images from earth made in space. :o)

So, if you would like to suggest your music to be used, you might add yourself here:
http://wiki.superpolar.com/index.php?title=GEMA-freie_Musik_f%C3%BCr_die_SpaceNight

Or contact the broadcaster directly:
http://www.br.de/unternehmen/service/kontakt/index.html

I actually suggested demoscene related music myself a couple of years ago to them, but they declined, because they werent planning on making new episodes and were happy with the music they already were using. Since this has changed, it might be a good chance to promote demoscene music on a broader scale.

I used to love watching this on sleepless nights back in the 90s (not had satellite TV since).

From what I remember, the music was generally quite chilled out - which would rule out a big chunk of demoscene music. I guess there's enough left to fill many hours though :)

You'd need to get permission from the authors though (or check if there's any copyright restrictions specified with the track). It's going to be a lot of work.

I'd say get in touch with them first, see if they're interested, and perhaps supply a few example tracks. If they're interested we could get a playlist + permissions together then.

Btw, I remember they used to also play some quite demoish videos as well as the space video - maybe they'd play a few actual demos? What would be a good demo to show with a nice chilled-out vibe?

I did a concept album a couple of years ago that maybe could fit.

When it comes to BR-Spacenight'ish music, Radix and Planet Boelex pop into mind.

Spacenight. Boy was that a great show in the 90's. Enjoyed preferably dead stoned :D

The membership is no longer viable in the gema... I got many plays in TV and Radio... The Gema-billings were ridiculous.

I think there's a future for non-gema and non-publisher "copyright control" music. But there must always a little buyout for the song. imho.

When I emailed ihatemornings to check whether the Avocado soundtrack was covered by the UK's GEMA-equivalent (as per Evoke rules), he was so annoyed at being prevented from using his own music where he wanted, that he cancelled his membership on the spot. I didn't actually *ask* him to do that, but it turns out he'd been annoyed at the uselessness of the whole system for a while, and this was the final straw. :-)

With incidents like these (and this), it's clear that GEMA is doing a great job of screwing over its own goals. I think we should start referring to these organisations as a "Music Prevention Agency".

fortunately alternatives like Cultural Commons Collecting Society (C3S) are on the rise..
their goal is more fairness and artist-participation, e.g. they want to allow the artists to decide wether a particular piece of music shall be licenced or released for free.. (which is, if i got that right, not possible under gema/biem)
added on the 2013-02-20 15:18:03 by v3nom v3nom
Well, I've researched the gema/biem issues for quite some time now.

The way I see it: Artists CHOOSE to be represented by them. The people who are fucked over are not the artists but people playing stuff BY registered artists.

In general, I think it's good for artists to be represented and have the royalties collected for you. Apparently not many of them realize that they give away their freedom of choice about what's happening with their music.

If you are a composer and you want to offer your music to be used for Space Night (old episodes are getting new soundtracks too btw), send it to this address:

space.night@br.de

D.Fox: registered artists tend to play their own stuff :) the rest is true, but said. artists cant even play their own stuff for free, afaik.

Okay, I just sent my suggestions to the team of Space-Night. I suggested a lot of demoscene related music tracks. Let's see if they pick up my suggestions and contact some of the composers to free their music. I think it is time to show the public the high quality of music making in the demoscene community! :)

Salinga: But aren't quite some of these musicians registered with a gema affiliate? :)
added on the 2013-02-24 16:33:04 by Puryx Puryx
@Purix: I dont know, they have to clear that. And I am pretty sure they do it already with every song they want to use for broadcast, even if it's declared as CC on a website, so I dont worry.

Um, no...? Up to now, they were paying GEMA to do that job. I thought the whole point of this exercise was for the supporters/general public to take on that role, and provide BR with a source of already-cleared tracks, so that they could continue making programmes in the same way as before (and not have to hire extra people to chase up individual artists)?

If you are working professionally, and you cannt get a license from a legal representation of an artists, you of course contact an artist personally and get a clearence from the artist itself. Thats what I did when I was working on websites and I wanted to use images that were declared as free-to-use. If you dont do that, you never can be sure not to get a letter from a lawyer, because you never know if what a website states is true. There have been cases of images declared as free-to-use, that were uploaded by an imposter and the ones trusting the disclaimer on the website still got a letter from a lawyer and lost in lawsuits against them.

"Space Night" is going to be a show broadcast on Free-TV via Astra satellite all over Europe. You can be sure before a track is used they get a written clearance from the tracks composer. So if they get a letter from a lawyer someday, they can point to that.

You can now directly upload your music to be used as soundtrack for the show:

All of our releases (from Enough Records) are CC. Some of them are even tagged as space music. If anyone feels like uploading some of them, they're listed right here i'm on temporary slow as hell internet right now, can't do it myself atm.
