KICKASS!
RESPECT (again) !
pro's:
+ impressive amount of work
+ up-to-date technical content
+ cool voice
+ entertainment factor present
+ satisfying music, though fr does it better (imho)
con's:
- ugly transitional effects
- too many camera glitches
- sometimes kitsch looking lighting
- overall horrible colors and design-twists
conclusion:
this could have been so much better if someone with a little taste arranged the visual appearance. last year he did it by himself, this time a musician got involved, lets hope that next year a graphician comes into play ;)

From the technical point of view this is stunning...
Although design wise i still frefer fr...

It would be nice with a remove motion blur abuses option.
This was so damn cool on the party.. Looked better than most demo entries. Roks! (And I usually hate these kind of demos)
A kick-ass demo, technically on top !
Cool effects, voice & music, respect !
Cool effects, voice & music, respect !
Great technically (graphics, vocoder). Even the scenes themselves were pretty good.
But there's the horrible motion-blur, the, ahem, lacklustre transitions, the music itself, the colours... And it's too long.
It's like a TBL intro except 6 years later. Still thumbs-up for the swashbuckling effort, ofcourse.

great effort, great technical performance.
but totally horrible timing and overuse of effects.
still thumbs up, but this could've been so much better with a bit more taste+work...

SOFUCKINGIMPRESSIVE! my favourite intro now.
Technically the best 64k ever, I suppose.
best 64k ever !
Put a screenshot bitte!
absolutely astonishing.
all the time and dedication that must have gone into this really shows.
i´m looking forward to assembly 04 ;)

I feel that the intro is somewhat spoiled by excessive use of lightning and especially that blur. It turns into a blurry mixture of effects. Underneah this blur, is probably the best looking scenes ever.
Without it, it would have been the best intro ever, i guess. Love the music. But ofcourse, this achievement is still awesome.

This one sets a new limit... again :)
Question is, who will be the first to do better ;) Game on!

...the screenshot is a bit sucky, but it's the best i managed; it's really hard to get something that is not just blur with some overlay :)
Stunning intro. Could you make an option to turn off the horizontal lines though? :) I don't mind the blur; it especially looks great in the pipe scene.
Hey, I don't get any speech! I only get the music. Weird, any thoughts? Win98, CMI8738 4ch onboard sound, DX9.

teh shit.
totally.
totally.
phoenix: win98 is the problem, the speech apparently uses the builtin windows speech synth, which is only there with win2k and later. :)
Best intro ever. I liked the overlay and lag effects, they fit perfectly in the scene and helped to bring over the mood.
I wonder what Carmack will say when he realizes that someone made an 64k intro which looks better than doom3 :).

I don't actually have anything to complain about (except for the longish end scroller and it's not that bad). I like the blur, the colors, the design. For me this is way better than FR has ever done, much more interesting.
I don't think any prod has ever got as many points (18181) at Assembly.

"the speech apparently uses the builtin windows speech synth"
Best idea ever :)
Best idea ever :)
cgk: luckily that isn't the case. far from that. have you ever actually seen it?
using the windows speech synth sounds like an idea i'd like to try too :P
* still prefers fr, their productions are more mature *

After this it's of no use making techno-style 64k intros. End of the line.
Quite boring. The robo-thing was nice, though and yeah, the whole thing is technically great.
"using the windows speech synth sounds like an idea i'd like to try too :P"
we did that for fr06 final, but somehow didn't want to require it in an intro, it somehow feels like cheating :)

as i said right after the compo: "If this had been a demo, this would have been fucking excellent"
Kick ass!
Impressive
That zoom/blur transition is the most fugly thing in quite a while, but nothing a neat robot can't make up for. Good product.
actually, the speech was what impressed me most. but using windows for that? till now, at least the major intros tried to limit "cheating" of this kind to a minimum. well, maybe this intro redefines the rules. i would not like that.
whats left after i subtract the speech is still a "thumb up", although i hate the music-style.

Hey, if Windows fonts are fair game, the speech synth probably is too. Whatever comes standard with Windows.. just would've been nice if win98 had it too. :)
AND did it again
I actually thought of using the built in speech synthesis, but i decided it was too dirty a trick, but I guess it's ok then.. :)
besides that a very nice intro..
besides that a very nice intro..
Last year I had no Geforce card to watch Squish, now I have no GF3+ to watch this one...
Great code! As many others have pointed out, there are times when I really would like to SEE a scene, instead of it just bluring off, or pixeliing or swinging away the camera.
Still one of the top 64ks ever.
He, I actually sat and thought "How the HELL could he have coded a speechsynth that sounds so good in 64k?". Guess I know the answer to that now! :)

