dosbox

category: general [glöplog]

I have tried the dosbox project a bit. The result on my pIII-450 (w2k) is atleast not a complete fiasko. 'Crystal Dream 2' and 'Unreal' are running atleast acceptable and with sound. The curious thing is that I had to run CD2 with speaker sound because running it with soundblaster didn't worked (sound output is of coz still through your soundcard). 'Panic' is running without sound and partly very slow, the very old 'Atom' demo/intro by Sorcerers with speaker sound works ok. The intro 'Eclipse' gives me only noise instead of sound.

I have changed the default settings to 3000 CPU cycles, frameskip=4 and sound rate 20000. Turning off some not needed emulation may help a bit, running in fullscreen is faster than in a window. If you have a fast machine then you'll have probably much more fun with the emulation. Would be also nice to know how it works on other platforms.

I run dosemu(www.dosemu.org) under linux and it works quite nicely. Havn't tried much demos but I've tried some 4k's and they run fine. I've a pII-300Mhz.

Well, Linux' dosemu is utilizing some real dos while dosbox looks more like a pc emulation with dos functionality. Therefore you need a more powerful machine for a decent result. Actually I have watched 'Cardiac' by Infiny, a demo which I couldn't watch for many years (doesn't run here with MSDOS 7.1). With dosbox it was running quite ok even on my 'slow' machine. Just some flaws, but the project is in an early stage yet...

I wouldn't say it's in "an early stage". If you take a look at the status page, you'll notice that they have included a truckload of features already. Still many left or buggy, mind you.

And yep, it emulates the cpu. The advantage is that you can run dosbox on other platforms than x86, plus you have more control over the emulation process. At least in theory.

I think, the 0.60 release was atleast a big step forward. Alone that I can watch 'Cardiac' now was worth the download ;)
