RESPECT (again) !
rulez added on the 2003-08-10 14:11:12 by dairos dairos
pro's:
+ impressive amount of work
+ up-to-date technical content
+ cool voice
+ entertainment factor present
+ satisfying music, though fr does it better (imho)

con's:
- ugly transitional effects
- too many camera glitches
- sometimes kitsch looking lighting
- overall horrible colors and design-twists

conclusion:
this could have been so much better if someone with a little taste arranged the visual appearance. last year he did it by himself, this time a musician got involved, lets hope that next year a graphician comes into play ;)

From the technical point of view this is stunning...

Although design wise i still frefer fr...

It would be nice with a remove motion blur abuses option.

This was so damn cool on the party.. Looked better than most demo entries. Roks! (And I usually hate these kind of demos)

A kick-ass demo, technically on top !
Cool effects, voice & music, respect !
rulez added on the 2003-08-10 14:41:33 by blaine blaine
Great technically (graphics, vocoder). Even the scenes themselves were pretty good.

But there's the horrible motion-blur, the, ahem, lacklustre transitions, the music itself, the colours... And it's too long.

It's like a TBL intro except 6 years later. Still thumbs-up for the swashbuckling effort, ofcourse.

great effort, great technical performance.
but totally horrible timing and overuse of effects.

still thumbs up, but this could've been so much better with a bit more taste+work...

absolutely astonishing.

i´m looking forward to assembly 04 ;)

I feel that the intro is somewhat spoiled by excessive use of lightning and especially that blur. It turns into a blurry mixture of effects. Underneah this blur, is probably the best looking scenes ever.

Without it, it would have been the best intro ever, i guess. Love the music. But ofcourse, this achievement is still awesome.
rulez added on the 2003-08-10 16:46:47 by z5 z5
This one sets a new limit... again :)
Question is, who will be the first to do better ;) Game on!
rulez added on the 2003-08-10 17:18:06 by BoyC BoyC
...the screenshot is a bit sucky, but it's the best i managed; it's really hard to get something that is not just blur with some overlay :)
added on the 2003-08-10 17:20:11 by ryg ryg
Stunning intro. Could you make an option to turn off the horizontal lines though? :) I don't mind the blur; it especially looks great in the pipe scene.

Hey, I don't get any speech! I only get the music. Weird, any thoughts? Win98, CMI8738 4ch onboard sound, DX9.

teh shit.
totally.
rulez added on the 2003-08-10 17:41:29 by lug00ber lug00ber
phoenix: win98 is the problem, the speech apparently uses the builtin windows speech synth, which is only there with win2k and later. :)
added on the 2003-08-10 17:45:37 by ryg ryg
Best intro ever. I liked the overlay and lag effects, they fit perfectly in the scene and helped to bring over the mood.

I wonder what Carmack will say when he realizes that someone made an 64k intro which looks better than doom3 :).
rulez added on the 2003-08-10 17:51:52 by cgk cgk
I don't actually have anything to complain about (except for the longish end scroller and it's not that bad). I like the blur, the colors, the design. For me this is way better than FR has ever done, much more interesting.

I don't think any prod has ever got as many points (18181) at Assembly.

"the speech apparently uses the builtin windows speech synth"

Best idea ever :)

we did that for fr06 final, but somehow didn't want to require it in an intro, it somehow feels like cheating :)

That zoom/blur transition is the most fugly thing in quite a while, but nothing a neat robot can't make up for. Good product.
added on the 2003-08-10 20:03:02 by Shifter Shifter
actually, the speech was what impressed me most. but using windows for that? till now, at least the major intros tried to limit "cheating" of this kind to a minimum. well, maybe this intro redefines the rules. i would not like that.

whats left after i subtract the speech is still a "thumb up", although i hate the music-style.
rulez added on the 2003-08-10 20:07:05 by chaos chaos
Hey, if Windows fonts are fair game, the speech synth probably is too. Whatever comes standard with Windows.. just would've been nice if win98 had it too. :)

Great code! As many others have pointed out, there are times when I really would like to SEE a scene, instead of it just bluring off, or pixeliing or swinging away the camera.
Still one of the top 64ks ever.

