Suggestions & Tips for newbie...

category: general [glöplog]

Is there anything that a newbie like me should know about making demos and intros? I mean, is there anything in demos or intros that show is it like one?
"What difference there is between DEMO and INTRO?" <- that's a guestion where I want you to answer.

And second thought.. What should I know about these?

And the third.. What's the easiest way to start making demos and intros?

Thank you.

Historically an intro was what we know call "cracktros" -- small show-off demos preceeding cracked games and other pirated software.

At that point in time, these demos were nothing more than larger intros released independently of cracked software. Multi-part productions were often called "megademos", and smaller efforts were sometimes reffered to as "dentros".

Nowadays the term "intro" refers to productions with strict filesize limits, and "demos" are the increasingly larger brethren.
Shit, it second paragraph should read "At that point in time, demos..."

The erroneous "these" is, well, erroneous...

Ah, fuck it. Just google the info. It's out there, somewhere. Trust me.
I hate the word "GOOGLE", but ok, maybe I'll find somehting that I should know :P Thanks anyway, that told me a lot. :)

wasn't there also that definition, that anything <100k is an intro? not sure though.
anyway: once you got the difference between an intro and a demo, here's the homework to do:
1) "apply your new knowledge to the phrase '64k demo' "
2) "gargaj says: 'all intros are demos, but not all demos are intros'. explain this using set-theory"

demo > ribbons.
intro > ribbons.
kaneel: don't you mean:

intro = ribbons
demo = ribbons with mp3 music

Okay, cut the crap. This guy is here to learn.

Suggestion #1: Pouet is a retarded place filled with inside jokes and pointless trolling, so ignore the idiocy and make cool stuff :) Most of us are actually nice in real life.

which brings me to..

Suggestion #2: Visit a demoparty. I personally suggest Breakpoint during Easter in Germany. Everyone will be there, the beer will flow and you will have a good time and make new friends. Even I did that and I'm just about as unsocial person as you can be.

As far as the original question goes, the general rule is that demo = big in filesize and intro = small. Where the lines are drawn is a bit unclear, but nowadays it's almost always >64k = demo, 64k and less = intro.
