Would you submit a production to a €100 Linux demo contest?

Broderick: .kkrieger final will come as soon as 3DRealms release their new revolutionary 3D graphics subsystem for the HURD that they developed for a certain game that's about to come out really soon now.

This has to be the most retarded idea ever.

shifter, those stickers lead back to the database entry at linuxdemos.org and therefore inform everyone that this demo runs on linux as well (and perhaps even on osx).

not raising awareness on the issue gives the impression nobody cares. while it might be retarded on the one hand, it is effective on the other. you're just not the target group.

i should add that the idea includes some serious investment of time, as it usually requires getting demos to run with wine, which might not always be trivial. at least it requires watching each demo to the end once.

Linux on Xbox! Linux on Xbox!
c'mon shifter, we can do it!
Paniq: provided that the correct driver is installed, most opengl based productions will run correctly with wine anyway, don't bother mentioning them all.

Also, involving money in an attempt to boost demos making on linux (or on any platform for that matter) doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Having descent gfx drivers would surely be much more beneficial to begin with.

the yeti, the trick is to combine some of the smaller ones with the even smaller logo. just like i did ;)

hitchhikr, that is simply not true. first of all, "most opengl based productions" is not "all opengl based productions", and that is more hurtful as it seems, as some of those productions that do not work at all are significantly more popular. e.g. mfx' deities crashes right at the beginning in 70% of all runs.

the bottom line is: a.) write demos directly for linux or b.) make demos at least compatible enough so they run well with the current emulation.

additionally, apart from the licensing issue, the linux gfx drivers from nvidia are decent and awesome (they perform even better than with windows), i cant say anything about the ati drivers tho.

finally you seem to believe that money can be freely moved around. do you think that if i handed my €100 to nvidia, they would spit out better drivers? this monetary amount is insignificant for any project. even the wine project will not spit out a better d3d9 emulation just because i gave them a hundred bucks.

one thing is not the alternative to the other. they are both important.

Why not centralize it in a database where people who are the audience can look it up, rather than shit up pouet with it?

I think it's retarded for the same reason as "XHTML 1.1 HOORAY" aqua buttons the size of manhattan.

Go make more music, you hippie :)

it is centralized in a database, and the stickers are a way of telling you that this database exists. you should really go out more(tm).

my life has a very simple motto that goes something like this: "why make music when you can piss off shifter?"

that explains a lot ;)

btw, when is a demo not 100% native? :)

100% naive.

Paniq: I love you :) But please make more music :)

But coming to explanations: Linux introduces a lot of uncertainties where "M$ USERS LOL" have certainties. Take for instance, ATI drivers support. And Dual screen support. Hell, that used to be easy before Linux ruined that shit.

Please send the blame to where it belongs, that being ATI ofcourse and not Linux :-)

Yes, it's totally ATI's fault that stubborn people had a raw deal converting me to a free desktop OS that "only" required me to buy a new graphics card for it to even function properly. And they wondered why I declined such a wonderful deal :D

And sorry, multimonitor setups being a chore is a common issue. It's the light of the morning whenever a Linux desktop at work decides to go apeshit again.

Blame the user, not the developer.

From my experience sceners only like Windows and Amiga OS, and if they could use Amiga OS they would. Probably because it's one of the easiest OSs to use ever made. But I don't really know about that.