I don't know if that's possible but imo the voice of the msAgent would have sounded better with a slower diction. The engine and scenes are damn good, I see no need to show the wireframes which makes a cut with the design of the scenes.
All the rest rocks.
All the rest rocks.
technically impressive.
content made me dizzy.
music is okayish.
where is the color overkill? :)

The usual overload of effects and transitions from AND, but what the hell. Clearly it rulez. The walking mech gets a standing ovation.
There were good entries in the intros, but man this rocked. The typical pipescene is usually damn boring, but yeah, this was excellent work.
It's all been said. The quality of the speech synth was what amazed me the most in this intro.. I guess I don't have to wonder about that one anymore (I'm afraid that this will start a new trend) :-P
Argh, GF3 required...
russian 64k jihad!
yay! technical stunning intro. and did it again. windows-speech? i don´t care - this rocks.
This one was "Auf die Fresse"!!!
100% the style I like ;)))
Thumbs up for this.
100% the style I like ;)))

this rules anyway
So, will we be hearing the Windows speech in 64k as often as we see the Arial TTF now? :)
Blew me away! Even liked the music this time... ;) But with this nice softsynth it must be possible to do something else than goa.. ? eta otschin prikrasna!
Uhm.. I don't like the idea of using Windows speech synth but... rulez.
greatest win32 64k ever
For those of you who want to see/try the windows speech synth with code samples: http://download.microsoft.com/download/speechSDK/SDK/5.1/WXP/EN-US/speechsdk51.exe
This is no big deal to use... I guess few knew this when woting for this prod :(

strepto: thanks for the link.
i like the idea, free speech, it's not like it's a bad thing. on the contrary: nice of and to point this out :)

nice. Just give a designer to AND and they will make something very good. To fast camera moves for me, some not good-looking colors, but code is perfect.
this package was surely the best you can get
the speechsynth isnt standard in windows 2k, there has been lots of discussion around swedish sceners about using this synth.. but due to the xp only thing noone has been using it.
(the bad standard voice is another reason)
(the bad standard voice is another reason)
stefan: explain, it appeared to work in 2k.. i thought he was just using some nifty parameters and perhaps postprocessing the sound..
yay! except for the zoom-transition. maybe the intro should have been called fold-off-the-screen 3 instead .. ;)
I do not like the music, I do not really like the style (far too much blurs, fast moving cameras and whatnot), but then. I am impressed. The code seems genious (also without the synth), and I like the models aswell. Especially the robot looks really cool.
Shit, am I the only person who didn't like this?
Hard work? Sure.
Technically impressive? How the hell am I supposed to know??? I couldn't see a damn thing!
Everything was so blurry I couldn't make anything out. I rubbed my eyes, slapped the side of the monitor, stepped further back. All to no avail.
This was *FRUSTRATING* to watch. I booed it out loud. It seems as though there is a nice engine underneath, but there was too much vaseline on the lens.
The blurring was way too much. But I did get a bit of relief at the end credits where, finally, the robot was clearly visible. At any rate, frustrating. Pissed me off.
And then there's this whole external speech synthesizer thing. I didn't hear it and don't agree with using external datas. (One day someone will "compress" The Lord Of The Rings movie into a 4K intro by opening up Windows Media Player and loading a divx from some web location. After all, everyone has Windows Media Payer, and everyone has a 'net connection. 'Cept those that don't...)

What comes to the speech synth used in the intro, the people dissing it should also have an equally negative attitude towards equally external things like the sound/video drivers and the underlying operating system plus all the mechanics provided by it. These are all ready-made products by external vendors, after all.
Also, you'd think that this intro was not 64k either. After installing a system that you can run it on, the total size on disk usually totals to a few hundred megabytes (talking about 'default' installations). But... didn't all the productions running on the same machine have these same preconditions? Yes of course. It's only a question of how you use (or leave unused) what you have available!
After all, if you think about it, using a large ready-made graphics API (D3D/OpenGL) is actually a lot worse in comparison. Everyone does that, and with a reason. The only difference is that the usage of gfx APIs is accepted, while the use of the in-built speech synth of Windows has not even been considered publicly in that manner, prior to this production. Of course, the scale of things being considered varies along with the things you can do with them, but is there really a difference?
That said, speaking less analytically, I experienced this as the definately best single demoscene production of the modern era, leaving many great productions weeping behind (not unlike many of the criticizers of this intro). I haven't yet seen this on a CRT, but I saw it where it really mattered the most. After a couple of days, I'm still absolutely thrilled. Naturally, I had high expectations but this one exceeded them by far. Zoom3 made all other productions at asm03 seem pale indeed, not excluding entries of the overall exceptionally good-quality democompo.
Wonder if AND can do yet better...?

