What about something like "CGTalk FXWARS" for sceners?

category: code [glöplog]
Huh? Why are you now suggesting sending audio off to it's own little niche site? :D

naming convention, i suppose? :)

Apart from the whole audio thing which I hereby second it would actually be pretty nice if there was a "resources" section with links to graphics programming related conference videos and first of all papers. But all in due time I guess :)

No scene.org login?

kb: duly noted and added to the to-do.

xernobyl: not right now, no. There were some logistical issues in the last minute so we decided to remove that support for now.

Gloom: I understand your concern about the name leading to some confusion if there was to be an audio-section of the site.

Also, I'm very well aware of other site's massive libraries of synth/audio related articles.
I'm sure the best first move shouldn't be to try and top those or in any way compete with them, but instead approach ie. SoundOnSound to find out if they would allow for a selection of articles to be presented at DH.

On editing the entire audio-part of DH: I must say it sounds like quite a huge task for a single person, but I'd be honored to edit a section on softsynths. Actually, I'm really not that much into all those home-studio things going on, so to put me behind the pen on articles on those wouldn't lead to anything new or interesting at all ;)

A single topic wouldn't quite make it as a "section" and would probably just be totally misplaced and out of context.

So to sum it up - my idea wasn't that well thought through, and I must agree with Gargaj and Ferris on the one-step-at-a-time-approach.

In case there are any potential contributors lurking here or on the site thinking "Yeah, I might want to contribute, but is it worth my time?", allow me to share the first 24h webstats with you guys:

- 8.000 unique visitors
- 29.000 page views

I'd say that's pretty good motivation for contributing. :) Right now we're still looking for people to become authors on the site. What this practically entails is that you will dedicate some time each month to writing posts or contributing content (to be edited by an editor into a post). It also means you get put on our internal "authors" mailing-list, to discuss topics and such.

I hope you'll consider joining up. :) If committing to writing is too much, then I hope you'll at least consider participating in the discussions in the forum-section.

If you have some pretty bad english-writing skills like me (you know I am from le france) it will be possible to be corrected?

Count me in - in case you give me something to login! I wont create one of those non SceneID accounts. :D

las: http://sceneid.net

(yes, it's not NIH syndrom compatible but it works \o/)

rez: yes, all articles are looked over by an editor before they are published.

las: as of now, we won't allow SceneID directly for the reasons described above, but if you trust your credentials to the 3rd party SceneID<-->OpenID bridge that Gasman set up, then you can use that.

For all people who want to contribute with articles or material, register at the site and then use the contact-form to send in your username so the account can be upgraded to "Author"-status.

A bit of feedback: Generally I love the quality of the site and the direction you're going. Really good job, congrats on being awesome. I hope to be good enough to have something to contribute eventually.

1) This page doesn't really work: http://www.displayhack.org/forums/ It would be a start if each forum was on its own line. But I think the issue is more fundamental -- the interface doesn't draw people into the forums!
(Also, what are the numbers in parenthesis? (Probably topics/posts, but I had to spend waaay to long to figure that out.))

2) It seems you're aiming to present really high-quality content that can remain relevant for years, maybe decades. IMO there are number of problems with the commenting system. Easiest to fix is probably that it doesn't really *visually* scale to hundreds of comments and subdiscussions over many years. The other problem is presenting comments chronologically for content that is timeless. IMO you need some way to let stuff that is relevant at any point in the future float to the top, otherwise the comment threads will (eventually) be useless, because it will take too long to find the good stuff. Of course, this is a pretty deep problem.

Anyway, just a few things that occured to me while having a quick look around.

I agree. Articles could do with dedicated forum topics I guess. Not sure if commenting directly below them is useful at all? Also, the interface indeed doesn't really lure you into the interactive parts of the site, which hopefully will become one of it's major strengths.

and I'd like to underline what kb said already: a clear resource section (perhaps it is an idea to mirror important papers n stuff so there's no constantly checking if the links still work)

awesome initiative - looks like this project will make it! Excellent Gloom, Garg, & whoever! Cheers from the Darklitebasement!!

Great initiative and great work (advertised on d.fr).

But I agree wirh M. Beauregard, for me the major downside is that there is not enough emphasis on the community aspect of the site (strong publishing system, poor forum system/no member profile/no "unread comments" button).

Right now the "displayhack community" seems to be more on the internal mailing-list than on the site :/.

First of all - thank you for all the feedback (praise and critique - it's all good :). I just want to say the following: we know the site isn't 100% refined yet, and we're fine with that. As you can tell by this thread, the idea was spawned a long time ago (in fact, I registered the domain displayhack.org back in august of 2009). The fact that the idea finally came to fruition is a sort of testament to the faith I had in the original idea, but back to the point: we wanted to get the site launched and THEN improve it in increments. The worst things in the world are those who are never released. :)

With regards to the forum: we know it isn't ideal as it is, but we're bound by some restrictions by bbPress which is currently the best integrated wordpress forum. We plan to replace comments with threads in the forum, and then list those underneath the posts, but it requires a bit more Wordpress/bbPress coding wizardry, and there are only so many hours in the day for Gargaj. (yes, unbelievable as it might sound, it's true :)

In terms of the feel of the forum - the only way to change it is to contribute -- that simple :) Yes, it feels a little "not lived in" right now, but we can't go around posting with ghost-accounts just to make it look populated either. :)

Member profiles: they are there, just a little hard to find. :)
