Why is there only a top _10_?????

category: general [glöplog]

When looking for some cool demos, it would be nice if there were more than 10 entries in the top. It should be a top 'unlimited' imo.

(ofcause only the 10 best should be on the frontpage, but when clicking "more..." it would be nice if it was possible to browse through top 11748)

If it's allready possible feel free to kick+ban me from pouet :)

Mmm,.. this is based on popularity but still good. There wasn't any button though to get this..

Aha! Just go to the list, see the tab headers? Clicking on them sets the sorting order!

Sometimes the underrated unpopular gems are the most tasty.
Name a few!

Nevertheless, pouet is lacking such a top *** function. Because of the "popularity" I could not find some rather great demos at first, like bakkslide, _, coma and so on. Some other prods, e.g. project kerosene, will never get the attention they deserve because even though they have only thumbs up, noone ever finds them because of their low popularity rating.
Popularity should work by thumb up/pigface/down ratio. The pure number of thumbs (or websites linking the product) should be secondary.

its nothing new that popularity reflects the popularity and not the quality.
anything diferent would be subjective.
check what other people who seem to have close taste to yours are thumbing if you want to find out good stuff

True. Thats what I am doing.
However, there are ways to improve the popularity counter, e.g. the one I presented.
I think it would generally lead to better results, because unknown products with a good ratio but only a few thumbs would be just as popular as well known products with a good ratio.
There are many more things that could be done, like taking the average rating of each voter into consideration or allowing the rating to range on a scale from 1-10, maybe even split it up into graphic/music/design and so on.
I think that would help, regardless of personal taste.

And it would be really nice if there were generakky more comments in the form of"if you like this you also like...".

this must be the 938042th time the "popularity VS quality"-rakning issue has been up for debate.. :)

I agree with mjz when it comes to way that the quality should be computed. I recommend adding an extra 'quality' field in the demo database. So the top10 will be computed by taking both popularity and quality in consideration, say 30% popularity, 70% quality or something - popularity must make less difference, or we just come to the point we are right now.

In the 'prods' section one may have the option to use the 'top-n' sort method, or the classic method based on database fields. So one may just see what's going after top10, someone else may want to see what the top-quality prods are and lastly someone else may want to see the most popular demos.

In any case, computing the top10 based on popularity is a bad idea. Is like computing an operating system top10 based on popularity; Windows will come first but unix variants are considiered better by Those Who Know.

ps, wrong again. popularity reflects quality, or so i've been able to establish with emperical proof of which the following is an excerpt:

1) justin timberlake sells, and rocks
2) the popular demo is popular, and rocks
3) chimera is not popular, and sucks
4) autechre don't sell, and suck
5) the neptunes sell, and rock
6) "the matrix" is popular, and rocks
7) "angela's ashes" is not popular, and sucks (miserable, even)

believe me, it's not for nothing your neighbour is a fish salesman without a record deal and lumidee isn't.
