Translated quotes:
Quote:
"Even though Commodore 64 had a full keyboard and a floppy disk option, making it prime for professional/office use, it was the games and demos who where instrumental to the machines success."

"Tens of thousands of games were written for the C64, and probably even more demos."

"Many hobby-programmers were quickly intrigued with the powerful and yet relatively cheap hardware, and the art of demomaking would probably not be here today if it wasn't for the Commodore 64.

The 80s was the birth of many demo groups who competed amongst themselves in pushing the machine's resources to the limit. Game companies were also known for recruiting heavily from the talented programmers of the demoscene."

This might not mean much to you guys, but this paper (VG) is pretty much known for shitty reporting and "tabloid"-stuff. :)

First decent piece I've read in VG in years actually.

BiLDzeitung reports about demoscene. can´t imagine that, really..

Archmage: Turns out the VG "article" is just a really, really watered down version of a much better and lengthier piece by the same author in PCWorld.

Wherever it came from, it seems like a good piece. We get pretty much zero in the main press here about the scene.

Actually, it would be great to get a journo or two interested in the scene and doing the odd short piece on local teams when they win a big compo or whatever.

psonice: Go forth and make it happen. Change starts locally etc. :)

Gloom: I've considered it before actually. There are just two catches. I'm in the UK, which isn't the most active of places when it comes to demos (although we're improving :) so it's hard to find an ideal time to do it (ideally a big win at ASM or BP would be best I think).

The other catch is that it's really unlikely that I'll be winning any major compos at either of those parties, and really the winning groups should be involved in any 'publicity' (at least, it would be damn rude to do such a thing without telling them ;)

wasn't that cude flt coder from .co.uk?
psonice: Ah, but you're not thinking like a PR-person -- the punters don't know that ASM and BP are the biggest ones. If a UK scener wins _anything_ you can spin it like "Won an international programming and multimedia competition held in Germany/Australia/whatnot" -- the people don't know it's a small party with 80 visitors. ;)

cute, with t.
gloom: true actually. I'll keep an eye out for anything suitable. And get working on the demo i've finally started :)

Madenman: smash, yeah. That could have worked at ASM if they'd won. Perhaps at BP. The ukscene allstars demo a while back would have been perfect as they're all british, but it doesn't have the same appeal when they win in the uk (even if it was actually an international competition)

psonice:

At Dejavu 99 there were press interviewing people, 1066 was featured on a computer music magazine recently.. all courtesy of Syphus who contacted them about Sundown. Then theres the guy that turns up at Sundown every year and does his column for the local newspaper.. lol.

smash: hadn't even considered it back then :)

dvs: yeah, I know about some of that stuff (well except 1066 on the music mag.. which was that?) but I'm thinking more 'mainstream' press. I bet the bbc or somebody would do a feature on the scene, but you'd need something to get their interest, like a bit compo winner :)
