[off topic][demoparties] Bill & Ted's excellent adventure

category: general [glöplog]
Hello world,

Ok, so I tried long and hard to post this up as a forum on demoparty.net... but have found out this is probably the apt spot.

What I need is travel advice, and lots of it.

That is, CTrix and I look to be making a trip over to Europe, for a crazy demoparty trek, around the August mark. We currently reside in the scene-anorexic Melbourne, Australia.... which means around 9458 miles from Helsinki.

So, as you can imagine, there is some planning that needs to be organised.. but mainly at the moment, what I am hoping to do is come up with a list of demoparties to head to. This is a little hard at the moment, because I believe that some of the parties we are interested in attending; have not officially launched their dates yet. (ie. checking demoparty.net as much as i can, but also having to kind of run on the list from 2005 parties, and hoping they fall about the same time).

We look to only be travelling for a month or so; and so here is a quick run down of what I'm hoping to do. Of course all of this is TBC and depends a little on finances:
---------
Definate parties: Assembly '06 (Aug 3-6, Finland), Evoke '06 (Aug. 11-13th, Germany), Beunzli 15 (Aug. 18th-20th, Switzerland).

Quite probable parties: Scene Event 2006 (July 27-30, Denmark).

Parties I would love to visit but have no dates/info for: Chaos Constructions, Stream Mega.
---------

No, i haven't forgotten about InerciaDemo. I would love to head to it, i'd be honoured.. but as it is scheduled later this year (last week of Sept), i don't know weather the finances will reach that far.

Sooooooooooooooooo:

I guess my specific questions: Anyone know weather Stream mega is happening again this year? Any ideas for set dates for Chaos Constructions yet? (Chaos Constructions, is one I have a particular soft spot for, as something in me dearly wants to visit Russia).

Anyone done a crazy demo tour in previous summers, over there? Any tips? Thoughts? Hangover cures?

Hmm,. how is it to be in Australia, so far away from the rest of the scene world? A big travel, good luck! I think there were several sceners and some party in Australia too at times?

gaiasword, ript & sh0ck from down there made a same kind of trip couple of years back, if they are still around you should ask them how they did.

i'd expect chaos constructions to be at the same time with evoke or buenzli, as it has been in previous years. trying to get there myself this year finally..

Gaiasword: I _am_ doing the big August trip this year, come hell or high water; and I'm in Helsinki so we can try to plan it all.
(the August trip is Scene Event, Assembly, Buenzli, and Evoke. Possibly also something in Spain, depending on how that goes, but I'm not missing Evoke so it should plan to be on the following week or something.)

Sh0ck showed up in #ukscene on ircnet a few nights ago; he's still alive. No one knows where Ript is.

I would also suggest hitting up Scene Event the week before Asm, if you can.

Also, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure rules. Just figure I'm Abraham Lincoln. Well, I'm more Ben Franklin, but, he wasn't in the flick.
You can be Big Jim Martin though. (Or was he only in the 2nd part?)

gaia: i've done a couple summer tours to demopartie. you mostly got the right parties sorted. perhaps lcp missing in there. i been meaning to go to cc aswell for quite a few years now.. their dates always suck for foreigners.. maybe this year they'll be abit better.

anyways: dst05 report
some other summer tour reports in some old pain issues.

if you pass by portugal all the same let us know, we can organize some special boozetuga event ^^ if not cya at evoke and bunzli :) only 2 that im planning to visit right now.

optimus: well - it is sort of awkward, because you get used to blank stares and 10-words-or-less explinations of what a demo is (I've recently found throwing in words like "animation art" and "coding" to be particularly not-effective... ) ...... um, it is kind of exciting, becuase it is nearly always a nocturnal art... and it is kind of eccentric, because you laugh at scenerjokes that nobody else gets (you can't walk past strawberries without a quick 'hete dans actie' impersonation).

um.. kind of odd question about parties... (excuse the pun), but do they sell out? (of tickets)? I mean, i'll certainly get my ASM ticket as soon as i can, but should i prebook my Evoke / Scene Event etc. ones... or just at the door?

Friom the ASM ticket FAQ:
Quote:
Q: Can I buy tickets at the party place?
A: Yes. Computer and entry tickets will be available at the party place. We will not run out of entry tickets.

I'd say this a pretty standard statement for any party - maybe they can TECHNICALLY run out of tickets as pieces of insignia, but then they'll just give you a piece of paper or something.

and even if they did run out, someone would get you a ticket anyway somehow. But you don't need to worry about that.

General rule of dealing with organizers: They're entirely reasonable people until you start getting unreasonable. When you get unreasonable, they have other shit to do for all the reasonable sceners.

So if you somehow ended up with the most fucked up thing ever, like you lost your head and are bleeding all over the place and your head is in Brussels but your body made it and it wants to have a good time, then you'd just find a scener friend to say to a non-busy organizer that you just need to be cauterized and then after that your body would like to just have fun and enter your demo entry, and your head will be along later. Whereupon the organizer will feel that this isn't any wierder than the requests that come from sceners who have heads, and help you find some people who you should be with, and you'll get cauterized and when your head arrives it'll get re-attached.

Where the FUCK did I just come up with that. I'm sorry, that didn't even make sense to me.

Don't worry about it so much, but do make preparations, and talk to folks. Find folks that are going for sure too, and arrange for rides from airports and meetings up and so on. Take advantage of the fact that you'll be in town to meet folks outside of the party too.
wow, big respect for your plan! hope you can make it true and enjoy a crazy european demo summer. see you in august in cologne! and watch out for the evoke announcements to apply for a long distance discount in time.

gaia: they dont usually sell out, you might want to preorder to get them cheaper though. but they usually let you pay at the door, and give a long distance discount. if they dont, ask for the main organizer and tell him some random official scene.org staff member says they should be giving you one couz you're from fucking australia. that usually helps, unless you're an arrogant prick and they're on an over busy organizational mental meltdown. :)