He, I actually sat and thought "How the HELL could he have coded a speechsynth that sounds so good in 64k?". Guess I know the answer to that now! :)
rulez added on the 2003-08-10 21:33:57 by Sdw Sdw
I don't know if that's possible but imo the voice of the msAgent would have sounded better with a slower diction. The engine and scenes are damn good, I see no need to show the wireframes which makes a cut with the design of the scenes.

All the rest rocks.

I do not like the music, I do not really like the style (far too much blurs, fast moving cameras and whatnot), but then. I am impressed. The code seems genious (also without the synth), and I like the models aswell. Especially the robot looks really cool.
rulez added on the 2003-08-11 19:54:57 by chock chock
Shit, am I the only person who didn't like this?

Hard work? Sure.

Technically impressive? How the hell am I supposed to know??? I couldn't see a damn thing!

Everything was so blurry I couldn't make anything out. I rubbed my eyes, slapped the side of the monitor, stepped further back. All to no avail.

This was *FRUSTRATING* to watch. I booed it out loud. It seems as though there is a nice engine underneath, but there was too much vaseline on the lens.

The blurring was way too much. But I did get a bit of relief at the end credits where, finally, the robot was clearly visible. At any rate, frustrating. Pissed me off.

And then there's this whole external speech synthesizer thing. I didn't hear it and don't agree with using external datas. (One day someone will "compress" The Lord Of The Rings movie into a 4K intro by opening up Windows Media Player and loading a divx from some web location. After all, everyone has Windows Media Payer, and everyone has a 'net connection. 'Cept those that don't...)
sucks added on the 2003-08-11 19:56:32 by sea_monkey sea_monkey
What comes to the speech synth used in the intro, the people dissing it should also have an equally negative attitude towards equally external things like the sound/video drivers and the underlying operating system plus all the mechanics provided by it. These are all ready-made products by external vendors, after all.

Also, you'd think that this intro was not 64k either. After installing a system that you can run it on, the total size on disk usually totals to a few hundred megabytes (talking about 'default' installations). But... didn't all the productions running on the same machine have these same preconditions? Yes of course. It's only a question of how you use (or leave unused) what you have available!

After all, if you think about it, using a large ready-made graphics API (D3D/OpenGL) is actually a lot worse in comparison. Everyone does that, and with a reason. The only difference is that the usage of gfx APIs is accepted, while the use of the in-built speech synth of Windows has not even been considered publicly in that manner, prior to this production. Of course, the scale of things being considered varies along with the things you can do with them, but is there really a difference?

That said, speaking less analytically, I experienced this as the definately best single demoscene production of the modern era, leaving many great productions weeping behind (not unlike many of the criticizers of this intro). I haven't yet seen this on a CRT, but I saw it where it really mattered the most. After a couple of days, I'm still absolutely thrilled. Naturally, I had high expectations but this one exceeded them by far. Zoom3 made all other productions at asm03 seem pale indeed, not excluding entries of the overall exceptionally good-quality democompo.

Wonder if AND can do yet better...?
rulez added on the 2003-08-11 23:01:46 by Castaway Castaway
plek: if you make a clean installation of win2k without adding the speechsynth (its under the helpers thingy) you wont get it...

"the people dissing it should also have an equally negative attitude towards equally external things like the sound/video drivers and the underlying operating system plus all the mechanics provided by it."

