Hitchhiker's Guide to the Demoscene

category: general [glöplog]

Single white long-haird non-smoking nose-picking butt-scratching heterosexual vegetarian anarco-hippie male seeks ride from Frankfurt to Hemsbach in late December. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candle-lit dinners, slurpees, and of course demos.

Seriously though, I'm going to be visiting tUM*o4 in the coming months and was wondering if I could bum a ride to Hemsbach. (And back again after the party.) I'd be most grateful. If not, I guess I shall be experiencing German rail travel instead.
mostly harmless
The train facilities are not bad at all (it took me about 1 hour from the main airport to the party last year), and the partyplace is kinda close to the train station in Hemsbach.

Yep, go by train... if you can stand the people inside iit for one hour (I almost didn't, but then I understand the language.) it's the best solution. The train starts at Frankfurt central station and the party place is like 5-10 walk minutes away from the Hemsbach station.

I travelled there last year from England, via like 40 countries, and I must say the car way sucks more than train. The train to Breakpoint 04 was far more relaxing than driving across Europe in a Mazda 323 to tUM*03.

Still wondering if I want to come to tUM*04 or not... If I do, I'd be taking Origin and Sack/DC-S again, and then they wouldn't come to Breakpoint... Decisions, decisions...

Okee-dokee, train it is. I guess Europe in general values public transit far more than North America, so it's probably a more viable option than I'm otherwise used to. (For that matter, where I live now is lacking even in the sidewalk department.)

The only problem is I only know how to say three words in German -- colour, intoxication, tool -- which probably won't be tremendously useful when asking for directions.
Feel free to use any of these direction-guides:

English: How do I get to the trainstation?
German: Wo kann ich das nächste Prostituiertee finden?

English: Is this the party place?
German: Woher erhalte ich einen Schlagjob?

English: Excuse me Sir, could I come with you to the party place?
German: Mich entschuldigen geehrter Herr, konnten ich Ihnen einen Schlagjob geben?
Eine Blitzen:
A pen.

Eine Flachmetuchen:
A table.

Wir haben Pflichtmitten in der Heineplatz:
There is sauerkraut in my lederhosen.

Nächtlich mit der Stall, in der Bürgerplatz:
I want a schnauzer with my Wienerschnitzel.

Herr Hauptbahnhof! Der Froschwerfer ist kaputt!

thom: maybe a good idea would be trying to find some sceners who also plan to go to TUM from Frankfurt and try to join them when you're there - assuming they know where to go.

credo di essermi sporcato i pantaloni (Yeah, it's italian, sorry)

thom: I'm guessing you've never seen an Englishman in France ;) EVERYONE understands if you just talk loudly and slowly! Failing that... do impressions ;) Best thing to do in Germany is to start talking in German, as far as you can, then immediately ask something along the lines of "Kann mann Englisch sprechen bitte?" and they'll look at you funny (that apparently makes no sense in German) and speak broken English. NEVER say Sprechen Sie Englische, or they'll just say no, fearing you might use big words like plastifonification or cheese.

I think it's more polite to say "Konnen Sie Englisch sprechen?" and that' makes sense :P

i'll never forget the moment when we came back from Breakpoint 2003 and in Munchen, Tomcat asked the helpdesk girl "Sprechen sie Deutsch?" :D

slav: The whole point is to say something confusing, to say I can't speak German, but look, I tried! Hey, I got a C at GCSE German!

btw.
if you don't have any means of transportation to get to tUM or if you have a seat left in your car/plane/train, let the others know :) (at http://www.tum-party.org/rides.php)

More useful german phrases you might want to try:

Meine ruher ist kaput (I missed my ride)
Ja, ich bin warm (Yes, I am warm enough)
