preservation of old stuff that is not hosted at scene.org?

category: general [glöplog]

hello hello! this is another concerned citizen of scene world. i have started to notice that some productions that are hosted in own servers are now dead links, for example gba crack intros hosted in already dead gba-nfo. of course this is not problem to some of us, we all dont need this stuff, but sometimes in future, it would be nice for example to download some old bbs intro, but if link is dead, and you can't find it from mirrors, what you can do then? should there be somekinda open directory for all kind of "niche stuff", like "uploads" in bbs times, that allows us to preserve outside party released/found old stuff?

Even though it would be hard to moderate, it would be nive to have some sort of p2p file sharing network for demo related files.

nitro: p2p is useless for preservation, people tend to stop seeding files.

Well the idea is a program which is low on resources that indexes your demo stuff folder. It may not even be a regular p2p program, but something that connects to pouët and creates a list of the last people who were known to have a certain file, so you could contact that person in private and ask him/her to upload or mail the file.

a leechbot would be cool.

no, i'm definetely against using p2p techniques for preservation, it's too vague and relies on people too much. what is needed, is hostspace.

at scene.org we could achieve at least some preservation work besides the usual "demoparties" and "scenegroups" listings, like:

the bbs-doors and -tools archive

and

an archive of (demo)scene-related textfiles

we will work further on advantages to preserve demoscene heritage beyond demoparties - stay tuned.

a problem arisese, when the to-be-preserved material includes serious copyright infridgement. probably it would be an idea to organize webspace in some distant countries to host stuff like vintage warez - who knows...

scene.org (runnable) and archive.org (music) has enough space for everything we need. The problem is to get people to use it, both for old stuff and for some new stuff. Would it be a good idea to go as far as uploading every prod released on pouët to scene.org, if it's not hosted there already?

just upload it to scene.org

if its got copyright problems we'll put it offline (but keep it in our servers to serve it to the public once the copyright is void)

we been discussing implementing a p2p tracker to avoid copyright violation from scene.org side whilst contributing to upkeep the archive of stuff (beeing tracker). even though its something that wont come anytime soon, its beeing considered. in the mean time anyone else willing to implement such a venture (complete scene archive tracker/seeder) on their own p2p tracker system is willing to contact us scene.org for whatever needs they might have to create the complete archive tracking.
