What do you want a new Scene.org to be like?

category: general [glöplog]
As you probably are well aware already, Scene.org has not undergone any major changes since the latest version was released many years ago. The Scene.org staff wants to do something about this, had have already added several new people to the staff (with more to come), focusing on developing a new version of the Scene.org website.

When I say "website" I am also talking about "services", such as subsites like awards.scene.org (which is what has taken the most time up until now) and other things that sceners might be interested in. One particular area that needs fixing is the forum section, which (in my opinion) needs to be completely rewamped. One of the ideas we are talking about is to create a better entry point that we can refer people to when they want to know about the scene. As it stands now, there is a long written description (as well as links to other sites, some of which went offline years ago ) and we want to fix that.

So, I ask YOU -- what would you like Scene.org v2 to look like? Forget the actual design, that will of course also be rewamped, think more about what you want Scene.org to be as a site/experience. What needs to be there to keep you coming back? How does it separate itself from other sites such as BitFellas and Pouet?

Discussion -- GO! :)

ryg: Hehe - "To still be the giant archive it is today" and "Be online after Breakpoint!!11" are things that will be maintained of course. :)

I think there should be an easily accessible thread for people who search for co-workers for demo projects and/or groupmates. The threads regarding such matters here on pouet have without exception made me feel sorry for the poor sod who started them.

There should be a warez section. :)

Archmage: everytime I hear that idea, I keep thinking "that's great for those who need help, but would anyone actually go to look there for opportunities?" (That said I'd still give the project a try.)

And an advice forum for people seeking for advice. Perhaps one with people with moderating powers assigned to it so that they're guaranteed to get friendly replies instead of "suxxo0rz *thumbdown*" or the bit more constructive "omg, the music suxxorz and the colors suxx0rs and you suxx0rz get the fuck lost".

Maybe it should be some sort of portal... some sort of mix between pouët (god forgive me) and ojuice.
A nice wiki, like scene.nl/wiki, should be useful too.

And it needs to have a FAQ. A huge FAQ. Perhaps tutorials on programming (ie. how to get started with demo stuff now that you have made a for-loop) and some source code freely usable.

I could volunteer writing some. Also on topics other than lines, I promise ;)

- people directory à la Ojuice, with many search filters
- nicer-looking forum with accounts connected to the directory

A language system... like maybe with custom news, and lists of sceners around the country...

huge fucking portal! ability to have own internal group conferences, proper messageboards with moderation, gfx gallery with moderation that you can upload your graphics, same could go with tunes, and demos ? make it like cool community, and some cool news syndicated from bitfellas ... forums for gfx, code, music and n00bs.

Gargaj: not absolutely sure, but I think it is worth a shot. One of the reasons why I mention it is that I myself was in a position not long ago where I wanted to make c64 demos without knowing any c64 sceners. Such a thread could (not saying would) have helped me out then, because I sure as hell was not going to post such a request here on pouet.

people directory but in "good way" like like somebody is group founder and he approves members of group etc so just not everybody can be razor 1911 or acid member :D

i have some naive hope for a forum where various active people in the scene discuss coding, graphics and direction techniques, how they did things, research ideas and so on, for their own and everyone elses benefit. like gamedev.net, beyond3d, gpgpu, cgtalk and so on, but demo-oriented and relatively free of crap. with moderators to remove junk, and where you have to ask nicely to get posting rights (but anyone can read it). maybe a gamedev/flipcode-style image of the day for scene stuff.
whenever i see sceners sharing their knowledge on places like gamedev.net i think "why dont we have something like that".

Pay attention to Preacher. And take a look at the forums on CSDb. Mild moderation and a sense of user responsibility makes these a good read and a convenient place to post both newbie and advanced questions. Besides, there is also the http://codebase64.org/doku.php. Is it something like this you want for the pc-scene, Smash? Or more like a forum? Or both?

"You can search by entering a few letters from the file name, or by writing the whole file name. It isn't possible yet to search for releases by a group or an artist."

you cant open a forum called "tutorials" and expect a bunch to turn up. :)
its not really about tutorials anyway - it's more like having a place where people actually consider it worthwhile to talk about serious topics without them being infected by crap. there's places you go when you feel like having a laugh, and there's places you go when you're working on something and you want to discuss things. it'd be nice to have a scene version of the latter.

I liked the old ojuice system, it was nice to see all 60 members of Future Crew :-D

I would like scene.org to stay as primary a file-host for sceners. Having a single well-defined purpose is good IMO.

Perhaps it could even expand on it's functionality as such, by for example giving everyone with a login a public ftp-folder that can be used for storing works released outside of parties (that groups-folder thing is difficult to understand how works IMO, and a applying is a hassle I never bother whenever I just want to upload some production) or final versions of demos etc? This way we reduce the chance of people uploading a final-version to their university account, and then loose that account when finished with studies...

the FAQ idea is great, it could be somehow wikified, granted some decent moderators.

an other option for it would be the following: i quite like the concept of the "the bakery" portal of the completely not scene related and also very horrible "cakephp" php framework (http://bakery.cakephp.org). it has short articles and code snippets and what not, and these articles are quickly reviewed and approved when they don't completely suck.

scene.org could have something like this, but maybe with additionally a "question round" place where people can ask questions so people who can answer them have a better idea what to write these little articles about. that way the article library would grow into some fairly large FAQ-answers semi-wiki-style information repository. also it would require fairly little moderation. authors of a published article (which can get comments) can give other people write access to it so that they can help to further improve it. moderators only need to approve initial articles.

What kusma said is a good idea. Why not allowing anyone to have a little limited spare space on scene.org to host things. And allowing anyone to have a mail account would be awesome too. Well, when i say anyone i mean any "certified" scener, i'm pretty sure there is a way to check the fiability of one.

kusma: Instant access to new uploads is a good suggestion. I also dislike the current "groups"-layout, and also how you manouver your way across the archive.

The whole point is to elevate Scene.org beyond a simple file-archive btw. :)