plek: if you make a clean installation of win2k without adding the speechsynth (its under the helpers thingy) you wont get it...
(its also installed if you have msagent stuff)
(its also installed if you have msagent stuff)
dunno now when this speachthing blahblah, still impressive though, with the robot and all eah, but since I didnt get any speech in 98 im dissapointed =(
stefan: aha, because i don't recall explicitly enabling either of these in my (unmodified/sp'ed) win2k install. but it's prolly default in some builds then.. ;)
uhm, and since it dontwork on my computer I almoust wish I gave it a thumb down as I usually do with prods that dont work on my puter but since it was so good and jadijadi I forgive it

The drivers doesnt contain software that generates scenes or plays speechsynth.. Now take in account that theese dll's are not standard, most people have them since they are often installed with some other ms programs, but still.. this is not the way to go.. maybe in a couple of years when it has been standard in windows for a while and 2k is gone (about 98 i couldnt care less:).

agree with stefan here for once (who'd have though it? :). using a 3d api and the graphics drivers is the most direct route to the 3d hardware on current machines. there's simply no way you could do it differently in a win32 application. so there's really no point arguing about THAT issue, because it is absolutely not related to the "using external content" problem :)
the closest thing is probably using windows standard fonts, which win 64ks have been doing for ages, and i admit the distinction gets very fishy here. bottom line is it's very hard to reasonably argue that point, but i still would feel better about the intro if it didn't use the ms speechsynth :)

yes, stefan really has a point there. About fonts vs speech synth: I guess everyone can draw a set of characters, or even generating them shouldn't be a problem with the tools some of us already have at hand. And most default windows fonts have been default since win95...
But writing such a speech synth like the ms one is by far not as trivial, using it would probably be a quick way around a big problem, not to mention that it would probably get undeserved credit...
I think this was a good idea for once, and had the right impact where it had to. I'd hate to see it becoming a trend tho...

i wonder what coder hasn't thought of using MS Speech API for an intro/demo :-)
I got mixed feelings about this one. Almost everything has been said, overuse of blurring effects, using external speech(at least AND shouldn't give himself credits for it). And am I the only one who thinks it sounds lame? We had a speech util for DOS 7-8 years ago and that sounded the same, no development ever since that.
Didn't like the music, but I guess that's my problem :)
What I DID like are the lighting and shadows, and big respect for the walking robot, that is awesome.
A piggy.

the robot! the robot!
oops I crapped my pants.
yeah, AND credits himself for "speech" in the infofile. seems a bit stupid. oh well.
actually, I just rewatched it on my home machine and was rather disappointed... the sound doesn't have enough 'oomph' in it, there's waaaay to much blur, wireframe/zoom transitions are damn ugly and the speech is so helplessly synthetic it made me laugh instead of be amazed or something...
it's a typical partycrowd-burner intro... watch it on a huge screen and loud strereo and you're hooked, watch it at home and all the flaws suddenly come leaping at you from inside the monitor...

impressive
This is something amazing.
blah, stop the wanking..
this is imo tasteless, dirty and ugly.
ok, very fine code yes.. but lacks the rest.
still, respect for the work/time you spend coding it.

I was totally blown away seeing this at asm. I haven't seen it since, and maybe if I do I'll find some flaws and stuff to complain about... but it doesn't matter. Being impressed like that, looking around in the party hall, watching dropping jaws all around you... people screaming and applauding.. it's what demos are about... or at least should be.
About the speech debate... sure, I was disappointed... but still, I respect the guy for having the guts to do something he must have realized would be controversial.. as we can see here, there have been thoughts about it before and it took an intro using it to bring the discussion to the surface.
The blurring, transitions and lighting rocked.. if you don't agree, go watch fr-08 again instead... ;)

FUCKING GREAT!!!
congratulations, AND!
congratulations, AND!
as plek said. thumbs up for the ride, tho.
Negative points first:
- using the Windows Speech API and then crediting yourself is plain lame. Sorry. (or maybe I'm just jealous how much I could've done in FR intros if I was permitting myself to cheat).
- Also the rest of the soundtrack was in comparison extremely weak. Sound- as well as composition-wise this is where I imagine 4k intros in maybe a year, but definitely NOT 64k intros now.
- all that blurry zoomy layer stuff may have its visual appeal, but you totally overused it. The worst part is that it regularly brings a GF4 as well as a Radeon9000 to its knees; and combined with the fast movement all you see is a slide show of random trash pixels. Not too entertaining.
Other than that: Absolutely stunning. The models and the lighting look just uber. Congrats ;)

Absolutely incredible. Looking forward to see the full intro, and not just the slideshow I'm watching on my gf-fx at the moment ;)
Whitout this entry the Assembly '03 64k intro competition would have been a great disappointment but I was waiting for another killer intro by AND after the last year winner. Some scenes were way too blurry and the music should have been better for a real killer intro but still it saved my saturday at Assembly 2003.
none of the both versions that were delivered within the .zip work here.
Dalezy: GF3 needed I guess.
I want a DivX now. ++
I want a DivX now. ++
the only thing i can say is "holy shit!". this is by far the most impressive 64k I seen in my life!!! it's worth a watch and the music is superb as well.
Yes, yes, this kicks some serious äääss!!!
yes!
yep, a killer one. the robot especially. :)
AWESOME!! Great work indeed..
the speech thing sucks...
but this is so great, still there is so much room for improvement. way to go and

