NVision 08

category: general [glöplog]
That's a possible view, but even then the combined effort of the outreach tour has already helped the scene a lot. For Breakpoint, Nvidia is doing the right thing - not only do they support us with heaps of money (=MUCH improved competition prizes, gigantic bigscreen everyone will love, lower entrance fees), they also are actually trying to improve the life of demo coders (development support etc). It's much better for us to have sponsors that actually believe in what we do, and don't limit us in any way in regards of our creativity.

Given that, I have to admit I don't care much about the motivation behind the guys who did the outreach tour, I've got to applaud their efforts.

Of course you need to remember that flaming and whining on the Internet is much more fun, useful and productive than actually doing something..

hey, I don't really want to judge that comment, companies may take interest in sceners and might as well offer them jobs eventually.. personally I think that Scamp and all the other BP organizers do a pretty good job.. I might even hint them to ask e.g. TI to promote their stuff there (I'm not working for them but they engineer some pretty good embedded DSP boards ;) fun to do demos on that sort of hardware)

Actually, gloom's quest for glory via demoscene outreach

Well, it's made him into a hero for -me-. I get to go to _TWO WHOLE PARTIES_ this year, and one of them will have more than a dozen sceners at it!

hermes, but yeh.. i assume it's THAT part where ppl like e.g. Stefan somewhat point to the fact that it's quite often the same ppl doing this lobbying and that it's rather easy to assume they do it for a personal agenda as well.
isn't there a contradiction betwee the same people doing the lobbying at several companies and personal agenda? (unless you want 5 jobs at the same time.)

What about the entrance fee anyhow? on nvidia's GDC booth, they only gave a "sponsor's guide" to how companies can "give money". minimal was around $15,000...

oh, there was also that "free pizza" thing which was "costs of all food expenses".

Any more info? I can't wait for august :D

I think it's amazing that we're all part of a sub-culture where it's prefectly accepted (or rather; the norm) to write your name in big letters (with hypnoglow, if possible), brag shamlessly about your skills, flame all other groups and generally just be as loud-mouthed and self-promoting as possible.

..but GOD FORBID you try to do something real for that sub-culture. Oh no, that must mean that you are DOING IT FOR YOUR OWN FAME AND GLORY!!!111oneoneone

*sigh*

LiraNuna: More info is coming pretty soon -- also with regards to the entrance fee. :)

garg: well.. you already have two.. why not three more? :D anyway, personally i dont give a rat's ass about it.. tho, grabbing a snickers from the Pixar canteen in San Fran would be nice one day :D
gloom: leave it. Some people will always have sticks in their asses, and basically looking for conspiracy theory is the only thing they can do. You need to learn how to live with that :). Anyways I'm looking forward for this event. Every possibility to watch another demoscene production is good. We will judge later if it was worth a try.

People tend to like to bash commercial things just because it's trendy to do so.
