Videos are fucking metal... or wait no...

category: general [glöplog]
I had a well-versed and vitriolic statement to go with this, but since Pouet kinda tripped during the posting *AGAIN*, here's the image that came with it:

BB Image
The uncompressed, pristine example of what were selling the demoscene with. Thanks, video requesters and youtube faggots!

...Now, since I had to explain to non-sceners that the one ~80Mb download was totallly a 64kb demo and the other ~96Mb one was so 4kb ...what the fuck are the videos supposed to prove again?

ps fell for the stereotypical pitfall. :) Who's the actual first one to come with a compelling argument?

Who's selling anything to anyone?
Except that one guy on eBay selling Amiga demos as Windows screensavers.

Close, but even Okkie can sleepwalk himself out of that joke right now.

OIC this is some sort of game where you have to guess the right answer.

my try: EP was right.
YouTube is selling convenience.

- Immediate : no bad surprises.
- Works anywhere : even on your home machine, which, since you are a graphician or a normal internet user, don't have the latest gfx card.
- It's windowed: which means if the spectacle is bad and uninteresting, you can at least hide it under your word file.
- A single place for just about everything : you don't have to buy into the movement, and you can compare.

(of course the no bad surprises part is only referring to "I don't know how to run this or that")

Bad encoding is awfully pre-eminent. I'm not proud of my deities encoding for example.

Remember folks to downscale to 320x240 *before* uploading.

So basically YouTube is the throwaway pop version of demos? :)

demos don't have Dane Cook, so we're not selling anything on youtube..

okkie: that can be solved :)

i suppose the dream scenario goes something like this:

random person: "did you see this really cool video on youtube? it's really cool and stylish (and not nerdy wannabe-art at all)! i think it's a music video, although i dont know the band"

you: "ah hah hah - that's no music video, it's in fact a demo. because i am leet, i've already seen it. it runs realtime on your computer. and, in fact, this one is only 64k. that's like the size of your cv in word document form. come over and see it live on my pc."

random person: "WOW! i had no idea such things were possible on a computer. and in such amazingly tight limitations. i'm, like, really impressed and stuff."

this scenario will never happen.

If we reach ONE, we win.

I'll take those odds. Cuz, ya know, the one we reach who sees the magic behind all the badly encoded stuff, who goes and says 'what the fuck?' and sees that it's not just a video, but a bunch of people doing shit cuz they WANT to - making stuff - well, ya know? That one?

I don't think we'll have to worry about that one, EVER.

This is called hope, and it rules.
Just go for googlevideo instead, it retains the original AVI

Gargaj: please don't! please!!! Rather a Robin Williams themed demos ;)

Smash: word! heck, so word it hurts my sides!!

At my work I sometimes watch demos during lunchtime, because I get really bored. My coworkers think I'm crazy and I stopped explaining what they are.

"Are you watching screensavers?"
"yeah dude, screensavers with sound!"

Ah well..

i stopped even thinking about explaining newer demoscene-related things to people ever since a certain smartass claimed that people like farbrausch cheat with their 64ks, because they're secretly unpacking gigabytes of data on your hd while you're watching the loader-bar!

The only thing I put on youtube are the stopmotion movies I make with my penis.

But they always get removed :(