The drivers doesnt contain software that generates scenes or plays speechsynth.. Now take in account that theese dll's are not standard, most people have them since they are often installed with some other ms programs, but still.. this is not the way to go.. maybe in a couple of years when it has been standard in windows for a while and 2k is gone (about 98 i couldnt care less:).

added on the 2003-08-11 23:54:48 by Hatikvah Hatikvah
agree with stefan here for once (who'd have though it? :). using a 3d api and the graphics drivers is the most direct route to the 3d hardware on current machines. there's simply no way you could do it differently in a win32 application. so there's really no point arguing about THAT issue, because it is absolutely not related to the "using external content" problem :)

the closest thing is probably using windows standard fonts, which win 64ks have been doing for ages, and i admit the distinction gets very fishy here. bottom line is it's very hard to reasonably argue that point, but i still would feel better about the intro if it didn't use the ms speechsynth :)
added on the 2003-08-12 00:28:25 by ryg ryg
yes, stefan really has a point there. About fonts vs speech synth: I guess everyone can draw a set of characters, or even generating them shouldn't be a problem with the tools some of us already have at hand. And most default windows fonts have been default since win95...
But writing such a speech synth like the ms one is by far not as trivial, using it would probably be a quick way around a big problem, not to mention that it would probably get undeserved credit...
I think this was a good idea for once, and had the right impact where it had to. I'd hate to see it becoming a trend tho...
added on the 2003-08-12 02:40:38 by BoyC BoyC
i wonder what coder hasn't thought of using MS Speech API for an intro/demo :-)
I got mixed feelings about this one. Almost everything has been said, overuse of blurring effects, using external speech(at least AND shouldn't give himself credits for it). And am I the only one who thinks it sounds lame? We had a speech util for DOS 7-8 years ago and that sounded the same, no development ever since that.
Didn't like the music, but I guess that's my problem :)
What I DID like are the lighting and shadows, and big respect for the walking robot, that is awesome.

actually, I just rewatched it on my home machine and was rather disappointed... the sound doesn't have enough 'oomph' in it, there's waaaay to much blur, wireframe/zoom transitions are damn ugly and the speech is so helplessly synthetic it made me laugh instead of be amazed or something...
it's a typical partycrowd-burner intro... watch it on a huge screen and loud strereo and you're hooked, watch it at home and all the flaws suddenly come leaping at you from inside the monitor...

I was totally blown away seeing this at asm. I haven't seen it since, and maybe if I do I'll find some flaws and stuff to complain about... but it doesn't matter. Being impressed like that, looking around in the party hall, watching dropping jaws all around you... people screaming and applauding.. it's what demos are about... or at least should be.

About the speech debate... sure, I was disappointed... but still, I respect the guy for having the guts to do something he must have realized would be controversial.. as we can see here, there have been thoughts about it before and it took an intro using it to bring the discussion to the surface.

The blurring, transitions and lighting rocked.. if you don't agree, go watch fr-08 again instead... ;)

Negative points first:

- using the Windows Speech API and then crediting yourself is plain lame. Sorry. (or maybe I'm just jealous how much I could've done in FR intros if I was permitting myself to cheat).
- Also the rest of the soundtrack was in comparison extremely weak. Sound- as well as composition-wise this is where I imagine 4k intros in maybe a year, but definitely NOT 64k intros now.
- all that blurry zoomy layer stuff may have its visual appeal, but you totally overused it. The worst part is that it regularly brings a GF4 as well as a Radeon9000 to its knees; and combined with the fast movement all you see is a slide show of random trash pixels. Not too entertaining.

Other than that: Absolutely stunning. The models and the lighting look just uber. Congrats ;)

Whitout this entry the Assembly '03 64k intro competition would have been a great disappointment but I was waiting for another killer intro by AND after the last year winner. Watching and hearing this on the party stream was jaw dropping for sure, so I can only imagine what happened at the party place. I so much wanted to see this on my own computer and I was particularly stunned by the quality of the voice synth.

Imagine my disappointment when I learnt that the speech synth was actually the one built in windows. I was further let down seeing how much cpu/gpu power this needs. And even more seeing the blurriness hide half the intro.

Nevertheless, zoom3 does induce much adrenaline, the end result works just fine, the robot rocks and the overall quality of the 64k intro compo at asm03 was relatively low, so, it definately earns a thumb up. But I can't help feeling a bitter taste about it.

