ZX Spectrum Pallete vs. Commodore 64 pallete

Saga Musix: This is about 16 colors? Not if you check the palettes on Foebane's pictures. I don't think he realizes how stupid he makes himself look with posts like that.

I know the Amstrad CPC has a palette of 27 colours, if that's what you mean. I'm talking about how, without any coding trickery, it can only display 16 at once in lo-res.

That C64 Commando title screen is more boring but also more pleasant to the eye than the overly-saturated ZX one. In this particular pic the C64 green fits good as it's army clothing :) That palette Sir posted is great.

I think this thread boils down to one question: Are lobster people better?

Depends on their saturation, apparently.

Serp: I don't think it was a Spectrum screenshot. ;) It looks like the same picture with a different palette.
The glorious ZX Spectrum version of the Commando loader screen is something like this:

Personal preference is of course a good reason to do anything. Question: do you also turn up saturation so high on modern systems?

Guys, you do realize that this thread is silly, right? Spectrum has fewer colours and it is harder to make colour ramps on Spectrum, not because luminosities are the same, but the opposite, because luminosities are too different. Spectrum designers worked in RGB, C64 designers worked in YUV, which is better suited for real images.

However, one can make great pixel art for any palette and people do, e.g.

All of these pictures have no multicolour tricks, no image flickering, this is just god-given 6912. I am sure, C64 guys can throw in fantastic examples of great pixel art even for the strangest of their videomodes. So, why argue?

@Yzi ahh.. yes didnt notice that :) Then it's just overly-saturated version of the pic. Why put it over the top like that i have no clue.

^^ Nice Spectrum pics, there are some great ones existing.

Isn't one of the two pictures posted by Foebane72 from C64 and the other from CPC?

It was an Amstrad CPC picture, didn't I say that already?

The Commando picture came from this page, together with multiple conversions from C64 to CPC, and I much prefer the latter: http://www.indieretronews.com/2016/02/is-c64-palette-far-superior-to-amstrad.htm l

It absolutely isn't.

I think I see an equivalent to the music industry there: "Louder is better" is equal to "more saturated is better"!

Then please, elaborate.

Yes, I prefer the first palette and not the second, even though they're similar. I didn't even see that picture further down that thread, I was responding to these screenshots from the OP of the thread:

And of how the graphics in the next screenshot looked with it:

And the screenshots you provided compare this palette with a PAL C64 palette, so it appears. Is the above palette a modified C64 palette? If so, it looks better.

It's a fine line with your palettes, Havoc, the difference is small but it tips it over the balance for me.

For example, the two blue colours in each palette, lower-centre: the first palette is a nice shade of blue, but the second palette is actually purple to me.

If those games (real or not) were used with Dawnbringer's 16 colour palette, then they're nice and pleasant to look at. They're not overpowering (although one poster in that thread thought so) and they're balanced. I just like that palette more, even more than the RGB ZX palette.

Whoops. Brain fart on my part. I forget I use the VICE pallette in VICE myself (it's called that). It makes the C64 more bearable in looks ;)

C64 pallete me beautifull? Just a simple ImageMagick convert -remap to the default palette from http://www.colodore.com

Bump! I think this is an important and hard topic that needs much more discussion. (Also someone should really make a thread about whether AY is better than SID.)

Once that has been discussed someone should make a thread about whether Atari is better than Amiga.
