ojuice.net downtime

category: general [glöplog]
okay, since most of you've certainly been wondering what's up with ojuice.net here's a little information update i'm posting in my humble responsibilty towards my job as news-approver or ojuice: the domain names (.net and .org) expired.. that's all. the server is up an running. haven't been able to reach chandra yet, so if anybody has his phone number or whatever, just give him a call and tell him to already renew the domain registration ;-)

the other thing is, that i don't know whether the domains are still available after some time of being expired? anybody knows about such things?

beware of domain grabbers who register recently deleted domain names. i personally encountered a case last year when a .de domain a friend of mine hosted was not renewed. it took like 2 days if i remember correctly for 'Maya Mark Inc' residing in Las Vegas to reg the domain name and turn the site into a generic 'webdirectory' type of site. :o

btw: the name was indiefaustgerannt.de which means something like 'ran off in the faust(local club)'. since its bizare meaning, me and my friend agreed that the chances of somebody trying to register that exact domain name ~2 days after it expired are quite low, but whateva..

yeah domain name grabber suck a lot.. anyway, another whois query on ojuice.net showed me that the domain registration was renewed and does now run until may 2006. no further idea what's wrong with the site then..

Why not use another domain in the meantime? :)

nectarine's domains are also affected.
now they are, i guess the server's down now or something. nectarine has been working some hours ago, hasn't it?

Yes, streams up, web down.

You know, how things are on the weekend (:

It's just, well, this time it's the domains (:
doing like, 2 seconds of digging, the dns records have expired. the entries got removed from wherever is authoritative so you'll have to wait for them to propagate again, ie: 12 to 48 hours depending where in the world. ojuice.net got renewed on may 5th tho, so someone is slacking somewhere cause that should have been sorted by now. no worries about domain hijack, chandra has it reregistered.

doing like, 2 seconds of reading Unlock's post gave me the same information. And recalling this time last year - well, same thing. It just happens.
maybe publish ip meanwhile, so we could use ojuice, eh ? you can make tinyurl of it if you want :)

I'm not sure how dependent ojuice itself is on the name service, but I know Nectarine is pretty dependant upon it (db server is resolved by name, I think.) Which is why at the moment DJ Randomly is playing a song that has been deleted from the available/requestable songs - he picks from everything on disk when he can't find the DB. And that doesn't go into possible issues with cookie checking...

So, even if you were to get the ip, I'm not sure you'd get all that much out of it.
publishing the ip-address wouldn't actually help since there are multiple domains running on the server (at least ojuice and nectarine) using some concept of virtual server (that's what we use on our servers to host multiple domains, no idea what the name of this service is on windows).. well, let's wait and see. or maybe someone should knock at the doors of POLIRIS or whatever that colocator/registrar/whatever was called?

ok, didnt take that into account. pity :(
well if domain problem isn't solved soon, maybe someone will configure oj on other port, say 8080 or something, thus virtual domains problem can be solved if i get it correctly. that wont help nectarine according to sir garbagetruck tho.

hehe yeah but if «someone» could reconfigure ports and stuff, «someone» could also straightly fix the rest of the problems. unfortunately «someone» isn't available :)

Google had a downtime of 15 minutes last weekend. This caused a lot of irritation among the worldwide web community. If you rely on certain websites, you are vulnerable.

I hate it when I am unable to check my mail before I go to bed :p

If you rely on certain websites, you are a geek :D
I admit I was surprised that Google was down, then again I just opened Altavista - same thing :)

I have word from a certain Nectarine Coding Blog that Nectarine Coding is on hold while the Ojuice server is upgraded - which is being done to increase uptime.

So, cross fingers and do the w00ty dance.

(and Midget, I'm not a geek. Or a nerd. I'm a scener.)
