pouët.net

What do you want a new Scene.org to be like?

isn't there the danger, that pouet.net will be reduced to the "Random image thread"?

Some of us call that a prospect.

you know what, i wish there was a place just for people who _actually make demos_ to discuss stuff like _how they actually make demos_ or _what they think of a demo given their knowledgeable and worthwhile opinion_. without all the sub-youtube idiots who never made anything in their lives but somehow feel like everyone really cares what they have to think destroying it, regurgitating shit they read on a blog, spamming images and so on. a pouet for elites, basically. where you have to have actually made some good things to get posting rights.

because thats what i really hate about pouet. the fact that it's full of fuckwits who wandered in off googlevideo, but it's pretty much also the only place where you find a lot of the interesting people i want to hear from who are making good demos at the moment - so i have to keep reading it "just in case".
its like, sometimes - 1 in 50 maybe - you get a bbs thread that is interesting. like that 4k mesh compression thread a while back - you got some people who know what they are talking about discussing 4k mesh compression, something which i found interesting and lead me to do further research. there's not really any other forum or site in the scene where such discussions occur.
its the same with prod comments. i have to read the comments on at least my own prods, because sometimes you get a meaningful one by someone whos opinion you consider worthwhile because you know they know what they are talking about. you have to read all the comments because you dont want to miss the small number of interesting ones.

there's nothing wrong with pouet as the youtube of the demoscene, a free-for-all - but i'd really like a place for actual demo makers to talk about the demos they made or are making. know what i mean? rather than mixing it all in together. somewhere one can go and read where you dont need to apply such a massive manual bullshit filter as you do on pouet.

there, i've said it. you may feel free to call me an elitist wanker. it's a pipedream. it'll never happen anyway.

i agree totally with what smash said, these youtube idiots have no clue and no respect for demomakers anymore and anyone can post total horseshit on the bbs, i cringe every time I venture over to pouet because of the total cockpiss I have to trawl through to get anything worthwhile to look at.

Hence my ranting against Zest yesterday. I totally agree and grew pissed with that over the years.

Just ignore those people and let ps do his moderation job. Imo, the BBS is slowly becoming a much more interesting place (except for people like unseen or stefan who of course miss the trolls) since those recent bans.

Smash, you're of the guys who must show the example by posting interesting demoscene stuff on the BBS, along with Iq, Kb, Ryg, Navis, etc... Others will follow and I will be the first to be interested in it, you can count on it.

There is no reason why this place can't host interesting discussions, unless you guys keep repeating "a serious discussion on Pouet ? Are you kidding ?"

Well no, I'm not kidding, let's try some, ps gave us a good opportunity there.

Trolls will eventually move to this "new magical place where we talk about real demoscene stuff" so let's not waste time and let's do it here, we don't need yet another website.

To be honest, I'd prefer a more feature-rich (and proven) BB-solution (like phpBB) if I were to discuss "serious" stuff. The pouët BBS (and the scene.org forum for that sake) is too limited in it's usage IMO; no tracking of read posts, no editing etc. And Bitfellas has kind of a completely different audience. The difficult part I guess, would be to get the users to actually use another forum... it's been tried before without big success.

well that was my hope - that by moderators controlling who can post there it never gets as messed up.
remember, i wasnt saying pouet shouldnt be how it is. nothing wrong with the funny shit and so on sometimes. -just that there should be a more serious alternative for those that want it. :)
you might be right tho, maybe it can change naturally.

Pouet is the demon, and it's so good.
Scene.org should be the god, where all serious discussions would occur peacefuly.

I haven't read the whole thread so maybe somebody already suggested that idea but what about having an additional small BBS called something like "the technical forums" ?

People would have access to it by default but as soon as they start posting random pics or stuff like that in it, they would lose the access (but they could still go to the main old BBS, playing the attentionwhores with pictures and retarded links).

We would then have an interesting BBS area on Pouet and at the same time the usual BBS for stuff that is more fun oriented. It's a win-win :)

keops: yep, that could solve it. could be you only get access if you ask for it. :)

pouetv2 will have some of that, dont worry :)

considering that pouet is still at version 0.9.901 7 years after it was launced, I'd say v2 is quite a long time away!

What smash said (and keops too), but not only for technical stuff. Discussions on design/gfx/music/concepts/etc. should be there.

* goes back to not making demos... *

keops: visuals have always been one of the main scene expression means, why should they not appear on pouet bbs ? they aren't allowed in meaningless web2.0 sites. Scene words except credits (scrollers and scene poetry <3) have usually been despised :p

of course are coders the scene gods, but we usually tend to restrict the scene to the horizons of our own interests, whereas she's vast and involves many talents : in my own pantheon scene gods are also graphicians, musicians and... crackers :p

you can't fight intarweb memes, they are part of current geekpop culture, how many movies and videogames references appeared in early demoscene when they were the mainstream geekpop culture ?

zest: I think you're confusing graphics in demos with random pictures of the web in a discussion there..

Zest: are you a total moron or are you just pretending ?

Spamming our discussions with your irrelevant pictures has nothing to do with demoscene visuals or being graphician. It's called plain annoyance whereas we are trying to have discussions on the BBS.

Reread Smash's post to make sure you know what WE are talking about and what category you belong to.

Visit 4chan, people will probably call you a graphician over there.

keops: you seem to miss the fundamental concept of public board, forum, agora and such... pouet is not a series of corporate meetings with chairmen. Different views can emerge, even the less useful ones. That's demo-cracy. We tend to call people who think different from us parasites or trolls.

besides pouet is about a hobby, hence should be fun :p

see, if we had a leet bbs we'd already have saved ourselves zest's posts, i'd call that a win. ;)

see, it's like this.
when you're watching a football match on tv, you dont listen to commentary by some lardass guy off the street who watches football in the pub. you listen to commentary by a bunch of former or current footballers and managers. you might like the guy on the street, he might have a mean line in photoshopped pictures of cats, but when it comes to football you just dont give a damn about what he thinks. you even wouldnt mind hearing from someone who played rugby professionally, because they at least have some useful input about sport in general - but the guy on the street? his opinion isnt worth any more than any of the other millions of people on the street.
and when you want to talk about building a new skyscraper, you don't want to talk to a guy you met down the pub who's seen a skyscraper before, owns a hammer, and put up some shelves once. you want to talk to someone who's actually designed and built a successful and currently-standing skyscraper. you might like the guy you met down the pub, he might have some great pics of two horses fucking and you might find him very amusing on a dull friday afternoon at the bar, and maybe he has some clever and original ideas about getting all the best architects and engineers in the world together and making a pizza hut that stands on stilts 40 feet above the ground and leans at 70 degrees - but when it comes to discussing how you're actually going to practically lay out the foundations for your next skyscraper, you just honestly do not give a shit about what he thinks, because his opinion isn't based in any worthwhile experience.

and when it comes to you making your next demo, or discussing your last one - well, you get where i'm going here. sadly, the trolls of the internet do not. :)

scene is super fun and nice hobby i agree with you. but when you start to talk about serious subject and there is pictures of kittens and gay men sucking each other penises its not nice. it's like everyone can be terrorist and they will be if they have change. like if you had change to sneak hidden images at tv streams and wouldn't get caught, you would do it? right? it's almost impossible to have nice conversation about anything until it becomes pouetized...
