Pain not compatible with Windows 10?

category: general [glöplog]
I am unable to run Pain issue #58 on my Windows 10 notebook. Pain issue #59 final does work. Probably older issues wouldn't work either. Does anyone else have the same problem and will a patch be released?

Unfortunately this cannot be simply fixed by using the executable from Pain #59 final in Pain #58 because the screen resolution was different in issue 58 and therefore it is not compatible with the engine. :(

Good news: I noticed the engine of Pain issue #57 does work and it is compatible with Pain #58. So Pain #58 can be read using the engine of Pain #57. Apparently it is a single-issue problem but older issues are not affected.

#59 works just fine on my Win10.

So does #58.

Then there must be some other reason. Anyway, I can read Pain #58 using the executable from Pain #57.

Windowed mode works wonders.

I don't get to the window where you select full-screen or windowed mode. Compatibility mode doesn't get it to work either.

i think you can force windowed mode on config file or command line argument

If you don't get that window, it means you ticked the box not to show it. Gotta clear registry :)

No. It isn't that. Otherwise it wouldn't work for the other issues either. But I get a window with options for the other issues.

The application simply does nothing.

it just complains of a missing MFC71.dll here. need to install a specific vcredist i guess, can't be bothered to find out which one right now. or find a trustworthy demo/game which packaged it and copy it to the same directory.

i can confirm pain #59 just works.

might be a bug in the engine itself which got fixed on #59... or different compilation of some sort. no clue.

ps: Thanks! It was the missing mfc71.dll file. After downloading it and copying it into the directory where I unzipped Pain #58, it worked. Strange enough, I didn't receive a message informing me that the dll was missing.

you might have windows 10 configured on the registry not to popup certain error messages of applications, and just crash silently. event viewer usually still displays these error messages.

don't think it'll ever happen. internet deprecated diskmags. there are more interesting emerging formats to satisfy what diskmags covered.

A diskmag is like a box of candy you never know whats inside untill you open it.
The entire package with awesome gfx, music and indeed the articles itself
makes the entire experience.. (also from a demoscene perspective)
Come to think of it, last issue of Hugi http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=63557
is already from 2014.. hmm.... But next year it's the 10th year without a pain issue.. :/