About the speech API, I hope most coders realise how lame it is to use it and how much more lame it will be to use it *again*. It's ok if AND dared to use it once, if we keep watching demos with it it's going to suck big time, even more than legos if you ask me :-)
rulez added on the 2003-08-13 16:02:10 by moT moT
I was quite impressed to hear he used the built-in speech synth. As far as i'm concerned, if it's included in an average setup of a recent version of the OS, use it. It is enabled in win2k default install (at least since service pack2 - i have a default setup next to me and checked). I'd say the 2 most recent versions of windows should be acceptable (we're aiming to make good-looking demos here, not legacy apps!)

There was similar controversy when people started to use 3d cards, and make demos that wouldn't run under dos, and even that needed extra fast-mem on amiga. It'll settle down soon enough, and we will have 64kb intros with speech and better effects cause extra space is available :)

How about a divx so I can actually watch it now ;)

theoretically this is all very cool.
but the low frame rate makes the visual quality suffer a lot.
and the permanent blurring, especially in combination with the blocky green wireframes, is simply ugly.
added on the 2003-08-13 17:46:34 by hfr hfr
The blur amount is framerate dependant, so less framerate means more blur. Try on a fast cpu with a radeon 9800 pro or similar.

Just AWESOME... technically (except the thing that it needs a really fast card)

Designwise: Haven't we seen enough of those garage/pipe/whatever scenes?

It's not too entertaining, but overall the technical side is what it makes absolutely memorable.

That robot ROCKS!!!!

This intro sucks.

Looks better than a lot of >64k demos, which shows how far 64k demos have come in such a short amount of time. The same can be said about AND's 4k entry, which also packed a lot into a really small space. In fact, I liked the music in the 4k demo better than this. As for the speech, even if it uses the Windows API, I think the execution is flawed, since it doesn't sound all that cool... I liked the voice implementation in Farbrausch's Candytron much better, and fit the style of the demo, too, which I think is more important than just doing something for the sake of doing it. Overall, though, this thing is really impressive, even when you have high expectations going in.

Amazing work. People says it lacks design and variation but hey, it's only 64k. I've seen demos far worse getting good placings and this intro is lightyears ahead of those.
Bad:
- The speech synth kinda ruins the feeling, it's disillusioning to hear the same speech I hear from that stupid wizard dude thingy... (and crediting yourself for it is sucky as well...)
- No credits to Aardbei for the texgen...
- The blurs are overused (can't see a thing), and the green pixelize filter is bad.
- It's just the same scene repeating over and over again.

Good:
- Funky synth.
- Cool models (the robot rules)
- The lighting and shadows rule hard.
- Very much content for a 64k

Well... let's say it's a thumbs up intro. But the 4k was better. :)
rulez added on the 2003-08-15 21:51:06 by Gargaj Gargaj
Outstanding. But the blur is too much. the reason i dont thumb it up is that, thru the whole thing i felt this should be a demo with a proper and more kicking soundtrack. Its not that the tune itself is bad, but the sound quality and lack of depth totally kills the whole experience for me.
added on the 2003-08-15 22:01:59 by NoahR NoahR

A very nice intro, even if it doesn't respect the goal of a demo. Making the maximum with the minimum. A Geforce4 TI 4600 or better is strongely recommended...for this, Farbrausch has my full respect. ;)

Thank you And for giving to me,
Your fantastic intro called Zoom 3.
With robots and colours and blurs galore,
I saw this once and it dropped my jaw.

But now I see what these comments teach,
Of ripped text-gens and Windows speech.
For this they accuse you of being a cheat,
But can they themselves match your feat?

It doesn’t matter to me what they say,
This is my favourite demo in just 64k.
Had you entered the demo comp instead,
I think you would still have come out ahead.

The robot rocks, the marching cubes effect rocks, the lighting rocks. (It also seems quite fluid on a GF3, contrary to what others have said, but I might just be less picky about the framerate. :-) )

The music, however, sucks, and so does taking credit for speech/texgen when it's not yours at all. :-) Besides, it's more or less the same over and over again.

I don't get it, why everyone is whining about the speech synth? At least for me, it wasn't the thing that amazed me the most. IMO the most impressive thing was the modelling...

