best tech demos ?

category: general [glöplog]
you know those demos paid by manufacturers like ATi or nvidia to show off their brandnew vidcard lines... which would get negative spam if ever posted on pouet :D

anyway i haven't seen the DX10 ones yet except on videos but the later one that really got me is Luna :

a kinda pseudo-spiritual post-cyber thingummy... who said matrix-like ? :D

but with a great ambiance and direction that's for sure :)

not like those boring teen-oriented ATi Ruby demos...

harder to see differences between 4x and 16x FSAA, imho. Maybe in motion.

the front of the balloon is less abrupt, and the bottom is *a bit* less aliased, is that all ?

CG coders or graphists advice PLS ?

I always found nvidia demos better than ATIs, but ATI does have Kb_ bitch !

Silkut: Well, it's not that hard to see the differences. The 16x FSAA has an aliased Falanx logo ... how ironic for an FSAA demo :)

lol p01, logo apart i mean. Sure it's not from the original rendered pix.

the swastikas are missing on all 3!
I always found Nvidia's demos terribly ugly, and simple; like the one Zest mentions. I think Nvidia should spend a bit of money hiring some people to direct their tech demos, it's like they are all done by the driver coders or something.

yes iq, someone like the one who coded the boring ruby chick jumping from a platform..whoah, action & boobs.

actually, ryan geiss used to work on nvidia demos, but searching for his website i just found out he left
silkut: ruby is ati :P
Silkut, I was speaking about nvidia, not ATI (and remember it was nvidia that first introduced the CG tits as commercial strategy with the fairy and Nalu).

I don't say ATI's demos are what I would like to see. However Rubi's demos, whatever they show tit's+explosions or not, have more "direction" than the Nvidia's pirate ship, the DX10 frog or the fashion show woman, come on. Again, I don't say that's what I like, but I see more effort behind it. Then of course you also have Toy Shop demo, that is the most boring thing you can watch in your life.

If the scene had more demos that looked this good:

Seriously, too few people nowadays concentrate on making shiny things look good, they just slap an envmap on it and call it done. Last time I saw anything come even close was Final Audition, and as far as I can tell, those were just the Debevec HDRIs. WRITE MORE COOL SHADERS! LESS GLOW, MORE SHINE! Really. There are some amazing coders here who could do so much more with a bit of feedback from the artists.
Sorry, I'm rambling.

@maali: never told it was nvidia, you read too fast. But I agree, swastikas are missing on the ballons.

@iq: but this is not demo. This is tech demo. And i'm speaking about ATI since it's the primary nvidia concurrent.

noouch: BB Image maybe not as glowing as the gargoyle+clock, but technically speaking this came pretty close :)

Maali: Thanks, nearly forgot about that one. I remember being impressed by how much it looked like a commercial demo (and by the dynamic mesh destruction of course).

ATI's Pipe Dream. Too bad music is not realtime, that would have been cool :)

btw has any famous demo group been approached by nvidia or ati in the past to make mindblowing tech demos ?

i guess the latest intel 30s contest was kinda such a rapprochement :>
