I know I've heard this melody in some scene music but I just can't place it.

International Karate if I'm not mistaken - can't say if Hubbard took that melody from somewhere tho. Stuff like that happened back in the good old days ;)

Reyn Ouwehand - Asian Legends, the theme starts somewhere around 05:10

I might also be just tone deaf...

Honestly, the demoscene - David Bowie connection does my heart good. ( : I haven't seen "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" but I've been planning to ever since I heard he was in it. Ok, I admit the main point is Sakamoto, since Hubbard covered him, not Bowie. But still ( :
Now I have *three* fanboy reasons to see that film.
