music and setting is very kitschy, i hate this. but the rendering technique, although buggy, simply rules.

very relaxed demo, in my opinion boring.
but the paint rendering is really nice!

Whoa , now what was that ??? Awesome Rendering technique, yeah. Finally something fresh, stylish and new.
Too bad it's somewhat short and the end is too abrupt..

But Still. NICE PROD!

Awesome NPR rendering and soundtrack! Sadly, that's all there is to it. Would have loved to see this as an effect within a prod, like Paper did with its cartoon rendering back then.

the technique is nice, yes.
doesn't make this a memorable demo though. this will probably be forgotten by most in a few months exactly because of that - technique is nice and well, but isn't enough for the demo to work on its own.

The rendering technique is indeed very well and original. Also, the music score fits right in. However, the bird movement could improve alot and it's rather short.

fantastic rendering technique! it makes this a good demo... but not a superb one... it's just too short and a little boring.

irvin: buy a playstaion. no confusing icons to klick.. just 4 symbols.
That is enough to keep in mind for you ...

'bout the demo:
renderer - verry nice... I.N.N.O.V.A.T.I.O.N
demo istself ... a bit boring

anyway thumbs up.
rulezadded on the 2002-08-05 05:10:34 by abductee abductee
As most other has pointed out, the renderer here is -very- nice. The renderer kinda makes the whole thing work. If you watched this by the ASMTV broadcast, be sure to grab it and see it local instead, its a whole new experience.
rulezadded on the 2002-08-05 05:23:14 by snillfisk snillfisk
thumb up for the excellent rendering idea ... pity that they didn't explore using it on more abstract scenes.

definitely worth a look.

Nice to see a NPR technique other than cartoon rendering. It does flicker a bit too much for my taste, but still thumbs up for something innovatie that looks nice atleast (not like all those other 'innovative' demos with random garbled crap graphcis that some individuals seem to like)
rulezadded on the 2002-08-05 09:26:22 by Sdw Sdw
something that completly killed it for me was the mechanical way that bird was moving its wings... and the way it didn't stop once it was on the tree

Very nice Non-Photorealistic Rendering in this one, haven't seen painting-like rendering in realtime before... It flickers a lot but In overall it gives a nice feeling, maybe the camera should have minimum movement in order for this technique to look better.

As a demo, it is very boring and uninteresting, however i give it a thumbs up for the rendering.
rulezadded on the 2002-08-05 11:02:35 by Nuclear Nuclear
i agree with plek/damage^tpb.
it looks cool, but the demo is boring. some flowers, some trees, that´s it.

Wohoo - that's what I call refreshing!
And I guess it's supposed to be relaxing and smooth, no action packed scenes expected here.

added on the 2002-08-05 21:45:52 by Hatikvah Hatikvah
Yeah ! a realtime painterly rendering, more beautifull than in my dreams !

I know, that frame to frame coherence is difficult to acheive with NPR rendering, the 'dots' slightly evolve over the time (in contrast with fr010 by scoopex+elitegroup i.e).

This demos is my prefered asm production !
The colors, feeling, animation and code is perfect.

thank to yodel !
rulezadded on the 2002-08-05 22:27:28 by Colas Colas
original and beautiful rendering is the good point, but modeling and scenes are very classic and music needs really more improvement...
but i like poetry, i just watched this demo after a cool drunk time :)

nice rendering style. But Demo is very simple :( 3d and that's all. I thing delicious was muchmuchmuch greater. But anyway this one is a nice prod!

I think you could still improve this renderer quite much.. but yes it is quite cute thing. but I cant thumb up only because of this cute renderer and somehow nice layoutting.

rocks big time. one of the very few demos that made me look very close to the screen and think "how the fuck?". amazing code.
rulezadded on the 2002-08-06 12:30:40 by shiva shiva
superior rendering technique, even tho it looks a bit garbled sometimes. the painted-feeling alone makes this demo worth seeing, it could be a real classic if there were more scenes and some more 'alive' music..
rulezadded on the 2002-08-06 21:45:39 by bhead bhead
It has been done before, but certainly not to this standard. I loved it, but it left me with a craving for more.

Perhaps its brevity and lack of variation was the only thing that kept it from winning.
rulezadded on the 2002-08-06 23:22:41 by Wade Wade
very nice and innovative.

too bad the demo is too short and a little empty (i can hear water, where is it? same for the cricket...:))

music fits well the scene though.

This production is entierly made at Asm (in 30h). We wanted to give you more content but there simply wasn't time.. maybe it's a waste of a good rendering engine.. but that just forces us to come up with something new for next year...

I've been waiting for demos like this ("impressionist" painting style) to show up for quite some time. Finally Yodel did this and it turned out quite nicely, especially considering that it's done in 30 hours.

I think the slow pace fits a painting-like demo, and it wasn't that long. The music on the other hand wasn't really up to par with the rest of the demo. I hope that yodel does something even better with this engine before the copycats get to work. =)

And about the flickering, I think that's something that's supposed to be there to some extent. If you paint every frame of an animation you can't excpect the brush strokes to match perfectly.
rulezadded on the 2002-09-07 13:03:51 by noid noid
nice work with this one, it looks amazing indeed. and the soundtrack is very moody too. the demo is a bit short in my opinion but i love it anyway.

rulezadded on the 2003-03-22 20:48:33 by texel texel
nice idea. I think the demo itself is a bit too slow and not really interesting. Very good music, although "acoustic" midi wavetables doesn't quite fall into my taste (i wouldn't expect you to hire an orchestra, so thumbs up for that too) :)

This demo goes in the same category as Rise! by Mindforce (only better). Awesome music (except for the Lords-of-the-Realm-2 midi sounds)
I've been looking for a classical-music demo, and this is much better than the Nextempire stuff. It's a lovely break from the Techno-Ambient stuff most prods have.
It calmed my nerves.
And the graphics are really cool. I want more!

This... demo... rules.

Again, I see lots of comments about the music being blah. It's fantastic! We're seeing more of a move away from a "WE RULEZ CODEZ!!" with a BANG BANG BANG BANG beat to more artistic demos. I've always thought that demos were an artform, both in code, graphics, music, and production - and this one is great in all respects.

It's short, indeed, but making a demo longer just for the sake of doing so is pointless.

I look forward to more Yodel releases.

Nice visual style.
The rendering seemed a bit buggy on my machine.. Some of the brushstrokes would jump around a lot.

It looks like a cartoon..... Music is good and fits to the plot. Thus there's my thumb up!

The rendering was very unique and just gorgeous. The music fit it very very well, but I must say as an orchestral piece it felt very amateur-ish...I loved though when the drums came in at the end (no matter how lo-fi they were)...all in all a fantastic prod from 2002 :)

One of the demos that still leaves me parted, I kinda love the effect but also think I don't need to see it again soon.

However, it's a fixed point in my demo playlist - and I cherish the mood it transports. After all it's something I'm not able to do, so it must use some magic - therefore thumb :3

The rendering technique (oscillating ellipsis, probably no bugs but rendering artifacts) is very innovative and deserves a thumb up alone.
Otherwise the demo is a bit too slow paced for me.
