What's this technique?

the sierpinski gasket and cube bits. It almost looks like you can see a little more then 360 degrees and z spans from blue to brown, but then it's wavy. The cubes at the beginning looks like it might be some sort of texture technique. Any ideas on how this was done?

i guess it's raymarching - the "texture technique" is simple artifacts.

i have an excel document around here somewhere kinda like what i'm talking about. it shows the name of the techniques and has links to examples of them.