Music sucks, some effects look too blurred and have too much colour but the rest is great.

Congratulations, Diman. Keep up the excellent work!

About Windows speech: I just don't get the point why using system-provided API for hardware rendering is fair while using Speech API is not? I wonder how many nowadays coders are able to code triangle rasterizer that would be as accurate as hardware one is.

(To those who argue that Speech API is not installed by default: at first, in most cases it is, at second, which operation system does include DirectX 9 in its default installation??)

Besides, using Speech API is not that trivial as one may think (requires different code paths for w2k and wxp). By the way, voice also differs under those systems (with XP one being noticeably better). So that, considering amount of work required to get it sound in a way And wanted (and put that in 64k intro), there was a reason for him to give himself credit for 'speech' (notice he hadn't written 'vocoder' or smth alike).

About ATG: well, AFAIK And has coded a texture generator of his own, with smaller size, leaving format compatible just for easier editing. Of course it's no excuse for not giving a credit to aardbei. But I believe he has simply somehow forgotten to give it - can't believe he did that intentionally. And never rips, it's just not in his style :-)

Using a 3D API is the only way of using 3d hardware in a usermode application. There's absolutely no chance to do it any differently. As said, the issue is (if any) more related to the question of whether using Windows' standard fonts is ok or not :)

I have yet to see this intro on my own computer, but with regards to using windows speech and fonts, I suppose it technically violates the 64k rule, but then so do external libraries, direct x drivers, not to forget the OS in general. Anything that requires Windows to run isn't fundamentally a 64k intro.

So what exactly are the rules of making a 64k intro?

I think And is just shouldering the criticism for being the first (but probably not the last)to use these particular features, just as many previous 64k intros were probably criticised for using external libraries and drivers at the time of their release.

The sad thing about this is that it kinda undermines the purpose of the 64k limitation, which has to be disheartening for some coders (especially those who have worked so long and hard making voice synths).
added on the 2003-08-19 18:12:09 by Wade Wade
"Anything that requires Windows to run isn't fundamentally a 64k intro."

So I'm assuming you're suggesting everyone who does a 64k intro writes his own limited OS and makes his intro bootable from floppy? What about DOS intros using BIOS interrupts? Etc?

i want a second version without all that blur filters. but this intro rulez anyway.
rulez added on the 2003-08-19 20:09:36 by diver diver
Sagacity: I’m just making a point that there’s no way to truly define a 64k intro. No matter how much you dissect them, they’re always going to use resources outside of the 64k executable (even if it is only Bios interrupts).

Conversely, if a 64k intro is to be defined only by the size of its executable, then the entire resources of the OS are at the coder’s disposal – which could even be extended to include any samples and images included during installation (unless it’s explicitly forbidden by the rules of the competition).

I wouldn’t even try to argue one way or another, I’m just pointing out some ambiguities in the 64k category. But in And’s defence, he didn’t break any rules, he just made the most of a loophole. :)
added on the 2003-08-19 21:31:20 by Wade Wade
Personally I couldn't care less how many pre-installed resources are (ab)used, since that's one of the fun parts of these types of intros. Oh well.

And the whole argument of 'proper' speech synths vs built-in ones is probably the same as hardware vs software rendering. Or something. Anyway.

On-topic: I agree with Diver's first sentence, except for his grammar.
added on the 2003-08-19 21:50:21 by sagacity sagacity
I think saying "must use no external data" is an easy way to disqualify things like system fonts and MIDI sounds. (But then there's the question of enforcement...)

But bear in mind, I thumbed this down because of the blur effect. It really frustrated my poor eyeballs...
the rules for 64k intros are:

if you are the first to use an OS resource in a major production, you get beaten up by all the other coders. that hurts. it questions your production. that's why people think twice before using something new.

the second one who does it will get slapped a bit. after that, it's free to use for everybody.

Now AND gets all the shame, and the pouet-popularty he gains from this discussion is hardly a compensation. The worst of his actions is ofcourse unclear crediting.

