Bare in mind it takes years of practice to get good. Also remember some of the best in the demoscene are involved in a related industry in their work lives. Catching up is hard: discouragingly so. So, its damned important to ignore all that and do what makes you happy: not what makes others happy. If not you will give up. One mistake newcomers make (I made it too) is to dump each new experiment on Pouet. Its not welcome and soon you'll find even your treasured creations aren't taken seriously. Find a safer place for such things (such as www.dbfinteractive.com) and leave Pouet for the really good stuff. So my advice, do what you like, what inspires you but do it well. The community here appreciates clean design as much as hard code, as long as it shows you did it well.

Hope that helps.

the community here also appreciates it if you show up at a party and buy them a beer or three.

Why do I always read begging demoscene instead of beginning?
