I got fed up with cds and dvds one day, and threw everything to the bin -including original software, gifts, movies etc.

if you literally threw them away, you are an idiot. I reckon you sold them or gave them away or something.

Well, yeah, I'd MUCH rather watch that movie on a monitor obstructed by someone's head, formatted for airplane screens and with major cuts. And with airplane sound, too.

?? How does this invalidate the annoyance of watching movies on a handheld and/or the merit of renting stuff?

Think about who sits next to you in that airplane :)

bah! real men watch their clownporn in public, no matter who they're sitting next to!
Kusma: I was talking about 3D power not CPU, sorry for misleading you.

Freeze: That's true Sony sues, ok. And the UMD thing... well ok sucks (not mentioning the memory stick).
For the rest...

For the divx/xvid matter well, PSP has mpeg4 which is not that bad. Anyways it is easy to send a dixv/xvid to the PSP. Just connect the USB cable, drag divx file, click copy, wait. And that's all. Maybe there is already a player available and I am not aware of :)

There are dozens of mp3/ogg players for the PSP, even wireless powered !!!1

Won't paste a list of all applications available but I think everything you shall want must be already available.

Emulators available: x86/PC, Amiga, Apple II, Atari 800, Atari 2600, Atari Lynx, Atari ST, Chip 8, Commodore64, Dreamcast VMU, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy/Gameboy Colour, GameGear, Genesis (Megadrive), MAME (Arcade), Master System, MSX, Neo Geo Pocket, Neo Geo CD, Nes, PC9801E, PC Engine, PSX/PSOne, Pyuta, ScummVM, Snes, Spectrum, Wonderswan.

And hey... it's *ALL FREE*. :)

evil: so, tell us more about the "3D power" of the GPX2... how do you get the "35x faster" when comparing the hw-accelleration of the PSP to the sw-rendering capabilities of the GPX2?
Freeze, yeah I forgot about the linux:
*** FUCK LINUX ***
*** LINUX SUCKS ***

It is weak and now wents COMMERCIAL.

But if the gp runs FreeBSD: respekt :)

(hint: where you get the divx you can get the same movie but .mp4 and PSP size ready :P)

Slummy:
the GP = 200 mips
the PSP = 283 mips

and btw guys dont get me wrong I like the GP platform :)
added on the 2005-10-06 13:26:28 by EviL EviL
evil: ah, I forgot that in portugal 283/200 = 35...
sorry 'bout that one..
btw, where did those mips-numbers come from?
ok ok ok
PSP CPU=1.41x faster comparing to GP
PSP GPU=35x faster comparing to GP
added on the 2005-10-06 13:31:32 by EviL EviL
the mips come from ATMEL/ARM/SGi technical data

and then we're back to "How do you compare the hw-rendrer against the GPs cpu?"
treu hehe :)

sure, you might get 35x the FILLRATE on a PSP than on a GPX2, but that doesn't mean you get 35x the overall performance. you see, the thing about GPUs is that they usually only handle graphics, not stuff like AI and physics.

Shifter: WHAT annoyance?

I mean, no, it's not as big as an Xbox. I'm sure you could hack a 17" flatscreen onto the back of an Xbox if you wanted to. And I think there's enough space in the case for a battery pack...

But then you have the problem of the Xbox or laptop not fitting in the seat because the person in front of you puts their seat down and goes to sleep; so you can't see the screen. (Which isn't wrong. It's what I do when I can sleep on a plane.)

There are places where a small unit with a good sized, visible screen (psp rules here, I mean it's pretty much ALL screen) provide serious advantages.

Alternately, you could buy a ticket in first or business class. But for the difference in price, and over the period of time of my life, going back and forth over the pond, I'll take the psp, gp32x, ds, gba, gp, and use the savings to go to a bunch more demoparties.

(and then probably use the remaining savings to buy a small island in the Pacific. Note: these are theoretical savings, not based on actually HAVING the money in the first place. I mean, theoretically, I didn't have to pay 15.2 million to developers today, so I saved enough to pay for demoparties for the next 50 years! Unfortunately, it seems this theoretical currency doesn't even buy me a cup of coffee. Straight coffee, drip; not a carmel machiatto or whatever the hell that crap is that Starbucks came up with. And now back to debugging.)

Shifter: WHAT annoyance?

The one Navis touched on? I'm not really sure that the huge derail about the demoscene's "favorite" console is neccesairy either. It's like me stating that I'd prefer sticking gizmondo carts up my ass -solely based on the principle that they're not as big as GBA carts.

..Now *my* head hurts :(

evil:

I like you and don't want to piss you off, but I think you did not get the point behind the philosophy of GamePark and the GP2x.

See, the PSP was done by Sony because they wanted to become the number one in the handheld market and kick Nintendo's balls. They invest billions of bucks in the worldwide market and development of graphical high-end videogames. They also pay a lot of licences to the movie biz to get movies on their UDM format. Sony did the PSP also for their own brand, to make Sony Computer Entertainment the brand with the best sold handheld of these days - and largest videogame entertainment machines manufactor.

They don't care about the demoscene. They don't care about homedevelopment. They're updating their BIOS to prevent such development. They sue people who are doing such programms with their passion and love to the thing they are doing. Most important to them is to sell as much units as possible as well as keeping the game ratio high for this system.

GamePark is a small South Korean company of people who want to bring something to the handheld market which they misses so much: Passion. Free decisions to their customers. While the GBA was resounded throughout the land and no PSP was in sight, the GP32 came out and had a better and larger display than the GBA, the better sound system, free devkit, SMC cards and so on.

GamePark cares about this scene. About the homedevelopment. About the demoscene. About the people who spend their time on a machine to realise what they want to create.

The GP2x features a free and official devkit. Out of the box connection to your PC with USB 2.0. SD Cards. Built-in programms to run JPEG, PNG, eBooks, OGG, MP3, DivX, XviD and all that stuff. GamePark updated the GP2x with 64 MB of RAM instead of 32, because the people wanted it! They give the power to the people.

That does the PSP as well, are right. But done by homedevelopers, which would be fucked by Sony right in the ass. GamePark supports what's happening on the GP2x and even help you as a very tiny developer team to release your games commercial.

To make it short:

The GP2x wasn't even released yet, and it has more pure demoscene spirit that the PSP won't have reached with fans, that Sony would fuck so bloody dead.
