while i was reading the new pain i noticed the charts section featured something i JUST DONT GET. there is this category called 3d-artist, you know, the guys who do most of the stuff that you can see in todays demos.

3d addict placed 1st.

what the heck? do people even notice that he did his last demo some ~5 years ago and that there are really great 3d-men in the scene (who didn't make it to the pain top10)? do you know spark? do you know
fiver2 aka the united states of america? do you read credits in demos?

p.s. yes i do think 3d addict WAS one of the best 3d-artists. dont get me wrong

Which makes me wonder what the hell am i doing on the 3d-artist charts... Since i've never modelled that much stuff for demos (a few crappy objects here and there) and only do still images with povray...

Well, your votes get saved. Unless you review them every time thoroughly before pushing that submit button such things might exist... People actually are lazier than you'd thought. :)

It's just that I usually don't know who are the best active modelers, graphicians, musicians or anything today and don't know what to vote (Although if I voted, I think I left the 3d-artists blank). Many people also don't know many things and just view previous charts, and vote the most famous from there. Which are my favorite demos and groups is easier to know, but it's harder to know about individual people and usually I find myself to spend hard moments to fill the blanks about graphicians, musicians, etc..

It's just that when i have to vote, it takes a lot of time to remember which gfx/modeling/etc, I liked from what demo and where the heck do I have this on my HD, or have to view the nfo file on pouet in order to decide which people to vote. Just that a more right voting needs too much time or you have to remember many people, something that few people can do. And so, they vote the few things they know, the most famous names and stuff. I don't justify us, but I am just explaining the hard and subjective situation that always existed with voting..

Also, it usually happens that graphicians remember mostly other graphician names when they wish to vote (since they are interested in that and view graphic compos from parties), musicians remember other musicians, I remember mostly coders of favorite demos and so on. Depends on the interest of everyone and how much he spends on the demoscene. Even for me who watches many demo, is very hard to know objectively who are the people that deserve to stay in the top10 gfx, music, etc. Sometimes, instead of voting the same people, I just try to vote alternative ones from a new demo or friends ;)

Very few people can spend an important amount of time to fill votecharts and I am not in them. I use to be able to fill easilly demo/groups/coders charts but not the rest. I am also wondering about what some inactive/old sceners/prods/groups are doing in these categories and why I always view the same of them in the charts. Same thing in here. Sometimes charts become boring this way, neither new good prods/groups are doing it inside nor the old famous ones are changing. Sometimes I loved charts very much (but still love to fill them) but now they are so common, boring and subjective. It was always like this actually..

voting for inactive and retired people is lame
voting for friends or for a name just because you just remember it, is lame too...

fill the Pain chart takes me 4 hours in 3 weeks

how can you fill a chart sheet properly ?
- look some demos-intros, use pouet to choose if you've not the time to see all of them
- look NFO of the demos you love, use pouet it's easy
- listen Nectarine for hours and note your prefered musician
- look the galleries and the news on gfxzone.org for the graphicians

charts can motivate newbies to become better, and they will give us new and better prods.
zone, i wish everybody would take it so serious as you. respect !

but i don't think voting for old people is wrong, if their art is considered legendary and rarely someone did better up to now. in case of the WC ascii charts for example, every time 70% of my votes go to old artists like h2o or rotox, because they're simply unreached till now. and it's a nice way to show people respect they deserve.

but in the main, you're right. never forget the fresh blood while voting ! it motivates people.

Actually I'd like to add that 3D Addict is a good modeller AND raytracer. Most other people on the charts only to either raytracing or modelling for demos, these two obviously requiring totally different skills.

well, gargaj is right imho... it's easy to model certain geometry. for instance, abstract haujobb content is just some boxmodelling and then meshsmooth it... some simple box texturemapping+tiled texture can texturize it decently.

Yet, for goodlooking 3d scenes, you really should unwrap UV coordinates and draw a decent texture
and stuff...

And i have to say that 3D Addict is damn good at that point =D

no one does... but that's the same with other productions in the scene... lotsa demos these days are quick partyproductions and most music, graphics and 3D are done on the fly, the culture changed.

In the early days sceners spend months and months on their demos (iirc FC did 5 months on 2ndreal) just because they wanted quality in their production

these days people just work like: hey we have some effects here, we have an engine there... hey gimme some graphics, textures and some music and i can make a demo out of this in a few days time

as i've said the culture changed, i dont know what caused it and i dont know why...
I am talking about "who spends the time to fill charts today?" but you opened another subject I was wondering lately..

I found impressive that Squish was one man's production of 1 year of work. Also, there are some other demos, even good ones that I like, where their creators state that the demo was done in 2 weeks or in the partyplace for example. Are they lying? Do they mean that they had done the effects months before and it is just the connection that takes 2 weeks? I am impressed by big works, carefully created demos, without deadlines or anything, sharing big ammounts of time for working and taking care of every little detail. But who can do that today? (Don't ask me ;)