I don't like this development. I say reasonable measures should be applied, but black-and-white thinking is so much easier than reasonable measures. An example: I think using one font is OK, we did this back on amiga, but using all windows fonts feels like cheating. but if we allow one font, then we must allow all fonts? thats logical, but not reasonable.
added on the 2003-08-20 18:45:15 by chaos chaos
The built-in speech-sys sucks, doesn't even go near the level for e.g. the one in Planet Potion, so why argue? You ruin your own production by using it.

And besides this is not the only intro using it, check this 4k.

Got my hands on a laptop able to run it...

To anyone complaining of the blur: it seems to be framerate dependent, I watched it at 320x240 and it looks way better.

Some really great modelling / animation and also great lighting. But the textures looked sucky where i could see them. Some effects worked well, others sucked (the green wireframe + pixel zoom would have probably looked great if filtering / line antialiasing was enabled...) Effects were also used too often. But i guess that if they weren't people would just diss it for being a flyby :)

Tune was ok, not great, but good enough I think.

Overall, it was a great intro, perhaps slightly too flawed to be a classic.

Really, when I watched this for the first time I thought for a second that this may actually terminate any further attempts of producing a visually stunning Intro, since this proves once and for all that there are not really any limits... Obviously that is not true, but this kind of graphical realism has yet to be beaten in 64k.
Considering this, I am a bit surprised that this is relatively unpopular, especially compared to FR-08. For example, I do not understand what is supposed to bad about the music. The softsynth features some relatively complex non-sawtooth tone colors, and the tune is really a matter of taste. And, from what I know, 3D-models that resemble real-life objects are a lot harder to compress to a few lines of code than nice abstract forms.
When I heard "Microsoft Sam" introducing the intro, I thought "hey, that's a funny idea", instead of "how lame, now everyone is going to do it" or even "cheater", which is apparently not the case.
I think the walking animation of the robot is especially amazing. It sure must have been a lot of work to make it appear so smooth in 64k.
Designwise this could be better, the effects were so dense that each one filled about one frame on my "slow" Radeon 8500, but (or even because of that) it fulfills the main goal that even most top intros have - "look at how much we can pack in 64k" - very well.
Using Aardbei's texture generator... Well, I cannot judge that, but there were not that many textures in this intro, so I think it is not that big of a crime.

Basically, I do not see any weak points in this intro, but instead some outstandingly strong ones, so it definitely deserves a thumb up.

A bit static scenes but great for being a 64k. The speech was used a bit too much---nice in the beginning but got boring in the end. Good work anyhow.
rulez added on the 2005-05-17 23:44:10 by ManJIT ManJIT
Needs a good GFX card.
Didn't knew it was MS speech engine =P ! A bit of surprise now.
Does some prod with (intelligible) speech synthesis already exists?

Great work anyway! I guess how the "meta-worm" (?) part exactly works.

- mediocre (boring) wannabe trance music
- lame robot model (omg when will we get rid of these?)
- lame texts (TRANCE GENERATION OMFG!)

....but still, very good idea to use the speech generator (it's not lame, its innovative to use the components the platform delivers you) - *very* good engine, a lot of stuff packed into 64k, and besides i liked it a lot when i saw it the first time, too bad that the scripting is so pointless that it gets boring after seeing it for many times.

What's so unique about a blurry look? When overused, blur is ugly, and this one is no different. However, eventhough this intro it not really my thing, calling it a bad intro would not do it justice, so here comes the thumb...

Visual, effects and models are quite stunning for it’s size. Thumb up! But for my taste the camera movements are really too fast and together with all the blurring it was hard to really “enjoy” the scenes. Soundtrack?! …well… I just watched Micropolis and read kb’s comment … and this nice kind of irony made me smiling …

Lots of content in 64k, good synth, great modelling, and an awesome technical achievement overall. But also: too much Kasparov, too much blur, cheesy slogans; and while it was a good idea, the Windows speech synth is quite annoying. Left a bad aftertaste.
