Will rgba's elevated reach the all-time top?

category: general [glöplog]
i wonder why the all-time tops are reached so "easily" nowadays. they seemed to be far more "static" in the past.
Elevated has gotten some media attention.

Yep they did.. like this one:

DON’T SETTLE FOR MEDIOCRITY OR: HOW THEY CRAMMED 3½ MINUTES OF VIDEO INTO A 4KB FILE:

Random blog != media coverage

well there is also, for example http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/04/15/the-hard-maths-elevated/

(rps != random blog)

Random blog huh? Well... I guess so. :-) (but I've been a part of the scene since the early 90's, so not so random really)

I wish pouet had something like vimeo, were you could see which sites are linking to each prod profile.

No it will not. Because if they ever get near we will call in okkies 4chan friends.

Technically I think it could/should, at least considering the current shader era.
The same goes for the other killer 1ks-4ks (like tracie, untraceable and sult, IMO.)

Exactly.. Elevated can only go so high in popularity so fast because it gets a LOT of hits "from the outside". Found a lot of smaller blogs about it, but where are the really big ones? (apart from rps). Could indeed be interesting to see the referrers.
It's obvious that it has a lot of mainstream appeal, in the same way as fr-08 or debris. While productions like untraceable (or sult for that matter) are too "scenish" and will have very small appeal outside and thus never get the amount of hits.
(even though I consider untraceable much more impressive after looking more into how elevated is/could be done).

A friend of mine claims he saw it on wired... That'd explain a lot ;) (couldn't find the link tho)

I think it will, but I'm a bit put off why Sult hasn't gotten near as much attention, which imo is much more impressive...I suppose that could just fit in with the outside attention thing

It's a bunch of plasma fractal height maps. Get over it.

That's what I'm saying, but not to that extent :P It IS good...

My anti-virus found a trojan in each file?

This is always funny though. Can't exe packer coders get in touch with the antivirus companies and provide them with unpacking routines so we won't have to confuse everyone with false alarms?

doom: iirc ryg tried once but got no response?

Just to clarify - everything in elevated is VERY nicely done (maybe except the camera paths following ground level), it just seems quite feasible - unlike untraceable ;)

Psycho; Yes. We already know that elevateds camera paths are teh sucky (even for 2001) and that untraceable is nice. We also know that elevated is a really bad rip off of Mojo Dreams (that was dissed even then for being a total rip off..). Also the music sucks and the group has always had the wannabe label. Yes yes yes. We know! No need to brag about yourself here. We KNOW you shouldve won, but you cant convince bp organizers to show your entry the last just because the technical- and art- skilled people like ourselves knows shit. Let them be. Theyre only germans, they are used to make mistakes!

this is getting pretty hilarious - but what was to be expected...

I mean: All top-3 intros were awesome, groundbreaking, fantastic - call it whatever you like. Even the intros ranked below were really good. They had to be shown somewhere in the compo. If they had been played first no-one would remember any of the other intros.

Whining afterwards is such an easy thing to do, why not be happy that it was a really awesome compo!? I think that Elevated is getting this large amount of attention is because the visuals are easy to relate to ie: they look like "real" world stuff.

If you think some of us had the intention of having some kind of world-domination (outside the scene) plans with this 4k, you should probably think again.

The 4k compo at BP'09 was the damn best 4k compo I've seen so far. I really enjoyed more than half of the entries and couldn't believe what I've seen in most of them. All of you gave me a lot of fun with your intros and made me excited. If I look back I have to say that a couple of years ago I didn't like 4k intros at all, as most of them didn't contain music and a prod without music never works for me. Now you show me visuals and music which make me horny. Thanks!

Unfortunately the awstats for Pouet is/has been missing since Oct/2008, so I can't check any of the referrers easily. Gargaj - something got broken with the server change?

BTW. The following quote on RPS made me smile :)

Also the music and light show suggests they are from Northern Europe. No-on else could be so straight-facedly cheesy, surely?

hatikvah: oh, i got responses plenty of times, and got whitelisted, and then got blacklisted again 2 weeks later by someone else in the same company. at some point i just gave up.

besides, i don't have a routine that can turn a kkrunchy-packed exe into a normal executable file again - it's actually a pretty hard problem. kkrunchy can unpack the packed data to a valid memory image that executes properly if i jump to the entry point, but there's no information about where sections used to be, the import tables are pretty thoroughly destroyed, etc.
