Here is now

May I remind you that besides a number of big festivals that garner the most (still relatively little) media and related-industry attention the demoscene is and always has been organizing small parties enjoyed by many for different qualities than huge screens, big prizes, theme decoration and what have you. Dismissing this in the way you did by "throwing an idea" is utterly and completely stupid. You may not be a fan of the small parties or simply have not attended many or any, but please don't dismiss people's rights to appreciate them in favor of "that big magical thing" that appears to be BP.

Wow, people have big feelings for small parties - big surprise. Or rather, not really...

What I simply claim is that Breakpoint has a bigger effect on the scene (simply by being the biggest scene-only party out there) than those smaller parties - so cancelling BP would have a bigger effect on the scene than cancelling a smaller party. Don't get me wrong - those small parties are important, too, and I love going to small parties, but I honestly fear for the future (despite how bleak it might look, anyway) of the scene, if BP was to be cancelled just once - I fear the orgas won't be motivated to pick it up the following year, and then we would have lost something quite valuable. Which is just a shame.
I'm sure the scene will survive without BP, but what will it look like?

you know what it is... the dutch have always supported danish parties, the danish* will never give us anything but words in return. sad but true...

Not entirely true - although it was a fuck-small Belgian party, an IRIS-delegation of Adonis, Darkhawk and me actually went to BSE in '98. It was nice, but sadly nothing compared to small danish events (sorry, Franky), or those Polish events (Gravity was cool!) - but the trip there was half the party, so we were happy.

I feel like I have to apologize to the dutch - I really didn't mean to offend your party. Believe me! I'm sure Outline is really great and I actually DO realise the value of small parties. I just think that BP has an even bigger value and I'm happy it will survive this year.

(IRIS doesn't count, they just sit around and complain about things)

Yes, it's true.
We invite (talented) people to join us in our criticism - once you feel like you're part of the choir that is IRIS, we will force you to make productions - after resisting for a while, you will be kicked.
you just shouldnt have kicked out half your "friends" out of IRIS, saves you the hassle of recruiting new ones, sonnyboy

anyway, come to outline, you will find plenty of talent there!
Funny how people think they know exactly what happened when we decided to kick many inactive people from IRIS - let's hear the stories, but perhaps in a dedicated thread, mmmkay?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that there was no problem with the survival of Breakpoint, the issue rather being how much money they have to spend over and above the basic bread and butter party?

it was a (...) Belgian party

listen up, you funny swedish troll... :) all the parties in oslo, helsinki, or some other outskirt of that geyser-infested penniless island nation of yours that i ever visited were nice, but not really anything like a true dutch party, or even like a french event, like for example the comédie de la pétanque- but the trip there was half the party, so we still managed to kindof enjoy ourselves, a little teeny weeny bit! :)

I read that as gayer-infested penniless island
considering their way of hugging, that interpretation could stand!
yeti: "here" is somewhere else than where it was when i wrote that message, i guess :)

Oh no, don't stop! It makes all the difference whether I am coming or not!
Oh you'll be coming alright at Outline <wink>
Oh dear. that sounded ever so slightly wrong lol
Rob. I am giving it serious concideration. I looked at the images, and it looks exactly like the kind of party I always loved. Not that it would make all the difference in the decision, but it would be nice to have someone to travel with.

History tells us that big demoparties evolved out of smaller gatherings. It is safe to say that without the smaller parties that paved the way years ago, it would be impossible nowadays to organise bigger events. So how on earth would one argue that the value of smaller parties is less than that of a big one?

It is absolutely mind boggling. Nutman, you're at least a scener since 1999 (I did a whois on your website) so you should be well aware of your own history.
This implies that you know the scene is as elastic as ever and cancelling BP will just signal a change, instead of an end to the scene.

Besides, it is impossible for a demoparty to be the biggest if their are no smaller parties to make up in the equation.

Yep, you're right. BP is safe, but in which state? I fear if the orgas have to fight each and every year in order to be able to fund the party, we will have no BP in a year or two. The orgas don't want BP to be the basic B'n'B party - there's enough of those around. I think it's good for the scene to have this one, rather big party - of course some other party will be handed that title if BP should disappear, but it's going downhill too fast now, I think.

??? So, trying explain myself has become frowned upon now, hmmm?

Oh, and Numtek, I think you're absolutely right - in the sense that the bigger parties DID evolve from smaller ones and NO - I'm NOT saying that the scene would be better off without Outline or what else you read from my initial thread. I'm just saying that I think BP has a bigger impact on the scene - thus, it would mean more to the scene in general to save BP than to save a smaller party.

But maybe my reaction is just a sign of me getting older. I like things the way they are and change is not my favourite. But hell, fuck it - let's see what they can do about BP, and if they fail, I'll go visit Outline as the first dane ever - so someone better buy me a beer.

Oh, and it's since 1995, mind you. ;)
