Java tutorial for elementary school students

After GOTO you must write the name of the labels as the parameter as it’s of course possible to use more
than one label in a program. If there are several labels, all the labels must have different names! (I know
from experience that many things which are self-evident for me nowadays are quite hard to understand for
beginners. That’s why I rather explain things more detailed than necessary than get mailed a load of
questions.)

"computers are object oriented"

This is close to the stupidest statement I've ever seen on this site.

I know, you'd think I was somehow kidding in an effort to wind up Adok. But that would imply that I thought Java tutorials for elementary school kids was somehow a bad idea, and that would be way too consistent with the other things I've said in this thread, so i think we can safely diusregard that interpretation. After all, it's not like I was raised on BASIC myself or anything.

Zest: sure Lego Mindstorm could be a fun approach.

I don't think the little programming we had to do before playing at the Computer club when I was 6-10 was hard, even for kids. And the lack of maths. knowledge was only an issue for the 1 or 2 who wanted to do more. The guy in charge explained me the very basics of sinus and cosinus when I was ~8yo. I managed to do a lot with that little knowledge. The maths. knowledge, or lack thereof, really became a problem for me around 12-16 when I wanted to do 3D stuffs.

The point of getting kids to program, is to show them what is possible in the easiest way possible (that'll be no tech talk), to be a motivator which can evolve throughout life.

Somebody write a tutorial on how kids work for adok. He's obviously failed to grasp the basics.

ok, ok you won :) but that was a not a tutorial, and was not intended for teaching, just as an eye-opener and/or advertisement. Now go back and write an article for scene.hu yourself :)

An article about Haskell would be interesting!

Ugg, PDF really pisses me off when even simple stuff that can be done with a plain text doc is uploaded in that shit.

Adok: let's leave pedagogics to those who know smth about it... besides, I agree with Preacher :D The effort is nice, but there's just things you should know better before attempting to teach them.

poi: LEGO Mindstorm is somehow the new LOGO (which was first used to move a turle-ish robot, then came the mighty triangle). And about the math, i learnt trigonometry and matrices on demoscene tutorials before getting a decent introduction :D Tutorials are one of the lacking areas today /me thinks.

<oldManVoice> in my time there was no internet, and my parents would not let me log in on BBSs abroad :p </oldManVoice>

I also learned much more from dealing with programming than at school. With the tutorial I don't want to teach the children math, but programming. Math is not so difficult that you could not teach yourself. In the example programs there is a bit of math. It is only the first version. From the feedback I learn what else should be added to the tutorial.

Seriously, yours is just a bad attempt to fuck up with children's mind. That's what you should learn with the feedback you've received so far.

rmeht: This tutorial was written based on my experiences as a child. I'm taking you seriously. I'd be interested in what should be different so that it matches the child's mind.

taking in mind that 99,999999999999% of the children aint YOU
Maali: That's why I want to get lots of feedback so that I can implement the improvement ideas in the next version.

But you don't listen to feedback, only refuse to understand it.

lol. Now the question is, should I point out some not so difficult and perfectly ordinary math, and ask you to teach it yourself, so that afterwards you can write a tutorial, maybe even I could have the chance to understand it with the help of your tutorial? (at least, poor 2nd graders would be free during the process...)

Adok, now, what kind of skills did you have in your elementary school age?

He proofed the Riemann hypothesis, but a spiteful schoolmate of him burnt his exercise book :(