Watching and hearing this on the party stream was jaw dropping for sure, so I can only imagine what happened at the party place. I so much wanted to see this on my own computer and I was particularly stunned by the quality of the voice synth.
Imagine my disappointment when I learnt that the speech synth was actually the one built in windows. I was further let down seeing how much cpu/gpu power this needs. And even more seeing the blurriness hide half the intro.
Nevertheless, zoom3 does induce much adrenaline, the end result works just fine, the robot rocks and the overall quality of the 64k intro compo at asm03 was relatively low, so, it definately earns a thumb up. But I can't help feeling a bitter taste about it.
About the speech API, I hope most coders realise how lame it is to use it and how much more lame it will be to use it *again*. It's ok if AND dared to use it once, if we keep watching demos with it it's going to suck big time, even more than legos if you ask me :-)

I was quite impressed to hear he used the built-in speech synth. As far as i'm concerned, if it's included in an average setup of a recent version of the OS, use it. It is enabled in win2k default install (at least since service pack2 - i have a default setup next to me and checked). I'd say the 2 most recent versions of windows should be acceptable (we're aiming to make good-looking demos here, not legacy apps!)
There was similar controversy when people started to use 3d cards, and make demos that wouldn't run under dos, and even that needed extra fast-mem on amiga. It'll settle down soon enough, and we will have 64kb intros with speech and better effects cause extra space is available :)
How about a divx so I can actually watch it now ;)

yeah, divx please
theoretically this is all very cool.
but the low frame rate makes the visual quality suffer a lot.
and the permanent blurring, especially in combination with the blocky green wireframes, is simply ugly.

The blur amount is framerate dependant, so less framerate means more blur. Try on a fast cpu with a radeon 9800 pro or similar.
roulez!
WOW, a hell of a ride.
btw nice hidden ascii at the end of the exe ;)
Just AWESOME... technically (except the thing that it needs a really fast card)
Designwise: Haven't we seen enough of those garage/pipe/whatever scenes?
It's not too entertaining, but overall the technical side is what it makes absolutely memorable.
That robot ROCKS!!!!

Uhm. You'll kill me, but...
- blur sucks
- an intro without design sucks even more
- using Microsoft speech synth and writing the end scroller as you did it sucks like my ex-girlfriend

Looks better than a lot of >64k demos, which shows how far 64k demos have come in such a short amount of time. The same can be said about AND's 4k entry, which also packed a lot into a really small space. In fact, I liked the music in the 4k demo better than this. As for the speech, even if it uses the Windows API, I think the execution is flawed, since it doesn't sound all that cool... I liked the voice implementation in Farbrausch's Candytron much better, and fit the style of the demo, too, which I think is more important than just doing something for the sake of doing it. Overall, though, this thing is really impressive, even when you have high expectations going in.
Start flipping my normals... overall an impressive piece of work especially on the technical side (programming that is!) but getting a graphic designer involved wouldn´t hurt...
Amazing work. People says it lacks design and variation but hey, it's only 64k. I've seen demos far worse getting good placings and this intro is lightyears ahead of those.
Bad:
- The speech synth kinda ruins the feeling, it's disillusioning to hear the same speech I hear from that stupid wizard dude thingy... (and crediting yourself for it is sucky as well...)
- No credits to Aardbei for the texgen...
- The blurs are overused (can't see a thing), and the green pixelize filter is bad.
- It's just the same scene repeating over and over again.
Good:
- Funky synth.
- Cool models (the robot rules)
- The lighting and shadows rule hard.
- Very much content for a 64k
Well... let's say it's a thumbs up intro. But the 4k was better. :)

Outstanding. But the blur is too much. the reason i dont thumb it up is that, thru the whole thing i felt this should be a demo with a proper and more kicking soundtrack. Its not that the tune itself is bad, but the sound quality and lack of depth totally kills the whole experience for me.
now you have to explain us how did you recognize aardbei's texture generator within this shitload of blur, fog, shadows, shit, drunk cameras, robots and metaballs...
friol...thats pretty sharp there. I'd like to know that to.
hm, there were hardly any textures. and what do they have to do with aardbei?
Respect again.
cool music.
cool design.
great code!!!
However, blur is used too much.
Some colors do not look not much good, either.
However, it is still cool.

