this has so much great stuff going on that i actually would like to rip it apart and create at least two completely different demos from it. one comprising the awesome 3D visuals and one having all the retro-esque goof stuff, for example. feels a little like a waste of some outstanding ingredients. but hell, it still got me off my chair :)

Yeah, I apologize for that. I had only about three days to make the whole Mario-Bowser stuff before meeting the deadline.
And even after the deadline I was asked to change the Mario and Bowser a bit within four hours in order to make it copyright-acceptable.
I actually didn't really even plan to make them, but... you didn't have too much time to plan back then.
Next year -> a lot shorter prod. Maybe I'll succeed then.

the scene with cubes is great but its all good.
The reason this ruled was the direction, music, and the ultra-tight sync rather than the effects. Put this formula together on a realtime demo and you have an instant win, regardless of if the shaders are worse or the polycount is lower.
This is absolutely brilliant! Watched it 100 times and I'm sure it will still hold up at 1000. Everything just fits prefectly and the music could make anything dance. And that insane truck looks so good it makes you angry..
I'm sad of not having been at asm to hear the crowd cheering at this masterpiece.
