an outsider view to the scene

category: general [glöplog]
just thought this was interesting... a piece of a log from #modarchive, which is basically a hangout for (ex) tracker musicians. somehow i get the feeling that some of aciddose's opinions aren't so rare among non-sceners. heko isn't me btw.

* Heko (TMAjava@ool-43571c0f.dyn.optonline.net) has joined #modarchive
<Heko> kk, anyone a demoscener?
<aciddose> Heko, we're musicians, not 'sceners'
<aciddose> try scene.org
<aciddose> the boards
<CowifieD> musicians are sexier than sceners... w/e they are
<aciddose> sceners are a bunch of lamers who watch demos, lately
<aciddose> sceners are pretty close to gamers
<aciddose> i apreciate scene coders a bit, however they dont produce much which is practical
<aciddose> they should make cool games and other software
<aciddose> not just lame 3d graphics
<aciddose> sometimes it seems rediculous, having the ablity to do graphics and physics and etc that they do, yet not using it for any practical purpose
<LoneStar> heh
<LoneStar> so games are something practical.
<LoneStar> well at least in terms of making money, they are =)
<aciddose> no, they're practical in terms of having a bit more value
<aciddose> a demo could be like a movie, if it had a plot and etc
<aciddose> but i've seen very few that ever attempted it
<aciddose> and very few over 5 minutes that you dont get bored watching
<LoneStar> most are like a mini-rave show
<aciddose> pretty much
<LoneStar> musix and gfx
<LoneStar> I'm watching them only for teh musix :O
<aciddose> very few of those are successful at being cool
<aciddose> although i've seen some by haujobb and etc
<aciddose> very cool
<LoneStar> yeah
<LoneStar> and teh Farbrausch crew
<aciddose> i didnt like any of thiers
<aciddose> except the one with the bouncin g head
<aciddose> it starts off cool
<aciddose> but then majorly sucks and ruins it

(aciddose apparently sends LoneStar a demo)

<aciddose> this is one i liked
<LoneStar> haha ad, that one
<LoneStar> you like it because of the claustrophobic dude in the background, and especially for the shrooms, no? :P
<LoneStar> and ofc the overall druggy feel
<aciddose> the moose and the effect they did with the haujobb symbol was cool
<aciddose> the music is a remix of a popular gabber track
<aciddose> the original sounds worse though
<LoneStar> well, I guess that file you're sending is too big either
<aciddose> alot of the music used in demos are just remixes of commercial tracks
<LoneStar> regarding that I'm going to bed now :P
<aciddose> like most of the fr- were commercial tracks
<aciddose> the trance and etc
<LoneStar> :OOO
<aciddose> he just made remixes
<LoneStar> well, its kinda lame to remix something and get a standard tracne track like the product. then
<aciddose> most 'scene' musicians, anyone who uses a tracker are not very great
<aciddose> the remixes he did sounded alot like the originals
<aciddose> actually when i heard the original, i was like "Hey is that a rip from the fr-06 demo?"
<aciddose> :P
<aciddose> nope, turned out its a commercial trance track

Which is why we really don't need to do recruitment. There are thousands of people like this set in their own opinions, who don't get it. And never will, and aren't worth arguing with.

The fact that some people enjoy this activity is completely lost on a lot of people. Others will attempt to ridicule it, often because they it's different and different is scary. Others will give the excuse that 'everything needs to be for a purpose' forgetting that stability and 'balance' are important.

A scener always has a healthy amount of 'I don't give a shit what you think' balanced with the need for actual valid feedback.

And, well, lamers will always be lamers. fuckings to.

I'm supposed to be coding.
somehow i do feel that working on a demo is a hueg waste of time. but i always come to the conclusion that it mus be worth it, or i wouldn't be doing it. it's about finding and breaking through your personal limit. i find democoding ten times harder than any programming job i have done for money.

usually, i'm seen as the local computer genius wherever i go. in the scene, i all of a sudden find myself surrounded by coders who can build things that i have no idea how to replicate. it makes me realize that i have a lot of headroom left for growth, and motivates me to find out how good i really am. (wait, isn't that a quote from the breakpoint site?)

so, yeah. some get it and many don't. no point in trying to talk people into becoming sceners.

sounds familar to me. i'd guess that's part of the motivation for many sceners. they're bored by all them usual ways to use a computer and don't want to be the one who only gets asked questions. they enjoy asking other people questions too. and ofcourse it just ain't as easy to impress sceners as it is with your usual lamer.

just my 0.02€

What's the point to anything?
I agree with aciddose. Demos need more entertainment value, otherwise they're just pretty patterns.
I like pretty patterns . Not everything should have a meaning..

Navis: I agree.

And for music. Most musicians rip unknowingly. everywhere.
I wouldn't say that's a very scene related thing :)
YOU CAN DISS ME, YOU CAN DISS MY LIFE, BUT DONT DISS MY HOBBY :)

Sad that everything has to be about money these days, even among creative people like musicians. And who says sceners can't make money? Lots of us has programming jobs where we make plenty of cash, but demo coding is a hobby, and hobbies are not supposed to be about making money. It's about doing stuff for fun, and I just happen to find it more fun to make pretty patterns for obsolete hardware than to keep working in my sparetime.

aciddose seems to me like just another wannabe internet musician that never made it to the big leagues and feel the need to diss someone else. it's pretty obvious to everyone here that he's "out there", but he probably thinks he has the right idea. then again, that tends to be the problem with people in general. :)

There he goes shooting off his mouth again. His lame tracker isn't worth the download or the development time. He of all people has created something unuseful. If you spend any amount if time talking to him he's pretty much, "This sucks, that sucks, I don't want to waste my time with that". His opinion isn't that rare with uber-pessimists.

(hm. wait. out of the blue actually WAS a remix. oh well, who cares)

who the fuck is aciddose and why on earth does he not have a single clue about anything, shit or stuff?

egb: leave idm and netlabels out of this. -_- modarchive==trackers not netlabel artists.
which rises the question of how come making lofi music in freeware software is practical while doing demos is not.

who cares anyways?

hahahah.. readling conversations of clueless people is quite amusing. I'd say; Fuck 'm!! if they don't like it, we sure as hell don't want them in! Let them make mediocre music for their 'community' and leave us the fuck alone :)
