some heavy 3d scenes here, but they're quite beautiful. and there's really a lot of stuff in it, the intro goes on and on and on. i like it

Boring to death. Some people fell asleep during Sonnet. That tells just about everything.

atmospheric.

Some good ideas but the result isn't. Too long and ugly textures. Sucking up the partypeople. (or i'm just jealous).
added on the 2001-08-05 by kurli
well, it's not fastpaced like most demos are at the moment, instead it's slow and beautiful. I enjoyed it very much ;)
added on the 2001-08-05 by ryg
These 3State folks are GODS. Even though some people don't like nature demo/intros.. this is just a wonderful piece of art.
added on the 2001-08-05 by rydi
Yet more wussy feminine euro-poetry. But the visuals and music make up for it. How couldn't I praise it?

added on the 2001-08-05 by fra
beautiful and well thought-out, long but not boring at all. I adore it.

though admittedly this is a production that's best experienced on monitor; on the big screen it didn't work quite so well - the colors looked brash and the morphing borders seemed silly (amazing how much better that looks on monitor!)
still it was very disappointing to see some people jeer at this while it was shown. the audience at asm01 was a bunch of total idiots.

anyway... if I had to think of something that bothers me here, it's the texts. are they necessary? most of the time "poetry" in demos feels like the authors don't quite rely on their visuals and try to masquerade them with text overlays. which is completely unnecessary here...

thats a great one. i hope it will soon be ahead of that more than strange antimoney in the charts :)

hm, seeing it for the 3rd time it gets pretty boring and you recognize that it's actually quite pointless. but oh well.

let's celebrate nature.
cool tune
added on the 2001-08-06 by neurox
i actually fell asleep during this intro.
added on the 2001-08-06 by rjv
Very good intro. Ok yeah, maybe a bit too long, but you have to see it anyway. 3state rulez.
added on the 2001-08-06 by alexkidd
Tried to watch it 3 times.. (including during the compo) and ehrm.. no.. once i fell asleep during the 5mins loading time.. and with the 1ghz at asm i could make it almost the first season.. but .. never more.
added on the 2001-08-06 by Hatikvah
you guys have a very short attention span.. go watch mtv.
added on the 2001-08-07 by _-_-__
oh yeah right.. you are just... SO SMART !

flad: Vic's tune is in fact not a chiptune... it contains about 2mb of samples :)
added on the 2001-08-07 by supersagacity
Still, this tune is a bit of a downpoint, as it just sounds too chippy. With the power of realtime synthesis, a much more fitting, atmospheric tune would have been possible...

But anyway, a really cool intro which i definitely enjoyed to watch, even if it's slow here and there.

This product makes you happy ;)

for some reason the intro crashes on my amd 1200mhz with a geforce2mx (newest drivers and windows2000).
added on the 2001-08-07 by macaw/loonies
sorry to say that the module totally ruined it for me (sorry vic)

never the less, very lovely landscapes and such..

btw, is it a 4chnl mod? :)
sure sounded like one in headphones

oh and kids, dont watch sonnet on a tnt2pci :P
sloooooooooooow
added on the 2001-08-08 by jelly
comment on kb's post:
chippy ? apart from the excessive sinewave abuse here and there i dont hear anything 'chippy' about it .. but then again i never saw the whole intro :)
added on the 2001-08-08 by jelly
j_ and macaw, a final version fixing most (all?) crash-problems and the hideous soundpanning-bugs should be out soonish. Size-optimizing, you gotta love it.
added on the 2001-08-08 by supersagacity
lovely visuals, really quite impressive that they packed so much in. maybe a bit dull in places, but when the autumn kicks in, it shows some real style.

but the music is below what it should be. maybe its not a chip, maybe it has 2mb of samples, but they apparently weren't very good samples. =) of course its hard to get a long tune in an intro, but still, something a bit higher quality was expected.

otherwise, marvelous.
added on the 2001-08-10 by smash
another great improvement for the final would be a higher resolution for most of the textures...
added on the 2001-08-10 by kaivalya_
one of the most boring ones at asm.
added on the 2001-08-10 by nosfe
BTW, this is the first ever NON-Finnish PC intro to win at Assembly. Odd, huh? Maybe that's why some ppl thought Tripfish 2 should've won. :)

Oh well.. if you have a short attention span or hate the outdoors, I guess you won't like this. Also, I wish the samples were better, Vic had some great ideas in his tune and it could've been better with the right samples.
added on the 2001-08-10 by phoenix
Marvellous...

watch it, FEEL it
added on the 2001-08-10 by ileaardbei
sagacity... hm? sizeoptimizing?

does that mean that we are not the only ones who think that final version should be smaller anymore? :)
added on the 2001-08-10 by ryg
ryg: it means that I had to hack to get it in 64k :)

I don't really care about the size of final versions, as long as they work.
added on the 2001-08-10 by supersagacity
A very nice intro, but at the same time it's quite long and with little "content" so to speak. Didn't like the music either. In the end I was pretty bored, which in my eyes, makes it an "OK" production.

