oh and popularity is what pleases our ego's.

and making winning demos is NOT about writing the neatest code any longer.. every idiot could have written a (lightwave?) scene replayer without smart culling.

it's about the materials.

comments on pouet ARE very harsh sometimes - it's something i've learned to appreciate, but also to hate sometimes. people are unfair here, people are subjective, people do hurt others on purpose here, insults are frequent, people seem to hate everything they are not totally in love with, respect is rare. you definitely need a thick skin.

but: a demo at a party, in a compo, is not the same as a demo (or intro) at home. when you're at home, you are not part of a group of 800 people watching, you usually don't have a choreography of which productions are shown in what order, you don't have a 25m² bigscreen and led zeppelin pa, you're usually not awake for 30+ hours.

that's all i have to say, thanks for listening

uhm, why is it so hard for people to read subjective opinions on their productions?

and diver, you're just a pitty excuse for a scener i bet your only contribution is to clean the toilets after MS.
shifter: there needs to be some rule that gives the orgas the power to censor a release. otherwise we could just dump 67142371423 fake shit prods just to annoy them.

stefan: stop talking crap man. cant you write a constructive comment for a change?

Sigh....plek plek plek you PARANOID plek. =)

PS: there's censorship to filter out the crap, and there's filtering out mediocre products that did have some sort of effort put into them (Like newbie releases). I probably didn't really get your angle on that.

The demoscene is and always has been a pissing contest of young big egos. Go and read any old diskmag and you'll see similar (if not the same) arguments you see here over and over. Important sceners calling other important sceners lamers for 'ripping' a palette in some amiga demo.

Bitching and flaming has always been at the core of the demoscene, imo. It has always been a natural filter, those who cannot stand criticism know their way out.

The point is that if anything, the internet and these websites make bitching more accessible to anyone.

I find it surprising that people like haujobb are victimizing themselves about this, I mean they've been in the scene for fucking ages they should know how this works. Fuck public forums, if you like what you do, fuck the rest and do it.

Taking onto yourselves the crusade of making a "politically correct demoscene" where any shit is good shit, ain't gonna cut it.

If this attitude of "negative criticism makes me upset, so I quit" was more common I wonder where people like Satori, Halcyon and Da Jormas would be today, they took shit from everybody and they keep going their own way, kudos to them.

well, definition of mediocre/newbie varies alot on your tastes.
like it did on this mekka symposium obviously.
crap should be filtered. uncomprehended crap should not.

sin: did you read anywhere a text from haujobbers saying haujobb quit the scene because of these sort of comments? couz i didnt..
added on the 2002-04-07 18:31:35 by psenough psenough
I didn't either. I am just refering to the subjects mentioned in the posts above and the news that have been making the rounds lately. Werther they quit or not I still think that doesn't invalidate my point.

