Invitations

category: general [glöplog]

There almost seem to be more party invitations than good releases and, unfortunately, few party invitations are also good releases.

I find it annoying.

having party invitations at the democompo is pretty much like having demos with advertising, that's messed up.

It's also a brilliant way to make pr for a party i guess. I can live with it as i never felt tempted to vote for any invitation prod in demo/intro compo anyways.

Note: I don't mean that invitations are bad in general.
The idea is that "hey, it's an invitation, don't expect much!" it's not an excuse to release any kind of crap in the democompo of a top-class international party.
If you really have to make an invitation, and want to get some massive attention at a big demoparty, at least make it look good (hint: search for "nuance" in Pouet's search bar).
If you can't, just release at some minor party and don't spam good democompos.

I think if people start thinking: "oh, this is not good enough, I am not going to release it" we finally will end with parties with no submissions. Which is way more annoying than having a lot of semiboring unpolished entries; at least with these ones you have an excuse to remain in the main warm hall while outside is pouring with rain.

Of course there must be always some kind of selfcriticism :) But I'd rather encourage releases; it's better than simply going to a party and drink beer after beer... although I am part of the invtros invassion too, so I'll assume my fault as well, hehe...
i didnt find the invatations that bad. and it weren't so many anyways.

nooooo... this should be like television!! 30 minutes of advertising in the middle of a movie! XD enough to go for some coke, chips, blah...
Am I the only one who enjoys watching crappy demos? They are sometimes much more entertaining than some random hitech-flyby-idm shit. And what's the hurry with the compo? In my opinion it's better to watch 30 demos with some (entertaining) crap within than some five boring good demos.

yeah I agree, I sometimes prefer to watch some funny, short timed demos instead of those "hi! I have latest high tech card! I can move more polys than you! f*ck you!". Innovation is good, experimentation and pushing the hardware limits is good as well but hey...
sole: if "funny" and "short timed" are the keywords then yes, I share your point... everything goes as long as it's entertaining and/or inspired.
On the other hand, releasing uninspired, quick hacks labelled as invitations is criminal.
I agree with your "ads time" idea tho: one invitation every 5/7 demos to break tension and provide time for wc or beer.

Megamies: entertaining crap != boring "invitational" crap

i think a good hand-rule is to simply not release invitros in democompos.

why? well, simply because demos are supposed to be impressive and doing the bling-bling whereas invitros are supposed to be informative. those two don't mix too well. and, as we all have noticed, a lot of invitros makes democompos drag out way too long.

In my mind, invitros should be played off-compo. They're announcing an event.
OK, invitros can be real good (Moppi, Calodox, Popsy...) but groups seem to tend to make invitros instead of solid original demos.
Maybe everyone runs out of time, and groups that are asked to make an invit are just putting the required informations stuff in their working-in-progress demo, that would have no gimmick at all, else.

i agree with the most of you, but ...

invites like asm04 by moppi is informative and a great trip ...

then we have asm05 by conspiracy, its an extreme intro, i love it, but where is the party info, why should we come ?... but of course we all know what assembly is all about....

Still it should have told us alot about assembly, then it would be a perfect invite ...
