"Hackers" sucks.

category: general [glöplog]
defbase: In my eyes, circumventing security measures in a network or similar, and breaking the copy protection are more or less two sides of the same story; they're both circumventing security. And my personal definition of a "hacker" is more "someone who solves a problem in a highly creative way", I should have added that to my previous post(s) ;) I guess that the definitions of hacking/cracking can cross over to some extent.

Either way, the main quarrel I have is with the "breaking into systems with malicious intentions" definition, since I feel that it defies the original meaning of the term. I really do think that someone needs to coin a new term for definition I'm in favor of though.

And also, just as a btw, I have nothing at all against people breaking into systems and circumventing copy protection, I *do* however, have a problem with the large herd of script-kiddiz defacing sites and spreading viruses. And the fact that those people get called "hackers" is what really pisses me off the most. :p

Yes, because they aren't. Just like HPAwhatever boards weren't.

np. orbital - halcyon & on & on

One of my favourite tracks ever
The OST has this version of Halcyon on it. As far as i'm aware it's the only record that has this version on it. If anyone knows any different please feel free to let me know.

"Hackers" definitely does not suck - if you're talking about the book by Steven Levy, that is. The movie was just a quick something they put together to cash on the cool-factor of computers.

Orb, almost any live recording of Orbital from their 2000 tour will have it. I know when I saw them in San Francisco they played it... Course it's not as good as 'Satan' (:

Personally, my favorite track is from Hackers 2 - Music Inspired by the Motion Picture ... The Orb, Toxygene. But then I always have preferred the Orb over Orbital.
Pfft, the best orbital tracks are Otoõno and The Box (part II) :p

T, hpa boards weren't? Come on, I know you're old enough to know different.

I think some people are missing my point. Definitions of words change over time. The mass-media definition of hacker is the one where people break into systems, not create smart linux patches. Just because something was "just so" 50 years ago at MIT doesn't mean it's relevant today.

Ask anyone on the street what a hacker is, they'll say "someone who breaks into computers". Ask them what they'd call someone who writes very smart open source and they'll say "programmer".

Like I said, it's all labels just to be cool.

Def Base: Please, you know damn well those boards were straight up lamers trying to gain attention. The ones that had clue didn't advertise.

Just like you're saying the Linux people with clue don't go around saying they're hackers. They ARE, they don't put a big flag out saying "Look at me! Look at me!"

In order to accomplish that and maintain any respect, you'd better be a DAMN GOOD clown.
