Sorry for no better video yet (I expect a lot of you will need it), there is only this live capture from the showing in the seminar area: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xemD0lA4ZU - had it just been shown at the real big screen video would also be a lot better.
I Plan to code a framesaver for the framework at the airport tomorrow, now Kkapture can't do it ;)

For the win!

Shame you couldn't see it in the main compo showing. I voted based on the first five seconds, and after seeing the rest, I knew I was right ;-)

Nice particles, I could only run the DX10 fallback version on my rig, but it runs very smooth at least!

Decent quality 720p video and youtube.
Normal video codecs just aren't suited for this kind of "noisy" yet clean visuals, so even at high bitrates it looks so-so.

The making of: (very short version)

I planted this idea about an 4k with particles/fluids about a year ago - about the time we left BreakPoint.

By end of march 2011 Psycho had a very well working engine. He was doing some thinking and testing from about January till march before we had something useful.

Saturday before Gathering 2011, I did the music.

Monday: We experiment with various scenes - most not very interesting.

Tuesday: More experimenting with various scenes. I seriously start scripting the scenes and we finish the Heart scene and decide wich scenes to keep, and wich to kill. We are stille lacking scenes.

Wednesday: More experimenting and a lot more scripting. Basically I'm working on the scenes from 8 morning till 23 in the evening - al most non stop. Now we got some finished scenes but still missing some scenes using all the cool features of the "engine".

Thursday: Finally we get the first and last scene in place, and by the end of Thursday, I'm pretty much done scripting and have also adjusted and optimized the music.

Friday: Deadline is up. Fade in/out + blur and optimization. Final addjustment to the scenes and done.

Saturday everything went wrong at the compo, but that's another story :)

All work was done via MSN and Dropbox :)

Thanks to: MSVC, Renoise, Dropbox, Notepad, Messenger Live 2011, Carlsberg Black Gold.

rulez added on the 2011-04-27 21:32:29 by necronomic0 necronomic0
Have to say that our early fluids thoughts was grid based with more traditional raymarched rendering, and didn't really seemed feasible size wise (for something sufficiently interesting..) and we more or less dropped the idea, and was back to scratch in trying to find something NEW for 4k instead of just raymarching like everyone else...

Breakthrough was when Maytz sometimes in february proposed something less physical, but particle based like Agenda, and I read up on smash's blog piece, noticed the screen space spawning in particular, and got the main idea of using distance functions for spawning/shading/affecting.

I think Maytz is half a day off, but it went from a bunch of scenes to something resembling an intro during thursday, and when leaving EG for the awards on friday I had a complete intro that could use some minor tuning but was fully deliverable and below 4k (and without much chance of finding space to add more). That was a great feeling, and no need to code at the afterparty either :)

For a more technical engine description I wrote this post on beyond3d
added on the 2011-04-28 01:27:11 by Psycho Psycho
I just watched this intro again, because I had forgotten it already. I think it must be the terrible music - it sounds like a russian mourning march and does nothing to augment the visuals. It's so disconnected. If I wasn't so easy to impress the first time, I'd leave a piggy now. Still, nice code.
Was epic. Now i have to learn about compute shaders :)

neptun: strange.. Works fine on my W764/v270/GTX460 work machine - maybe you don't have the requested resolution.

I just updated the archive so the dx11 versions are less dirty (found some space) and the dx10 versions now have the full 1 mil. particles (kept one of the old 512k versions for slow machines) - it's actually faster than the dx11 version on my 6870.

i leave a pig here to decide later:

first impression is like:

i expected the agenda_circling_forth_4k @ revision and didnt see any there. now that i found it at gatherings releases i quickly generated some new new braincells and see why...
...it sucks due to the music suffering a lot ( exactly why i didnt try at all ) and demoskene-audience wouldnt have raised it that high!
i am sorry, due to the screen with some particles looking like slipping down the insides, waving, which looks gorgeous!
but: nah! this one releaed before ACF would have killed us all, but that way is too obvious and the technical way of doing it is like easened a lot with newest graphics-cards!

as said, imma leave it a pig and will see if i can find some bonus-points to finally thumb it down in the future! ;) ( UP ofcoz :p )
well, for the effort! its not THAT easy, else we´d have seen lots and lots of similar intros. ;)