now to give my bit about the topic.
first of all there is to say, that haujobb did wrong "quitting" the scene (I still don't
believe they really did...) as this reaction now seems more like childish to me. yes, there
have been several extremely stupid comments about hjb and demos by them (I remember someone
wishing hjb to quit the scene...) but is this the right reaction ? don't you maybe take this
a bit too serious ? o.k, comments often can hurt here (and I'm honest that I also wrote
negative comments about some hjb demos here, but not for the reason because they are made
by haujobb but coz I didn't like them; simple as that) but: if someone doesn't like your
production I can't see anything bad, tastes are diverse. but if someone dislikes a prod
because it's made by xyz, why don't you simply ignore it ? there are so many people who
write bad commments about e.g. hjb or fr just because they are obviously jealous about their
successes. yes, this sucks, but taking it serious ? many people don't like the stuff I do,
so what the hell. it's their fucking right to like what they want. but just because of that
quitting the scene or reacting in another extreme way ?
o.k, it was surely not only the things during the days after mekka that caused hjb to do
what they did, also I must say that there are certain tendencies in the scene I really
dislike, means things like:
1) "you suck"
2) "I don't know you, you suck"
3) "I know you, but I know no prod, so you suck also"
4) "I know you, I know a prod but this sucks, so you suck"
some "sceners" spend more time to tell other people that they and their prods and basically
everything else than themselves or their stuff sucks. I wonder what gives anyone the right
to tell someone he sucks (except he is constantly doing stupid things no compatible with the
principles of the scene), especially when basing that on things like the membership to a
certain group.
why not overread certain comments that are not constructive at all ? if you would be angry
about everything in the world you could be angry about, you would have already committed
suicide for sure. just look, there are people who call everything that does not fit their
taste a boring 3d-flybye. yes, e.g. the.product surely doesn't give you fx all the time,
most things are static, but calling it boring or not impressive shows either complete
ignorance or they are just angry about not beeing able to do the same. and then there are
those people who simply don't like anything (like macaw (nothing personal, dude), I wonder
why he didn't quit demowatching yet if nothing pleases him anyways). those are comments
my brain already filters out automatically.
oh, some very smart dude might state out now that I didn't give "adrenalin" full rating
although it's comparable to the "product" style:
a) it's a huge demo, not a 64k
b) without the pushing soundtrack the.product probably would be much less impressive to me
as well as adrenalin would have kicked alot more to me with another soundtrack.
after all, think about why you make demos. isn't it because it is fun for you, because it
gives you something and you can express yourself in a form of art or technics or whatever ?
I don't really believe that someone makes demo for just winning a party. although some people
believe so, I can't imagine elitegroup made kasparov just because of the many gamers at TP
and to win it. exceed won assembly '2k with a demo that surely wasn't gamer style, hjb took
place 2 with a demo that fits even less gamer-style. so those comments are simply stupid.
of course, as delax already said, also I dream of once winning a major party (or any party
at all) but when I won't (what is more likely to happen :)) I won't start crying and go home.
I make demos for fun and for the (to me) beloved scene and after all there is only a bunch
of people who have really to like it. currently that's 8 dudes and include me and are
actually, very simple to guess, my group. why should I make demos just to please others ?
so comments, that certain demos were just made to win or to please gamers are somewhat
extremely stupid.
umm, I hope I didn't get away too far from the topic ;)
and don't start "styx, you suck" now. I won't care anyways. make demos.
added on the 2002-04-07 19:31:35 by styx^hcr styx^hcr
styx: macaw *does* like certain demos, it's only very few. respect his opinion. i mean, he also says that the demos/intros i was involved in suck, but i don't hate him because of that, it's simply the truth :)

"... but calling it boring or not impressive shows either complete
ignorance or they are just angry about not beeing able to do the same. "

no, this shows a kind of taste that differs from yours, accept it. you're being subjective here, too. even if a demo/intro is technically impressive, you still don't have to give it a thumb up and say "that rules". there's more to demos than just the technically side. demos come in different flavours, take fr08 and different engine/satori as two extremes for example. not everybody will like all kinds of styles at the same time. that's natural diversity.

Eiiijaaaaa. Pocafeina ownz you people.

Make productions just for fun! As SiN said, if you like what you are doing, fuck the rest.

Every voting system has its problems, but public voting just sucks. People often vote the last showed productions or the ones they could remember (naked girls, funny things)... moreover, friendship or namevoting gives a lot of votes. Adrenalin won the demo compo at ms2002 because it was awesome in the big screen IMHO (and it was from Smash Designs }:)

Well, i know it is a "bit" too long and its a 3d player, but there is a lot of work in it, there is no reason to flame the people who made it. You can say your opinion but don't destroy the other's work.

I think we have to abolish prizes from parties, they create corruption.

PD: SiN is gay :)

\n\n is a good start for formating texts in long posts to make them readable and maybe expose arguments in different paragraphs instead of number/letters enumeration..

nn is a good example of formating text to make them unreadable and maybe expose arguments of different people instead of model citizen krap matter.

Abolish cash prizes or sponsored crap with a defined value to it. Do trophies and shit. TRSAC had ducks, and boy are they neat!...okay, the gold paint chipped minutes after we got the duck, but it's the thought that counts ;)

The dutch have this corny saying: "It's all about the game, not the marbles".

Yeah, abolish cash prizes, and spend the money on hookers and dope! Demos are not about money!

shifter: we do?
