give the people in 3rd world countries a harddrive atleast. what's this sd card slot shit? if you're trying to get it into the hands of people who never used one before. you would assume they would need something that is always there instead of something they can just take out. imagine if they lost the card? would they even know how to get another one? harddrives are pretty cheap these days. throw a 20 gig in there. atleast they would have to take it apart to actually lose it. i thought it was for educational purposes. if you lose everything on it. then the only thing you learned is that it's basically useless to you.

hard drives are about to be replaced by flash and are a thing of the past pretty soon. There is no reason to include a hard disk in a lap top that does not required excessive storage.

they could just ship cellphones over there and give them free service. well, i hope the idea works. it's still a cool concept.

i think solid state storage is probably more sensible than delicate harddrives. considering the terrain of some of the place they probably plan to ship to.

Also, moving parts like harddisks are usually the first ones to break, especially when dealing with kids who may be very rough with the laptops.

I think this thing wil be a demo-platform in the future. Remember when you got your first Amiga/Atari/Commodore/Spectrum etc, and then discovvered the demo scene? That's how these kids will feel in 10 years or so.

theres shops all over the world, that sell older parts. 1 or 2 gb hard drives etc. theres cases of hard drives appearing abroad in poorer countries, being undeleted and the data of the previous owner being used for fraud. or the places in china etc being used as dumps by the west for old pc's etc.

have you ever tried recycling an old pc to a charity that deals with that to strip or send abroad to developing countries, they aren't happy with a certain spec. they want a pretty high spec machine. they wouldn't take a pentium 1 off me. which not being funny isn't the worst machine, back in hhm 2003 or something.

As for buying 2 in the west, you keep one and one goes to a good cause. well i would want to see actual proof it arrived, there are some proper shabby people sometimes who would even do scams regarding charities. unless i know the person/company behind it was genuine and not out for profit it would be good I guess. there are few companies/people in the UK that I have that total amount of trust in.

if you knew the limitations of the machine, it wouldn't be so impossible to code a demo etc on it without owning it, like some sceners do without the real machine and compile/test using emulators instead of the real machine.

anyone who was born in the 70's or before, we didn't even have 8-bit let alone 64 bit processors, and computers were out of the reach of normal people. yes they are great tools for learning etc. just i can't see many demos being done, perhaps as education on learn how to program the machine in C etc. beyond the standard type programming that is taught in school/college/universities. The focus was more on application programming/problem solving rather than graphics etc.

this is a new platform alright. It's not just new hardware, it's hardware + software. I'm not quite sure why you feel necessary to do this, really. That's disappointing to say the least.

Well, the completely unimpressive specs make it less appealing to steal these rather than a container full of Dells.

And for the obsessed: it has already been established that they will sell this dinky machine to the public at a boosted price -you essentially buy two, where one goes to an OLPC kid.

That does it. I'm gonna buy one, then give it to some programmer and pay them to create something on it just so I can film you kill and eat them, and then upload the video to you tube. It'll be the internet flavour of the week for sure!

It was in the most recent issue of Hugi, and reproduced, word for word right at the beginning of the thread.

I worked a lot with charities like that a few years back. Specifically the businesses that collect second-hand clothes. I say businesses because what they do with the clothes is sell them to the highest bidder, and the money from that goes to pay expenses, salaries and new investments.

So even though businesses like the Salvation Army do charity work, they're structured and run as businesses. Your P1 might make some African child blissfully happy, but whoever collects it has to process it and ship it all the way to Africa, where someone has to be willing to pay enough money for it to cover all of the expenses. And that's a lot easier with a P4 than a P1.

I didn't know that they shipped containers full of Dells to third world countries :-)