Nice Intro, long but looking cool :)
fiver2: The texture-generator that was used is ATG. Or at least the textures are compatible. (Depacked the exe, was able to load it with ATG 2.0)
unfortunately what gargaj says is true (and it is true also for the "squish" intro, I checked).
so, ripped and not credited texture generator, maybe also other ripped code in this intro?
squish was ages better, by the way...

AND kicks ass for sure.
A very nice intro, even if it doesn't respect the goal of a demo. Making the maximum with the minimum. A Geforce4 TI 4600 or better is strongely recommended...for this, Farbrausch has my full respect. ;)

Thank you And for giving to me,
Your fantastic intro called Zoom 3.
With robots and colours and blurs galore,
I saw this once and it dropped my jaw.
But now I see what these comments teach,
Of ripped text-gens and Windows speech.
For this they accuse you of being a cheat,
But can they themselves match your feat?
It doesn’t matter to me what they say,
This is my favourite demo in just 64k.
Had you entered the demo comp instead,
I think you would still have come out ahead.
The robot rocks, the marching cubes effect rocks, the lighting rocks. (It also seems quite fluid on a GF3, contrary to what others have said, but I might just be less picky about the framerate. :-) )
The music, however, sucks, and so does taking credit for speech/texgen when it's not yours at all. :-) Besides, it's more or less the same over and over again.

ultimate gas, nice poetry :)
I don't get it, why everyone is whining about the speech synth? At least for me, it wasn't the thing that amazed me the most. IMO the most impressive thing was the modelling...
Music sucks, some effects look too blurred and have too much colour but the rest is great.

Technically awesome. A bit repetitive and lacking in the fun department, but wtf it is just brilliant.
Congratulations, Diman. Keep up the excellent work!
About Windows speech: I just don't get the point why using system-provided API for hardware rendering is fair while using Speech API is not? I wonder how many nowadays coders are able to code triangle rasterizer that would be as accurate as hardware one is.
(To those who argue that Speech API is not installed by default: at first, in most cases it is, at second, which operation system does include DirectX 9 in its default installation??)
Besides, using Speech API is not that trivial as one may think (requires different code paths for w2k and wxp). By the way, voice also differs under those systems (with XP one being noticeably better). So that, considering amount of work required to get it sound in a way And wanted (and put that in 64k intro), there was a reason for him to give himself credit for 'speech' (notice he hadn't written 'vocoder' or smth alike).
About ATG: well, AFAIK And has coded a texture generator of his own, with smaller size, leaving format compatible just for easier editing. Of course it's no excuse for not giving a credit to aardbei. But I believe he has simply somehow forgotten to give it - can't believe he did that intentionally. And never rips, it's just not in his style :-)

Using a 3D API is the only way of using 3d hardware in a usermode application. There's absolutely no chance to do it any differently. As said, the issue is (if any) more related to the question of whether using Windows' standard fonts is ok or not :)

now no one will ever get credit for the hard work of designing a homemade speech synth again.. that just sux!
The same crap again... use the tools available to create a great piece of audiovisual work, that's the way this works.
For every complainer in here, I sense 5 people browsing the Speech API sdk right now... And can laugh HARD on his way home, thanks for opening yet more avenues!

I have yet to see this intro on my own computer, but with regards to using windows speech and fonts, I suppose it technically violates the 64k rule, but then so do external libraries, direct x drivers, not to forget the OS in general. Anything that requires Windows to run isn't fundamentally a 64k intro.
So what exactly are the rules of making a 64k intro?
I think And is just shouldering the criticism for being the first (but probably not the last)to use these particular features, just as many previous 64k intros were probably criticised for using external libraries and drivers at the time of their release.
The sad thing about this is that it kinda undermines the purpose of the 64k limitation, which has to be disheartening for some coders (especially those who have worked so long and hard making voice synths).

So I'm assuming you're suggesting everyone who does a 64k intro writes his own limited OS and makes his intro bootable from floppy? What about DOS intros using BIOS interrupts? Etc?

i want a second version without all that blur filters. but this intro rulez anyway.
Sagacity: I’m just making a point that there’s no way to truly define a 64k intro. No matter how much you dissect them, they’re always going to use resources outside of the 64k executable (even if it is only Bios interrupts).
Conversely, if a 64k intro is to be defined only by the size of its executable, then the entire resources of the OS are at the coder’s disposal – which could even be extended to include any samples and images included during installation (unless it’s explicitly forbidden by the rules of the competition).
I wouldn’t even try to argue one way or another, I’m just pointing out some ambiguities in the 64k category. But in And’s defence, he didn’t break any rules, he just made the most of a loophole. :)

Personally I couldn't care less how many pre-installed resources are (ab)used, since that's one of the fun parts of these types of intros. Oh well.
And the whole argument of 'proper' speech synths vs built-in ones is probably the same as hardware vs software rendering. Or something. Anyway.
On-topic: I agree with Diver's first sentence, except for his grammar.

