How the hell did they imagine that was in any way realistic? How are you supposed to press those keys? Is that a CRT monitor? I don't get the 80s.

If you have a needle and a microscope you could possibly use it. But I think they thought it just was a witty cover. There were calculator clocks that size, bigger buttons though :)

Doom - I bet you're one of those people who thought that the *worst* bits of the film Hackers were those metaphorical CGI sequences (which were clearly meant to allude to the romanticised synaesthetics of cyberpunk literature and to unapologetically make a dull film a little more interesting), rather than the endearingly dreadful script and compellingly horrible acting. "Zomg, that not how a real hack works!!1 Powerbook graphics in 1995 couldn't do that!!!!" etc.

I rather suspect that the magazine coverpiece was a figurative, exaggerated hypothesis meant to characterise the discourse therein as being fanciful and optimistic.

syphus: Oh yeah? And how could they read the disk label? Hu?

maybe its a normal sized 8" disk and its just being used by a huge giant.

syphus: You mean it had a plot? I hadn't noticed.

You're right though, I am one of those people who couldn't look past the hilarious technononsense and the utterly insane "cool hacker" stereotype to see that Hackers was horribly lacking in every other aspect as well (except for the presence of young Angelina Jolie, they got that part right).

But then I take it you're one of those people who take every message on Pouet at face value, too blinded by your need to put other people in their place to acknowledge the possibility that there might be a hint of irony behind some of those posts.

Anyway, HACK THE PLANET!

Fuck you all! Hackers was awesome! Zerocool is actually the reason I joined the demoscene and I wanted a skateboard like The Plague!

HACK THE GIBSON!

did you know that William Gibson wrote his cyberpunk milestone novel Neuromancer on a bygone typewriter ? :)

THAT is retrofuture!

Since you guys are not allowed to be younger than me, you must also have had that very issue in your hands at one point.

I'm sure Doom did, because he would have written an angry letter to the editor stating that the cover was in no way realistic, and besides, it was obviously photoshopped.

That being said:
It's essentially a mobile phone in that picture. People who can't see that - YOU HAVE A FUTURE AS A TELCO EXECUTIVE IN THE USA! APPLY TODAY.
Zest - by the time he was nearing the middle of his manuscript for Neuromancer, Gibson was using an Apple. He's said this recently to dispell the myth, potent though it is :)

Doom - it's sometimes hard to tell, and there are so many autistics around here that you might have become infected! <massive lulz> So did it occur to YOU that perhaps rather than being motivated in life by a desire to put pouet users in their place (which is something I practically never do, because there's always someone else who'll do it for me), I might just have been looking to further this nostalgic showcasing of entertainingly ill-conceived technocultural anachronisms from mass-media climates of yore by contriving the invocation of everybody's favourite fiasco of a 90's Angelina-vehicle? I saw that motherfucker in the cinema before they cut out all but a fraction of a second of her natural, unenhanced milkers from that dream sequence.

And finally, you tell me whether we should take eachother's conversation at face value. That'd probably end in tears! I salute you:
