I've been collecting recordings of Demoscene prods across (mainly Amiga and PC) for years now, but for a long time had to rely on remembering just the titles and groups, although they were sorted by the groups and titles so it was easy.

Up until earlier this year, I was tagging these MP3 files my own way, which didn't fit in with most MP3 albums - heck, they didn't even have track numbers as new files were being inserted all the time - but then I decided once and for all to take all the MP3 files I created and tag them according to the conventions specified by Amazon MP3 and Google Music albums. At this time, I also discovered the joys of being able to add my own album art, so they became presentable alongside the Amazon MP3 and Google Music tracks.

So what I did was take all of the Demoscene MP3s (which each represents a single Demoscene prod, with all mods included, in order) and randomise them so that I didn't have to go back and reorganise them with new additions later, unlike before. Then I put them in groups of nine - no more, no less. Why? Because with the album art ability, I could use a screenshot of each prod featured (mostly from Pouet.net) and put them in a single piece of album art as a 3x3 grid, and it looks so cool as a result!

So that means that every single prod I've got as an MP3 is visible within the album art, so I can search for and find them easily - it also looks GREAT as presentation. This has given my Demoscene MP3 collection a whole new lease of life!

I should point out that this is FOR MY OWN USE ONLY and I WILL NOT SELL these albums, but I'm just putting the idea out there for someone else to try. I think it might be popular. What do you all think?

well its nice that you care such a lot about your collection and selling it would be indeed a bad idea. But if you put such a big effort, why not present your 'albums' on a website for free download and/or streaming?

I should also point out that the Amiga recordings are almost all mono, to save space.

Another thing about these is that the tags are single-case:

ARTIST is all upper-case
TITLE is all lower-case
ALBUM is all lower-case

Hope no-one minds this, but I quite like the stylised look of it, and it eliminates headaches as to what the case for individual letters should be :)

On Scene.org, I've seen several ISO images of DVDs for unofficial Amiga demos, and the Demo or Die! series - could I use Scene.org to upload these albums as ZIPs?

since they are technically not scene-releases themselfes i doubt that is the place for it.
hosting space is not so rare anymore tho.
If its a demoscene related site you want to host (and it sounds like it sure is) theres is always untergrund.net for free webspace and sql, though you need to ask scamp for entry first ;D

I could contact Scamp, but then again, I never made a website for the albums and I wouldn't be able to do an excellent one, so I think that just a directory of the ZIPs would be necessary.

i like the concept of the demovibes mixtapes a little better.

also i don't picking the 9 tracks randomly, would make more sense to keep them in groups of themes of some sort.

you could do a public readonly bittorrent sync folder out of them, so you would maintain the list, whoever wanted to check it could do so easily (as long as you're online to sync the files), and the more people who do the less traffic you get out of your machine directly.

just some thoughts.

Nine tracks is simply so that the album art can have equal space for each prod.

And randomising them is no problem as long as you can filter them out by Artist, and I've done that many times with no issues.

What ps said. Most clients will let you make a torrent (& often produce a working magnet link) put it here and I reckon you'd have half a doz. seeders easily once they've dl'd it. I'll put my hand up to.

You mean you've got gigs worth?

36 albums devoted to mostly Amiga, PC and a few other platforms - altogether, something like 324 prods.

And by several ISO images of DVDs, I meant the ones hosted by others alongside "Demo or Die!" on Scene.org - not my space.

I've never attempted to host torrents before, but wouldn't I have to keep my PC online all the time?

Initially, yes. But after a couple of people (say me and Brony-Boy) have dl'ded as long as we continue to seed then it doesn't matter whether you're there on not. The rule of thumb is the more seeders the quicker the dl will be. you could always sign up at kickass or such like (I'm on KAT and no complaints) and have them host the torrent (you still need to have you machine on tho).

If you're worried about bandwidth/leaving your machine on then Salinga's suggestion is probably worth a go. Not too sure how - works in this situation tho.

That or rar it all up and put on mega. Hey if it's under 2gb then sign up a throw away dropbox and post it there. Either way I'll bbe waiting to listen.

I'll look closely at Mixcloud, but one last thing: what about permissions from the groups, etc?

I'd suggest you draw up a list of artists - start gazzing who you can thu info here and scene.org the rest maybe pass onto Garj and ask nicely if he's prepared to help. A daily request on #revision might help as well.

Probably worthwhile bumping this thread everyday just so peeps'll see it and check the list.

Tagging the files this way is an okay idea. If you're just doing for your own collection, that is. Spreading badly tagged files (without artists) is an appalling behavior.