I think saying "must use no external data" is an easy way to disqualify things like system fonts and MIDI sounds. (But then there's the question of enforcement...)
But bear in mind, I thumbed this down because of the blur effect. It really frustrated my poor eyeballs...

the rules for 64k intros are:
if you are the first to use an OS resource in a major production, you get beaten up by all the other coders. that hurts. it questions your production. that's why people think twice before using something new.
the second one who does it will get slapped a bit. after that, it's free to use for everybody.
Now AND gets all the shame, and the pouet-popularty he gains from this discussion is hardly a compensation. The worst of his actions is ofcourse unclear crediting.
I don't like this development. I say reasonable measures should be applied, but black-and-white thinking is so much easier than reasonable measures. An example: I think using one font is OK, we did this back on amiga, but using all windows fonts feels like cheating. but if we allow one font, then we must allow all fonts? thats logical, but not reasonable.

The built-in speech-sys sucks, doesn't even go near the level for e.g. the one in Planet Potion, so why argue? You ruin your own production by using it.
And besides this is not the only intro using it, check this 4k.
And besides this is not the only intro using it, check this 4k.
vanilla it sucks, but some tweaking and filtering can do a lot. being a scam artist is a quality for coders who want to do 64k's.
good job
Got my hands on a laptop able to run it...
To anyone complaining of the blur: it seems to be framerate dependent, I watched it at 320x240 and it looks way better.
Some really great modelling / animation and also great lighting. But the textures looked sucky where i could see them. Some effects worked well, others sucked (the green wireframe + pixel zoom would have probably looked great if filtering / line antialiasing was enabled...) Effects were also used too often. But i guess that if they weren't people would just diss it for being a flyby :)
Tune was ok, not great, but good enough I think.
Overall, it was a great intro, perhaps slightly too flawed to be a classic.

Great!
I used to think using pklite to make your prod twice as small was cheating too... So who carez? this is another great demo in 64k ...so thumbs up!
If i remove some dll files in my system dir i can`t run any intros. Damn cheaters.
Great work, but not such a revolution in my opinion.
this is so amazing !! I can't believe the 64kb !

best ever seen in 64kb
A_Lee_N: Windows 2000? Speech SDK not installed? Then the intro should trigger the auto install routine as soon as the COM object is requested, so no miracle ;)
kb: that's what i thought too.. but i tried running the intro without installing the files it asked for but the speech worked anyway. So it's still a mystery for me.
Well, technically really good. Nice lighting. Sound is, well... trance... uhum. The wireframe effect + zoom looked baad.
Overall : Thumbs up

Much better without the blur! Couldn't see a damn thing...
finnish PEOPLE SHOULD BE AFRAID FOR RUSSIAN ATTACKS :(((( (BTW. TOO MUCH BLUR AND NICE "SPEECH" CODE)
NJET!
It's like Kasparov crossed with Discloned crossed with 604 crossed with .the .product!
With speech too...
With speech too...
Just managed to watch it on my new Geforce TI, so here's my vote!
make a v1.03 where we can turn of option for the speech, which ruines the feeling in the intro
and also optimize your code, its like a slideshow even in 320x200 :P
and also optimize your code, its like a slideshow even in 320x200 :P
Shut up and get a better PC ;P Works just fine on my 9800pro ;D *lol* Didn't even run with the old one... :)
Finally saw this for the first time since the party and it just rocks. Music is better than in Squish, thanks to Cybermag. A must-watch on all accounts.
a bit slow and blur overdose, by nice intro. Great msx
This is real good stuff, nice with winXP speechsynth :)
WOW! awesome...
Thank you for the 'disable blur' feature
Visual overload, even with the blur turned off. So what if it's got cool pixel shaders? There was so much green pixelation and warped camera movement, I couldn't see it anyhow. Annoying music, too. Sorry. I know that this is a good demo, but I personally just don't like the style.
pff. :(
strange, with a fast gfx card it looks way better! it looked alright on the 9100 radeon card (in low res...) but with my new card the blur and effects work much better. Probably this one will get better with time!
Really, when I watched this for the first time I thought for a second that this may actually terminate any further attempts of producing a visually stunning Intro, since this proves once and for all that there are not really any limits... Obviously that is not true, but this kind of graphical realism has yet to be beaten in 64k.
Considering this, I am a bit surprised that this is relatively unpopular, especially compared to FR-08. For example, I do not understand what is supposed to bad about the music. The softsynth features some relatively complex non-sawtooth tone colors, and the tune is really a matter of taste. And, from what I know, 3D-models that resemble real-life objects are a lot harder to compress to a few lines of code than nice abstract forms.
When I heard "Microsoft Sam" introducing the intro, I thought "hey, that's a funny idea", instead of "how lame, now everyone is going to do it" or even "cheater", which is apparently not the case.
I think the walking animation of the robot is especially amazing. It sure must have been a lot of work to make it appear so smooth in 64k.
Designwise this could be better, the effects were so dense that each one filled about one frame on my "slow" Radeon 8500, but (or even because of that) it fulfills the main goal that even most top intros have - "look at how much we can pack in 64k" - very well.
Using Aardbei's texture generator... Well, I cannot judge that, but there were not that many textures in this intro, so I think it is not that big of a crime.
Basically, I do not see any weak points in this intro, but instead some outstandingly strong ones, so it definitely deserves a thumb up.