BTW; was it supposed to go all flatshaded at the end?
added on the 2001-08-10 by fractalgp
i like the topic of sonnet, but the intro is way to looong. the music (four channels!?) is unbelieveably bad for a song done by vic. it ruins the whole atmosphere.
added on the 2001-08-11 by a-move
a-move: the music probably has incorrect panning, which should be fixed in the final. this is also the reason why it ends up sounding like a 4-channel mod.
added on the 2001-08-11 by supersagacity
It could have been something if it was shorter, faster (it's creepy on my p3 450 TNT2 machine) and with a more fitting and atmospheric tune.
added on the 2001-08-15 by dixan
3state loves to experiment with styles, and I like that. But I can't really say I like this one.

I pressed escape after a minute or so, and left it at that.

It's not *that* pretty, suffers from over-the-top design tidbits (the frame, for instance is fresh, but was annoying after a while) and so deliberately long...I liked the tune (as a chiptune) though.

Sonnet was a bold move from the previous 3state stuff, but a move that left me really wondering what they smoke (crack?) during their meetings =)
added on the 2001-08-15 by Shifter
something i don't understand shifter, how "a minute or so" is too long?
added on the 2001-08-15 by _-_-__
Play sonnet and you'll find out.

Seriously, I didn't use a stopwatch to see when I lost interest, but one or two scenes after the grid o' green spikes (grass, apparently) I pressed the upper left key on my keyboard.

Ah, did i mention that the progress bar was not in that minute or so?
added on the 2001-08-16 by Shifter
'I' don't need to play sonnet (doesn't run on my machine anyway) but i enjoyed watching it at asm. clearly it has character, it is slow paced, surely not the typical rgb color fast paced tunnels and weird metaballs transversed by wild cameras.. but it's coherent, and i found, enjoyable, as long as you adapt your own pace to the intro's pace, and you give it a chance. (of course it's like <a href="http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=313">the fulcrum</a>, a production that i'm not going to watch every week)
3state are not 'smoking crack' ...

w00ps :) and i meant, the fulcrum
added on the 2001-08-16 by _-_-__
I know they don't smoke crack, they're quite sweet-looking at demo parties. (Sarcasm doesn't pay off here, I guess)

And Fulcrum...ah, it's a brilliant demo. The start may not be fast paced, but that is not the point: In Fulcrum you were rewarded for the slow advancement with brilliant code, graphics and overall design. Sonnet simply doesn't have the 'pull' to justify the crawl of progression. (The scenes aren't very earth-shattering, and the (suspiciously visualice-like) typeface won't help that)

And before you start: No, that's not a lack of attention span, just a matter of taste.

added on the 2001-08-17 by Shifter
Shifter: Just go and watch the damn intro to the end before nailing it down.

For me Sonnet is clearly the best intro released this year so far. Rise by Mindforce & Park comes near but Sonnet goes much more further with the slowly evolving atmosphere.

I agree it's also a production you don't want to see too often (I actually saw it only once in the intro compo jury)...

And hey, I even like the music even tho' I'm normally not a big fan on Vic's. :)
added on the 2001-08-19 by melw
For the sake of argument, I did just that, Melwyn. Hasn't changed a damn thing, I still think it's not all that it's cracked up to be.

It was pleasant to hear the music finish though. It's still the best thing about the intro as far as I feel. =)
added on the 2001-08-20 by Shifter
nice intro, but after seeing it i had a sort of "it could have been good"-feeling.
added on the 2001-08-21 by macaw/loonies
Ugly and boring. (tho the music is somewhat nice towards the end)
added on the 2001-08-26 by uncle-x
Well, to begin with let me say this... I don´t quite get peoples trip with this algorithmic compression started by farb-rausch... It´s boring, it doesn´t contain any impressing "effects" whatsoever...it´s just regular conceptual coding with no motive of pushing peoples perception...if you get my point...It´s not bad or lousy it´s just boring and mainstream...
added on the 2001-08-28 by nudge
Adding insult to injury: some feedback from retired sceners who were forced to watch it, and somehow none were happy.

"Looks impressive for a software intro...-oh, it's hardware?"
"Is that green grid supposed to be grass, or am I that drunk?"
"Can I go back to coding now?"
"Noise textures. Did we have to wait that long for noise textures? fr-08 had proper texures and music for the tenth of the time"
"Sonnet, Sonnet... Isn't that the intro we prematurely esc'ed last week?"
added on the 2001-08-29 by Shifter
I bet those retired sceners were real impressed by the Alien Prophets demo, weren't they?
added on the 2001-09-02 by supersagacity
sagacity, was that supposed to some sort of an insult?!?
added on the 2001-09-02 by jar
No, just pointing out that having a bunch of retired sceners watching ANYTHING that isn't made by someone they don't personally know usually ends up with "it sucks".

