sucksadded on the 2001-12-21 18:47:30 by Wade^Hjb Wade^Hjb
Wade, you obviously missed the point. In fact, the point is somewhere in Australia and you took a swing at the U.K.

If missing the point is an artform you're a modern Van Gogh.

rulezadded on the 2001-12-21 23:09:12 by lafey lafey
Sagacity, I see the point, I just think it would be better to have a variation of twenty different routines in 64k than just one repetetive effect in 256b.

Or maybe everyone would prefer to see 64k intros like Heaven 7 broken down into several 256b intros, without music or design?
added on the 2001-12-22 00:10:03 by Wade^Hjb Wade^Hjb
Wade, I absolutely don't get your point here.

Everyone should do what he wants, if baze is good at 256b coding, he should do that.

And prolly, that tunnel is far too slow to be used in a 64k or anything - but no one would DO so, because that tunnel is a 256 byte intro.

I don't see why a prod should be bad just because it could have been done better with less limits.

Ofcourse Kasparov could have been a lot more realistic and better with a several million dollar budget, everything built in reality, and the whole thing filmed, but that doesn't make Kasparov itself any worse or better than it is.
added on the 2001-12-22 00:59:43 by ryg ryg
Exactly. It's about 'what I can do in 256 bytes' not about 'what would it look like if I was Steven Spielberg and had no limits'. It's just fun for people who like to code. Actually, noone would even dare to split Heaven 7 into several intros as demos and 64k's use different techniques and they are generally written in C or something so authors don't write CODE anymore. I mean, demos and 64k's require lot of skill too but of a different kind. Well... I even saw many good demos that were badly coded :) So you can't compare two completely different worlds I think.

T i g h t .
Please don't misunderstand me, I respect limitations, but the purpose of the code here is to create a visual effect, and (from a my point of view) that effect doesn't make much VISUAL impact.

added on the 2001-12-25 16:36:43 by Wade^Hjb Wade^Hjb
Wade, I see your point. This is an old problem - form vs. content. Like... is perfectly pixelled picture showing naked lady fighting against alien better than stylish digital photo? No.. :) Please, take 256b's as fun and challenge. I wouldn't dare to say it's an artform. If I was about to code a demo, I would probably find better ways to express my ideas than coding exhibitionism, you know :)
added on the 2001-12-25 23:02:56 by baze baze
I always thought the demoscene was about good code, preferrably in tiny executables. Slagging off a 256-byte for being a 256-byte seems kinda stupid stupid to me. The impact is that this is _small_, not that it is a beautiful designed screen. This would have been cool even in psychedelic colors (luckily it ain't :).
Bad Wade, go sit in a corner.
added on the 2001-12-26 00:24:10 by lug00ber lug00ber
wade: code something compareable for this size.

the breathtaking isn't the size, it isn't the effect, it is both together. good looking effects in 64k are trivial ;P

wade, you whine a lot.
rulezadded on the 2001-12-27 05:09:22 by _ _

Ok guys don't eat him(wade), it's just his opinion (Even if very strange)

I know,. this demo should be voted as a 256byte intro compared to others, compared in it's category, but anyways I may have done the thing that wade does before. He watched it and didn't had any possitive feeling on him (E.g. I don't understand flatwireframedesign trend, I thump down cause they didn't had any impact on me.. regardless if they were good designstyle demos)

Sucubus is not my favorite. It's a bit too slow,. ok impressive, but too slow, and a bit ugly.. I like tube much better.. just my opinion, ok? ;)
added on the 2001-12-27 10:01:33 by Optimus Optimus
hey! i don't know what your claims are, but for me this intro is an example of one of the best usage of color palette And design besides the tight code. hardly hardly ever someone did so balanced 256b intro (not mentioning the quality). i think that even if anyone have managed to do an 256 intro using recoursive raytrayce engine on 'conventional' example, it shouldn't have beaten tube at the party it competed.
added on the 2001-12-27 13:45:03 by crs crs
Let us not fool ourselves. The 256b compo is a coder thing. Where coding skill comes first and design second. However this is nicely done, the colors are cute. Which is a nice plus. The effect could have lousy colors and it would still be top notch.

However, everyone is entitled to an opinion, nomatter how strange or even unfair it may be.

Bush-o: wrote: <i>"upi: typically Russian. 'We rule, they suck.' If you don't like fun don't bother and massage your ego elsewhere."</i>

In this situation I have to defend upi. If you looked at the intro subcubus, which upi stated to be better than tube, you would see that it was made by <b>the same coder. </b>So there's nothing about "we rule and they suck" in upi's statement.
added on the 2002-01-02 06:30:09 by Adok Adok
adok: Yes I used maybe too strong words there. I mean it's unfair to say "it sucks even in 256b cuz I know how it's done". Yes, there were many tunnels before even in 256b - still nobody managed to include multiple layers and decent design.

tube is not only a tiny effect with good code (though 256 bytes is much... I realized it when I tried to do a great 64b intro =)), but really nice. it's beautiful. not only "nice for a 256b intro". IMHO :)
256b is much enough for a not too simple code with well choiced colors and beauty! so I usually dislike 256b intros which are undesign. an intro should be nice as well, I think (though there are exceptions... something really difficult admirable thing in 256b just to show what one can do).
Tube rocks! =)

art is something created by one with the inspiration what gives inspiration for the others later. it doesn't have to be visual only or audial, it's the fact that this is scene and this is 256b to get impressed a lot!

ile, because I don't really care about 256b intros even after watching this one. I'm sure the optimization is fabulous, but that stuff alone isn't enough to hold my interest... simple as that, I guess.

well it rules ..

the reasons why is it so popular on the topten are probably because it works almost on every pc, is simple to remind, small to share, and it's so easy to write a comment here cause you can only say "great stuff in 256 bytes !!"

vote somewhere else aswell to make the charts change if charts mind you :)

So why did you thumb up 128b parallax starfield ? Certainly not because of its size optimization 'coz as it's been mentioned there, paralalax starfields have been done in far less than 128 bytes. ... welcome in the demoscene, sorry.

Poi? Still going on about my starfield? If I'd called it "128b parallax starfield that sets an appropriate greyscale palette, waits for vbl and also lets you exit" would you still be banging on about it being more than 20 bytes? Size optimzsation is easier the more you leave out, you know.

one of the first 256b I've seen years ago and still the most memorable :)

I'm not really huge fan of 256-byte intros, but this one is surely great.

when i read my comment that i posted nine years ago and thumbing this down i dont know what i was thinking :P nowadays i see more value in 256b intros than before. but i still think the color-palette is bad.