forgot that one..
this is of course THE bomb..
and IMHO even better then FR's latest intros..

The zoom blur transition is not exactly the most beautiful thing out there, nor is the pixelized green wireframe, but the sheer amount of stuff included, as well as the animated robot, make this a sure winner!
Absolutely amazing, this truly is an intro that could win most demo-competitions...
Oh yeah, that voco trick is pretty neat btw =)
Ultimate Gas, nice poem =P
There is one major dissapointment: Using the ATG format without giving due credits, but that's another story...

it's just fabulous!!

Very tech-style. I liked squish more but this still rulez.
Incredible amounts of stuff packaged into 64K!!!
Unfortunately, this one has a complete lack of style. But nevertheless, the code is awesome, thus a big thumb up.
all of that in only 64k, that is impressive
robot animation is good, it's looks like a demo but in very few kbs
i dislike the music, not my taste, the voices saves it
a coder wich make the gfxs and design, for me it's not possible, but here the job is done and win my thumb up ;)

Haven't thumbed this one yet?? Uh oh! Well it simply kicks ass.. technically atleast. Although, I think it wasn't as stunning as it was on the big screen :) (ie. wireframe stuff looked mostly crap etc.)
Did I say that robo rocks ?

very nice
i can't help it, but i'm not impressed by these kind of intros, they're just plain boring
great code, the rest is mediocre
Use of windows speech sucks, and that zooming (pixel doubling) is kinda disturbing.
Other than that the 3d scenes is well made and good lightning features. Robot and that "water" thing rules very much.

WoW =) very nice =)
This is still the most impressive 64k intro ever.
Second Mz
phew. senseless techdemo... how to use blur and lights to hide the bugs...
too blurry. sorry...
nice
Respect !
It's a demo party
nice
It's one of my favourite intros and one reason to boot windows.
Yeah this intro roxxxx ...
It's smooooooooothhhhhhh !
It's smooooooooothhhhhhh !
Got to give thumbs up for the technical merit, but when watching this at home instead of the Asm bigscreen, this just seems boring. The mech is dead cool though.
who can thumb this down ??! Due to the fact that this all was stuffed in 64kb, one should think twice about that ...
anyway ... I personally like this one ...
anyway ... I personally like this one ...
This was really cool at assembly, but a bit boring at home. It is still great intro.
AND you did a great job in zoom3 *respect*
makes me nauseous :/
awesome code, mediocre visuals... well, some scenes were fine.
Well....... it will make your head spin with average of 6 fps on a FX 5700, AMD XP2400+. And its not even a LE. I obviously will not lower the resolution without FSAA.
Not the best computer, but will play most games without lag. ie. 15 frames per second. My eyes can't see any problem with 12 fps anyway........ Its quite good, but it lags. Recommended for FX5900 XT and UP.

simply rockzzzz
it's bloody boooring.
technically good but OMG the texts, the speech, the design !!!
rocks

good
I should have thumbed this up ages ago.
just another thumb up...
A bit static scenes but great for being a 64k. The speech was used a bit too much---nice in the beginning but got boring in the end. Good work anyhow.
Needs a good GFX card.
Didn't knew it was MS speech engine =P ! A bit of surprise now.
Does some prod with (intelligible) speech synthesis already exists?
Great work anyway! I guess how the "meta-worm" (?) part exactly works.

Great 64K.
Was great back then
Great!! Really Great 64k!!
christ.. almost want to say nothing..
other than i liked; but could have used more variation, so pig.

this was sooo cool when it got released :)
- mediocre (boring) wannabe trance music
- lame robot model (omg when will we get rid of these?)
- lame texts (TRANCE GENERATION OMFG!)
....but still, very good idea to use the speech generator (it's not lame, its innovative to use the components the platform delivers you) - *very* good engine, a lot of stuff packed into 64k, and besides i liked it a lot when i saw it the first time, too bad that the scripting is so pointless that it gets boring after seeing it for many times.

gorgeous!
Quite cool, unique blurry look and detailed scenes plus I like the music. Was amazing on the big screen.
What's so unique about a blurry look? When overused, blur is ugly, and this one is no different. However, eventhough this intro it not really my thing, calling it a bad intro would not do it justice, so here comes the thumb...
nice trip but it is mostly the same again and again ...
great 64k
legendary
A polished 64k with good sync and a clever idea using the windows speech thingy.
Looks and sounds still good although it`s already 3 years old.

