Edge of Disgrace for all time Tops?

category: general [glöplog]
I guess i will have to watch this one again, because I'm not quite getting why this prod is considered by almost everyone to be "the best c64 demo ever!!11!"

it's a wonderful c64 demo, no doubt. but I have watched other technically excellnt c64 prods (by Oxyron, Bauknecht, sds/tom, etc) which were somehow much more entertaining. (just my opinion)

i think DoE is basically extreme c64 coder pr0n, and 'cause i don't understand the limits of the c64's VIC chip I'm probably not seeing it's true value. i can only say that as a demo (minus its supposed technical excellence) it is NOT the best c64 demo, imo.

I'll keep my personal opinion that it is NOT the most enjoyable c64 demo and doesnt produce the "WOW" factor to the average c64 demo watcher. but yes, I'm willing to listen to people whose work I respect on the c64 scene, if they tell me that this is technically more impressive than anything they have done in the past.

but I haven't spotted any comments on the technical aspects yet from those people :)

but then i haven't read all this thread either, so I better stfu and read it to see if it REALL is the most technically impressive c64 demo of all time!!!!

Although Edge of Disgrace is an excellent prod I was more impressed by the Desert Dream Remake

But since Desert Dream is the original crime, this makes it dangerous.

Its a damn awsome demo. It's a nice break from all the fancy "YouNeed1250EuroHardwareToRun" PC Demos out there.
"Newskool artsy fartsy PEZE ONLY people" will never get it anyway.

Mh. Most of my favorite demos are for oldschool platforms (VIC, C64, few Amiga ones) yet I manage to find this awfully boring and not worth 15 full minutes.

Was it 3 minutes and only had the best parts with actually good music, it coulda been something. :)

..To dodge all trollings: I meant VIC-20, not the video chip solely.

it should be in the top 10 as far as i'm concerned. i still don't know if this is my favourite demo ever. it's excellent in every way but there have been so many other great demos, and also ones that have been done earlier etc etc. but top 10, i'm all for it! come on guys, more thumbs!

That's not how it works :) Top 10 is based on page-views, so somebody should post it on Slashdot or something where nobody gets it :)

It will sooner or later reach the top places regarding the hype and the awesomeness, don't worry about that :)

Imagine the day when c64 become so antique that it actually costs more than your typical PC demo platform. The space-time continuum will tear and we will all be cast in the flames of hell.

you already need a 50 euro network adapter for your c64 to get some demos on it anyway

Actually... the swapping scene still exists on c64 :)

@Gargaj: ?

A 1 euro X1541-cable works fine too.

And what Sander said, you can always mail-swap.

Or you could just have come to X and got a free floppy with the Oxyron demo :)

scout: so it works under winXP now? last time i heard it didnt. (though that was a while ago.)

well, starcommander still seems to be a pain under XP/Vista.

A lot of ppl are using opencbm/gui4cbm4win at the moment: http://sourceforge.net/projects/opencbm

Even works with Linux.
