"Tip - gummisnoppis" song is PRETTY similiar to Mean Arenas main titletune from Digital Masters...

category: general [glöplog]
and Train of Thought is still the best DT album ever.

funny how a thread can glide from Tip to actual good music :D

I second MESHUGGAH :) (bought ObZen last week)

I gotta pick up some Meshuggah - you guys sparked my interest.
DAMN YOU! I was just getting back to composing stuff (no more summer, it seems), and now you made me focus on something else. DAMN YOU!
Well, hopefully Meshuggah will inspire me to do something else, music wise...
Chromag ! it was probably TP3, I didn't go to TP4. Oh boy, time flies...

-_-____-__-_-___ : Quite disappointed by "ObZen". They should have called it Catch 34... And I'm not even speaking of the ugly cover. But there are a couple of good songs yeah. "Nothing" and "Destroy Erase Improve" are my faves.

The cover is ugly right =) I just like the groove of quite a couple of tracks on there. Some of the more "noisy-guitar" ones I like less.

Uuuuh, just checked some Meshuggah.
Definately not for me - I mean, I like most metal - I love death metal, thrash, mosh, speed, heavy..... and Meshuggah are extremely technical and immensely talented guys. But they lose me in their complexity. I need something more...hm..more....down-to-earth. This is like "mwahaha-you're-all-losers-since-you-cannot-possibly-follow-our-music" elite-ish kind of metal, and it doesn't catch me at all, sorry to say....

I need at least some melody, some strings, harmonics - something that reminds me of traditional music, I guess. I thought Dream Theater was technical, but this one takes the prize!
Ah, when youtubing for Meshuggah, I stumbled upon good old Malevolent Creation:

Melody is for losers :)
You're right about the complexity of the music of Meshuggah though, and it definitely needs a bit of "training" :). First time I heard them (on stage, opening for MachineHead), I didn't quite grasp it... I was like, WTF ??? And the lead guitarist was on the bass because their bass player was injured. And he was doing his guitar solos on the bass. I mean... WTF ???
a year later my drummer told me again about this band saying how much he loved it. So I bought "Chaosphere"... and... I mean... WTF ??? But trusting my drummer's tastes, I gave it another chance and it started to grow on me. What I first took for a total absence of groove is actually extremly groovy when you start to understand the polyrhythmic approach they have.
Listen to the album "Nothing" (or even just the first song "Stenga"), it's probably the most "listenable" album, with massive grooves, each snare hit is a ten ton hammer blast on your spine. Swedish metal at its best... :)

I have re:nothing and I am really wondering if nothing (which I haven't heard) isn't better.

i thought obZen was GOOD, but not as amazing as Chaosphere or Nothing... then again, it has Bleed, which is prolly one of the best songs they did (right after "I", which is the best ;)

Knos: there isn't much difference between the two Nothing's, the re-issue sounds slightly more "modern" with less crackling on the guitars.

ahh now i get it - meshuggah is camouflaged jazz. that's why i think it's so horrible.

they do have the fusion thing going, sure, but at least they're a lot more digestible and accessible, even more melodic than jazz :P

gargaj, watch that video moby linked to and repeat the "accessible" bit. seriously, autechre is more mainstream than that. polyrhythmic my ass, if i have to do *effort* and repeat a song five times to "get" the beat, then it's just crap.

just like with jazz.

but yeah, taste differs.

btw where did daniel somma go?

Then we're at least three ;) - can't stand the solos where every musician in the band are playing solos... on the same time!? Seriously - WTF!?

please save your pity for people who need it - i'm perfectly fine enjoying my daily dose of disco music.