Don't like the music... and it would be much better without the text. Nice effects, though. -> piggie
technicalities...
though the speech sucks :)
AND !
Yeah! (altho I dislike the use of windows synth)
Technically rulez, but nothing else I like... :(
good prod but some things i don't like
A lot of work here. Amazing stuff.
+1
amazing. i loved the robo.
uhm... forgot to thumb this one up ;)
Rox.
stunning
Compared to some actually 64k releases, it's still up-to-date. Really great work.
This is just too good. I still wonder how AND communicates with the M$ speech engine :)
Visual, effects and models are quite stunning for it’s size. Thumb up! But for my taste the camera movements are really too fast and together with all the blurring it was hard to really “enjoy” the scenes. Soundtrack?! …well… I just watched Micropolis and read kb’s comment … and this nice kind of irony made me smiling …
Wow. This is the best I have seen for a long time! Great Music, Nice robotic and mesh wireframe.
Very impressive!!!
Classic by now, surpassed by very few.
already a classic.
I like this one.
Very good for 2003 - even very good for today and a couple of years to come.
The music lacks some bass, but in general it's fine.

Excellent!
and again...the Transitions :))
gay!
nice prod but music suxx bigtime!
it's my thumb
wtf i never commented on this? awesome 64k. the "vocoder" is just a clever trick that makes it even cooler than using a real one :D
wow! impressive! nice job fellows!
nice technological blowjob =))
Haven't thumbed yet? Oh my. Awesome intro, took my breath away in 2003!

I want a narrator.device demo!
Gigantic work! Shadows everywhere. Not my favorite, but I can definitely show respect!
Overrated but great
Lots of content in 64k, good synth, great modelling, and an awesome technical achievement overall. But also: too much Kasparov, too much blur, cheesy slogans; and while it was a good idea, the Windows speech synth is quite annoying. Left a bad aftertaste.
Very nice one. Speech synthesis sounds very good! BRAVO!
Fun watching! :D
This sure was cool! Amazing stuff.
it was great on the big screen but now it's just boring. and annoying. mostly boring.
Basically kasparov in 64k and on steroids. Still one of the big 64k milestones, so thumbs up.
Repeats itself too much and the pixellation-effect (or whatever to call it) really bugs me. Still a good achievement technically, nice models and the speech trick is very clever, though it sounds dull.
Still one of my favourite 64k..
for got to thumb
it's my mind...
Damn, M$ Sam lost under vista :(
Impressive 64k!
It still rules!
A very nice intro with an impressive show of scenes. And a really good use of M$ Sam. I'll have to try that in a 4k some time...
really in your face - a little dated now - but AND stuff is great.
Great

!!! iZ3D-Anaglyph 3D-Driver compatible !!!
(just requires DirectX and some red/cyan-"glasses" - that's it and it's freeware !)
In real 3D even a greater experience !

Impressive amount of work!
Such a lovely prod.
soundtrack and speech totally ruined this.
Really love the soundtrack - the speech matches quite well too.

It's a modern classic!
Needs better direction and a better musician, but technically this is a groundbreaking prod deserving of all respect one could give.
what sagacity said years ago, but it's now a classic :)
restore speech for Win 7 without installing anything (replaces Sam voice with Anna): pferrie.host22.com/misc/dosbox.htm
Classic.
under win 7 64bit, the highlight - speech, was not supported...
but this prod is my absolute fav, thx a lot "and"!

technically impressive
I found this demo to be really really boring.
missing thumb
PHONG OVERLOAD
STENCIL SHADOW OVERLOAD
RADIAL BLUR OVERLOAD
HYPER WIDE-ANGLE OVERLOAD
CHEESY "SPEECH SYNTH" OVERLOAD
But still kind of charming. Even though it's ugly, I like how it looks like mid-late 90s homebrew raytracing, except in realtime. Small thumb.

holy shit
wow
a bit awkward here and there but over-all it was revolutionary for its time
Could be a 2018 Aphex Twin music video.
uhmmmm, squash was better in some places, like that cheezy music.
thumb up anyway :)

Pretty sure i had thumbed this up
Still awesome, without the voice. I personally liked the music and the blur so obligatory thumb
For everyone that wants the SPEECH in windows 7,8,10, get this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zq6plle2okh7h9c/zoom3_v1_02_final.rar
You must install the WinXP_TTS_Voices_v1.3.exe (Windows XP speech voices)
Enjoy the best 64k DEMO EVER!!!

Insane amount of modelling stuff, presented in a set of cool rendering effects. Music also does its job very well.
