What's the exactly name of the Scene if we want to call it a movement?

category: general [glöplog]
Amitari: word

Daniel Somma: Just for you. Call it a wild growing flower near the Autobahn.

Computism, maybe?

However, I think ps was spot on.
call it every night for three weeks and see if you're still talking by the end

if you are, you can call it whatever the hell you want

I know I shouldn't bite, but..

there was a time we didn't need "definitions" for the scene, or shiny logos and big prizes and shitty outreach.

Why is outreach shitty? I mean; outreach is just showing demos to more people - what is wrong with that? Don't you want more sceners, just like yourself?

you just found the scene, as result of your natural inclinations and life path, in a eureka moment and instantly knew what it was and its meaning.

No, you didn't. You had a friend who was into it, or a neighbour who showed you a demo one time you were at his house to copy a game, or you stumbled upon a cracktro that you liked and tried to find more like it. There wasn't any magical mystical about it, you just happend to be a person who enjoyed demos, but you still needed to be exposed to demos to know this. Henche; shitty outreach.

The problem with defining the 'scene' is that it's different thing for different folks.

There is no scene.

Someone wrote a very good article on this on some hugi, explaining what a "demo" is for different folks. Is it just "tricks for kicks", showing off coding skills, real-time music videos, or something deeper? Probably all of the above, but not necessarily for the same person.

In the same way, there are folks who are into the "scene" for different reasons. For some, the real party IS outside. For others, it's a state of mind. The scene has not been codified, and my idea of the scene is just as good as anyone elses'.

smash: Don't you mean it's a "god damned arms race"? ;)

For say it real, I've discovered the demos by his music.
First I've listened the music modules and one day, just for case, I've watched a demo by mounting an ADF image of an amiga demo (I was changing that for a musicdisk, and I've discovered that was the demo with the same song I've listened before)

SO I've discovered the scene ALONE because there are NO friends in my neighbourhood that knows them.

I'm amazed you actually managed to miss my point. Again. :) However; yes, modules were also a part of demoscene recruitment, so how can you be against showing demos to people when you yourself came to the scene through that path of discovery?

I'm guessing you're one of those people who doesn't know what outreach really means. Allow me:
Quote:
Outreach is an effort by individuals in an organization or group to connect its ideas or practices to the efforts of other organizations, groups, specific audiences or the general public. Unlike marketing, outreach does not inherently revolve around a product or strategies to increase market share. Typically non-profits, civic groups, and churches engage in outreach.

Outreach often takes on an educational component (i.e., the dissemination of ideas), but it is increasingly common for organizations to conceive of their outreach strategy as a two-way street in which outreach is framed as engagement rather than solely dissemination or education.

gloom, i must admit that i did kind of quite actively find the scene. strong urge to make computer music in the nineties means trackers, trackers mean demoparties. also consciously chose to keep doing demostuff after the trackerscene stopped showing up at demoparties (and died). i'm sure a similar story holds for many. i really do believe that some attraction to "creative yet geeky" made me find the scene.