I mean, just try watching a demo together with Assa :)

Oh well.
added on the 2001-09-02 by supersagacity
Wel sagacitiy, as a matter of fact, they were pleased 50-50 with it. They loved that marching cube crap.

I don't see what that would have to do with Sonnet though.

added on the 2001-09-02 by Shifter
A great intro which is very beautiful. This intro do indeed make my bodytemperature drop at the end.

added on the 2001-10-06 by trace
A really good intro! I want the final version!
added on the 2001-10-12 by dairos
No sir, I didn't like it. The *ideas* were good, but talk about boring! Watching a glass of water evaporate would be more fun.
added on the 2001-10-20 by thom
Has some very nice stuff and scenes, and I sort of like the music, but that's about it. Except for that, I mean, try watching this thing twice in a row and you will understand.
However, i still consider this a "must see" for it's radically different style. O well... i'll still give it a thumbs up.
added on the 2001-11-07 by Nezbie
i especially loved the music, but the rest is particularly long and boring to me ...

so i decently cannot give it a thumbs up, it's quite disappointing from 3state ... but still ok ...
added on the 2001-11-14 by flure
Perfect.Cool 3d scenes. It's a little bit boring (just a little) but the visual result is amazing. And all these in 64 kb. Great job guys!!
added on the 2001-11-15 by zafos
Just saw this for the first time on my brothers ridiculously powerful pc (and he only uses it to run office 2000... criminal) - oh my god. oh my good giddy gosh. this is really quite proper. it IS a shame it needs such high-end hardware - but, what a piece of art... i rate this way more than fr-08. sorry guys.

das produkt had better music, but this has the aesthetics down, and very intelligent direction, and transitions between scenes. fr08 is UGLY. i loved it anyway, but i love this more. simply breathtaking.

still, don't pay any attention to me, i think the best 64kb intro ever is Bakkslide by hellcore and omnicolor. ;¬p
added on the 2001-11-15 by MoebiusMindstate
Sonnet is impressive for its size. Of course it needs to pre-calculate its guts before starting... Also it lasts quite long. The work is very good though. Design is quite nice, only some colors could be better. If you absolutely hate 3d-fly-bys, stay away, and don't listen to it with headphones as I did because the stereo separation sucks! :-) Oh, and speaking of music, some vibratos/tremolos would make the music so much smoother...

Anyway, I liked it.
added on the 2001-11-15 by mot
there's a difference between slow-paced and boring. this is simply boring.
added on the 2001-11-17 by rjv
I like it.
The loading part is VERY long.
The first part's design simply sucks.
The rest is history... Atmosphere is the keyword...

added on the 2001-11-28 by zafos

added on the 2001-12-07 by digitalerr0r
Wow! This is the best intro released in the last year, it rocks!
Impressive how much threestate managed to get into a 64k-intro.
I think it should have been maybe 30% shorter, but what the heck, I wasn't bored.
added on the 2001-12-20 by CodeDuck

added on the 2002-03-01 by tomaes
time for a thumb. very nice colours in this demo imho :)
added on the 2002-05-02 by lai
It's always a poor reflection when the precalculating lasts longer than the intro. But even after the wait (2 cups of coffee, a shower and a short nap) there's nothing to justify this.

The visuals are average, the poetry is twee and hackneyed, and the shrill music is very unpleasant.
added on the 2002-05-04 by Wade^Hjb
Preload lasts way too long, and the beginning is rather crappy (did I wait that long just for watching THAT shit?). But then... the strange music is pretty addictive time, and the graphics fit the atmosphere.
I still do not know wether I like this prod or not...
added on the 2002-05-21 by TS

very nice rendering of the weather (sun, snow, sunset, etc.). especially the rain is amazing.
added on the 2002-07-22 by cyraxx
very beautiful indeed. perfect music. good cuts.

they should have dropped the lyrics though. and t could have been better technically... needs a fast 3d card for no apparent reason. and some of the textures badly fit together at the edges.

nothing out of ordinary but the vibe is unique - rarely you can spot such an innocent beauty in the age of sarcasm and cynism. and despite silly poetry usually ruining the thing, this one carries atmosphere within very well.. i wont complain :) great intro!

a very brave approach which turned out quite well if not alone for the lovely music. I remember that even back in 01 some images needed some imagination to complete but then again we didn't have today's packers and other tools. It's really a blast to se it working after all those years. The morphing frame is a nice little gem I've never really seen like this afterwards. Wish 3state would come back ;)
