I've noticed on the "fitness thread" that someone was eating soylent. I've been eating joylent (a dutch variant of soylent, the first one I've found that would ship to Portugal) for a while now, almost every day for 1 or 2 months now (I've lost count). It's pretty good once you get used to it, but it's so fucking boring to eat the same shit every fucking day :S
It's great as party food if you get tired of the local fast food and want something "healthier". I wonder how many of you have tried it.

You are not supposed to eat the "same shit every fucking day" !
You're supposed to receive the vital fibres, proteins, vitamins, carbo-hydrates a.s.o. via chewing and digesting a variety of food, that is not industrially processed crap.
Concentrated food supplements are just ... well, a supplement to balance out potential lacks of said ingredients.
A vital "key to health" is: cut the refined sugar from the daily diet !

I won't even touch the "Joylend" if it were for free. I rather stick to some food supplements that complement the daily diet, such as Spirulina and Omega Formula fats.
All the "Joylent" in the world won't help your health if the rest of your diet and way of living is toxic and/or destructive.

What d0DgE posted. I've also looked at this quite a bit and concluded that (at least currently) there's really no silver bullet that'll solve everything nutrition-wise, and I've also tended to gravitate towards just eating self-prepared food made from quality ingredients, cutting down portion sizes and complementing regular food with animal & plants-based protein drinks after working out etc.

Have to agree with d0DgE here. The very least, such a "diet" where you only "eat" industrially processed "food" will do your mental health in.

its not a food supplement. its a complete meal replacement. You get more of the fibres, proteins and vitamins you need than you could assemble on your own. I don't have the time or motivation to shop and cook healthy food. Having this extra time for school, work, hobbies and partying goes a long way. The Soylent recipe is based on the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine and is approved as a food by the Food and Drug Administration.

Soylent mostly replaces my breakfast and lunch. I still eat real food for dinner. I will likely return to my habit of 100% ordering delivery food / restaurant dining in a few months. I enjoy drinking my Bachelor Chow. I haven't died from it yet. Its just an experiment.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree.
Your metabolic function starts at your mouth. Chewing and using your teeth and jaws is an essential part of a healthy metabolism. Not eating, i.e. just drinking herbal tea etc., is an effective method of detoxification and overall body-discipline -- fasting.
Activist vegans might have hijacked the slogan but it is profoundly true: You are what you eat -- correctly phrased: what you eat will turn into your flesh and blood.
That part of converting actual food into all these nutrients is done by the organs of your body. Withholding this activity from your organs due to bypassing the break-down and synthesis actions of your metabolic system by drinking a mushy substance will prevent these organs from doing their job they're designed to do.
And what about the fun-factor, the feeling of accomplishment about a properly prepared meal from top-notch fresh stuff you either have grown yourself or bought from local folks that earned your trust ?

Weak analogy warning

If you have a diesel or petrol powered car and just tow-pulling it to every destination you're willing to go and never actually use the motor (i.e. the metabolic system of an automobile) this motor will render itself dysfunctional eventually when you suddenly start the ignition (i.e. digesting "food" ) after a long period w/o proper preperation.

Also I've cooked, they show me how to cook. I've done it. Because people are like "You haven't tried to cook. It's so easy! Why don't you cook?". But I have tried it many times. Will do it some times too. But can't be bothered to do it daily. And that's it.

Instead of relying on science (which doesn't really ultimately know what is good or bad) and authorities (Institute of Medicine, Food and Drug Administration, etc.) of which businesses are prone to corruption, it is often better to rely on 2 mechanisms inbuilt in ourselves:
1. Apetite, which basing on what we lack in organism urges us to eat certain foods,
2. Common sense.

Also I suspect that if you only drink goo for long enough period of time (months? years?), your digestive system will forget how to deal with real food and when you come back to chewing and eating you may be not able to digest it anymore - you'll vomit and shit your guts out.

From what I've gathered over the last years:

  • Cut processed sugars and starches (rules out all instant meals)
  • Generally eat less carbohydrates, eat more fat and proteins and fiber
  • For fat, eat mostly saturated fat (most animal fats and cocoa fat. anything that is solid in the fridge). Monounsaturated fats are okay but not great (olive oil). For polyunsaturated fats, watch your ω-6 to ω-3 ratio: most cheap fats are rich in ω-6 and we get way too much of those and not enough ω-3. Avoid most kernel oils (sunflower etc), best source for ω-3 is sea fish like salmon or linseed oil.
  • There is no such thing as too much cholesterol in eggs. Eat eggs. Eggs are awesome. Soy protein is so-so.
  • Gluten in wheat and other cereals is bad, even if you're not gluten sensitive. Try to substitute starches like rice or potatoes or buckwheat or whatevs.
  • Use fresh and high-quality ingredients and prepare it yourself. In restaurants you get the cheap sunflower oil etc.
  • Eat varied. nobody really understands nutrition. There is no respectable nutrition scientist in the world that knows which combination of substances our bodies really need. This makes me think that things like soylent cannot work with our present understanding, although in theory such a thing might be possible. Also there's a few micronutrients that don't take well to being stored for a long time. To account for the unknowns and the errors, diversify. Also for the taste.
  • It's all about the big picture. For example, I eat pizza at demoparties and I eat my grandma's cookies but basically no wheat on most days. There's no point in making life unnecessary hard by sticking to strict rules.
  • When any nutrient is missing, you get hungry but you don't necessarily feel what's missing. So if you eat something that is deficient in one thing, you get hungry again soon. If you eat the same thing again (Pizza every day), the cycle repeats and you are still deficient but have eaten much more than necessary because you were hungry. So, again, eat varied, especially if you want to lose weight.


The anecdotal evidence of how it worked for me: I've been doing this for 1.5 years now and recently added salmon for ω-3 reasons ~once a month to my otherwise meat-free food. Haven't been sick from work for a single day in the last year. Dental health has gone from bad to very good. Reducing carbohydrates at lunch has almost eliminated the afternoon slump. Eating good food makes me happy :)

Now excuse me while I eat my insanely fatty and garlicy roasted sweetpotato and cauliflower with ungodly amounts of sour cream.

also, a good way to block "hunger" is by snacking some dry roasted almonds/cashew or chew on licorice roots
